Mean Girls (2024)

Fine but not unique, little that's new compared to the original
17 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I definitely got positive utility from watching, but it wasn't unique and the musical parts and dialogue were very cringy. Much of the dialogue was the exact same as the original movie, without any changes. I don't understand what the point of this new version was. The actresses and actors seemed great, but the writers didn't really do a good job. The lines that weren't direct copies from the original were made worse. The original made a new intervention in the movie scene, but this one just seemed like they were trying to make more money out of the same idea without adding anything new, apart from the theater-type musical scenes.

Tales of the Unexpected (1979–1988)

Fascinating, creative twists, they don't make anything like it anymore

They don't make shows like this anymore. A real twist every time, and it's nothing you would expect. Many movies today are too afraid or too lazy to give unexpected twists. Dahl was genuinely a great storyteller with immense creative skill. Every episode has you feel invested in the characters, and yet not everything is spelled out -- rather it's something for the viewer to guess at until the ending is revealed. There are no "good" endings as traditionally portrayed in much media, but complicated ones with fascinating ideas at play. My favorite episode was William and Mary because of how horrifying the concept is -- and it doesn't require CGI or gore to convey this horror.

Uninspiring, unchallenging. I feel my braincells disappearing watching it.

As the title says. The story is meaningless, it does nothing but reinforce cliché narratives and the status quo. There is nothing special about this movie. The actors are fine, whatever. But the fights are completely expected, the storyline is completely expected, and at best it's just a show of what Marvel's intellectual property includes and how many actors they are able to woo with their massive budgets. It's the same boring back-and-forth with mindless, predictable, and corny one-liners. It's the same narrative of how great the vanguard of society is, unaccountable to anyone, completely lacking in permanent societal disruptiveness. And it's the same useless profit-seeking plotline centered around the same settings, characters, and expectations as usual.

Pulp Fiction (1994)
10/10
Unique and thoroughly enjoyable

I have never seen a better movie, and I'm serious on that. It's different tales coming together in a way you'd never think, the progression is nothing you'd expect; every time I thought fate was going to happen, the characters averted it, for better or for worse. None of that lazy, mindless, and corny garbage that we see in so many more recent movies (read, Marvel). It's unique, it's thoroughly entertaining, and it's a cultural classic and a masterpiece. The characters are not good people, they're not all bad people either. They're just the characters. I normally am into movies with good social commentary or challenging messaging, but for some reason I was more than satisfied with this one, despite it having no real social commentary, anti-capitalist and anti-state messaging (which is still very necessary). The fact this was made in the 90s and we have yet to see a better movie since, is both a shame to the movie industry, and a testament to how great Tarantino was.
