Shinobi no Ie: House of Ninjas (2024)
Fantastic show
Can't believe how many people have written about the music - its spot on! Folk songs from America spanning 50 years compliment the hesitant and torn Japanese family which is so brilliantly acted by each actor. Great story, great pacing, great action, great music. Totally surprised how much I liked this - brilliantly written and directed with just enough kitch and humor to compliment the stereotypical Japanese tropes - utterly well-balanced fun. A mix of Archer and Kung-fu hussle thrown into a normally-paced family drama/ninja movie. This time the ingredients when blended together made a great show.
City of Spies (2022)
Somewhere between a failed spy story and a failed Pink Panther movie
This was..... hilarious? Sad?
The most non-sensical storyline, poorly cast, poorly acted movie ever. The female lead is quite good, but everyone else in the movie seems as if they are channeling the spirit of the cast of Archer, minus the humor. This movie feels like a film school senior project, without any thought as to the actual behaviors, training, or normal human interactions between two people. The only thing that closely resembles the acting and storyline of this film....is an adult movie! That's what this felt like - watching a low-budget porno, but missing the sex scenes. At times it was as if even the director couldn't decide if he was making a serious movie or a farce in the vein of The Pink Panther movies...the music in a few scenes seems to signal impending levity, but the acting doesn't reflect the mood change. Just a complete mess of a movie.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Waaaaaaaaaaaay over-rated
Yes, the setting is stunning. Yes, the actors are marvelous, right down to the smallest parts and casting choices. But that does not make a good movie.
The Producers deserve an award for putting all the elements in place....except a script worthy of 2 hours of your time!
This is beyond dreadful, the most disappointing movie I've seen in years. There are a thousand movies that provide a more enjoyable treatise on friendship, isolation and family. This was such a surprise seeing his previous movie '3 billboards....' Was so brilliant. Do not waste your time on this, unless you are committed to watching only the most depressing scripts ever put to film.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Starts great...turns into a nothing burger
A two-hour doc would have been good.....starts strong.....by the fourth hour of this, it is in negative star territory. Watch something else.
