El Reino (2021)
It's not a REAL ten, see below:
The concept and the idea are good but the final execution is really, really bad: The script and the characters are straight out of a mexican cheap telenovela or a cheesy soap opera, production-wise is okay and the build up of the scenes are somewhat consistent until it fells flat on it face. Like having a "edgy party with drugs and guns" full of... rich and well groomed kids? A russian roulette where there's a dude behind the player not worried about the bullet getting to through this dude and hitting him? Yeah, that's not convincing at all.
Some good acting (Furriel and Dupláa) but most of them are bad. Except for Chino Darín's one, because he isn't even acting. He moves around the sets, putting weird faces and trying to sound convincing.
How to spoil a good story and a good concept, a masterclass.
Why 10 stars, though? Oh yes, that's only to annoy conservatives.
Chaos Walking (2021)
Eh
1% Rimworld and 99% boring, stupid and generic sci fi movie. Be wary, expect 5 sequels of this in the future.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
It's hard to watch, yes, but that doesn't mean it's trash. It's a deep dive into the dark sides of life:
It's confusing, it's all over the place, it's pessimistic, it's slow and tedious and that's the beauty in it.
Life is tough (specially for the elderly, the poor, the outsiders and the ill), full of complications, problems and obstacles. That's the reality we can't escape (or at least we try for brief moments) and that's why when a movie like this shows exactly all those things combined and compacted in 2 hours, it results in a pill very hard to swallow.
It's okay if you are going through all of those things and cannot stand it in a movie because you wan't something else to put you mind into. But if you want to stare into the dark eyes of solitude, anger, sandness, apathy, confusion and other not so joyful feelings... then you'll enjoy it.
K-PAX (2001)
Better watch the original one.
Yes, it might strike as a surpirse since it's not even aknowledged by anyone involved in this production, but it's an unofficial remake of 1986 "Man facing southeast" from Argentina. To settle the legal dispute, Universal promised the director of the original movie to share royalties with him, but as you may know, this movie didin't make too much so they basically ripped him off.
Remember, "Man Facing Southeast".
Zama (2017)
Pay no mind to the unfounded criticism about this film. Watch it.
I decided to watch this movie after reading very mixed reviews. When a film is bashed and praised so extremely at the same time, it cannot help but call one's attention. And I don't regret that decission.
The only way that I explain myself why a such good movie can have so much (bad) criticism will be redacted at the end of this review. First, I'll go with why I enjoyed it so much:
In first instance, novelty assured. There's not many argentinian films surrounding stories settled in latin america's colonial era, and certainly not many films with a poetic narrative for this kind of stories.
If you find films of Eliseo Subiela, Andréi Tarkovsky or Ingmar Bergman to your pleasantness, you will surely love Zama.
The locations are gorgeus, the scenography is extremely well made and the performance from the actors are excellent. Even extras are spot on, except just for few ones, wich at some point aren't exactly standing idle in the background.
Now, why so many people displeased by this film? It's in the eye of the beholder, but a sensible reason is that not many people are accustomed with this kind of narrative, driving them to the boredomness. Wich is perfectly understeneable because everyone has different preferences.
But, there's other kind of critics: The ones that are unfounded.
Most of them comes from argentinian viewers and are new to this kind of movies, even for argentinian movies (that tend to have harsher reviews from their own country's spectators). The explanation for this is very simple: Lucrecia Martel expressed her political point of view about Argentina's goverment lately, followed by a massive backlash from, let's say, the more conservative sectors of the country.
So, don't fear the reaper. Or the internet trolls in this case.
This movie is worth watching.
