A Man Called Otto (2022)
Better than expected
I went into this expecting it to be a feel-good, so-so, predictable movie. It was somewhat predictable, but it still surprised me. The reveal of Otto's life through flashbacks was very touching. The humor was spot on, it never felt forced. Definitely a bit of dark humor, but I liked it. Tom Hanks was brilliant as always. It's amazing how he keeps finding new characters to play, no two are the same. He played the grumpy, yet lovable old man next door very well. How he begrudgingly kept helping everyone was really enjoyable. To those criticizing this movie. People expect too much from movies nowadays. I know it's Tom Hanks, but I didn't expect this to be an Oscar contender and it's not. It's entertaining. It's funny. It evokes emotion. It's heartfelt and it tells an entire story very well. It's a movie that knows what it is and doesn't take itself too seriously. Just stream it and try not to smile at Tom Hanks being a grumpy old man with a good heart. I bet you can't do it.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019)
Touching
Don't listen to all the negative reviews. I assume you want to watch this because you are familiar with Mr Rogers. If you watched his show as a kid then you'll like this movie. I was very young when I watched his show so I couldn't tell you much about it. This movie brought back so many memories. It is so touching. It wasn't bored the entire time. I saw it in the theater and didn't even want to leave to get snacks or go to the bathroom. It made me laugh, it made me cry. It makes me realize what a great guy he truly was. Of course Tom Hanks played him perfectly. He WAS Mr Rogers. Thank you to who made this movie and thank you to Mr Rogers.
Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields (2022)
Very drawn out
After three episodes each nearly an hour long they finally get to a conviction and just roll it as text at the end of the series. It was about victims and a suspect we hadn't heard about since previous episodes. I was waiting for 3 hours for closure and I barely got it. Anyways, they do a good job of showing the perspective of some of the family members, but it's mainly the same few people talking about the same few victims for three hours. There were dozens of bodies found and they only focused on a few. Overall it would have been much better if it was half the length and they did a better job with the ending.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022)
Holiday Fun
I went into this not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. It starts with the usual crew. There's some fun antics and a look into the daily life of the guardians. One of my new favorite Christmas songs is played by an impromptu band. Then it turns into a Drax and Mantis adventure. They've mainly been secondary comic relief characters so I liked seeing them get some screen time. It was enjoyable to see them work together, being completely oblivious to how the world works. Mantis has a decent fight scene, definitely the longest to date. If you enjoy the Guardians of the Galaxy movies then you'll definitely enjoy this. Even if you haven't seen those movies I could see this still being enjoyable, it's pretty lighthearted.
Mother Teresa: No Greater Love (2022)
Touching
I went into this not knowing much about Mother Teresa. I didn't even know she'd been canonized (officially declared a Saint). She dedicated her entire life to the poor and sick. That's all she did her entire life was give her time to them. She'd go from place to place wherever she was needed most. She personally went into dangerous situations to get people out so they could get help. This documentary consisted of interviews from people that knew her. They talked about the kind of person she was and told lots of stories. That added films and pictures of her and it is so well done. This is truly one of the most touching and inspiring films I've ever seen and I'm not even religious. We all could learn so much from her. She didn't judge anyone, she just wanted to help.
Edge of the Earth: Reaching for the Sky (2022)
Cool climb, but lots of drama
There was a lot of drama in this episode. Obviously that's what they like to focus on in this series, but they didn't climb until the last 20 minutes of the episode. It was just negative until the very end. They focused mainly on the struggle to get to the climb rather than on the climb itself. On a positive side the scenery was beautiful and it was wonderfully shot. I just wish there would have been more of the climb considering that's what the whole episode was about. That being said it's still worth a watch. I'd just skip the first half of the episode. Lol
This is so I can get 600 words. What's up with that anyways?
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Kept me guessing
I don't understand the bad reviews. I feel like people expect too much from movies nowadays. If you like physiological thrillers then watch this one. The acting was great and the pacing was just right. The entire movie has very few characters and takes place in one house, so don't expect it to be a fast paced action movie or anything. I watch a lot of movies, so I usually have a good idea where the story is going, but this one threw me off. It kept me guessing the whole time. This is one of the better Netflix movies I've watched in a while. Don't listen to the bad reviews, cue up Netflix and put this movie on for your evening's enjoyment.
The Batman (2022)
Detective Batman!!!
This is a fresh take on Batman, which I think we all needed after the recent editions. This is very much a detective noir film. We finally get to see detective Batman on the big screen. There isn't a whole lot of action, but when it is there it's very well done. I was fully invested in the story. The characters are great, all these actors did such an amazing job bringing them to life. The score of the film fits perfectly with the scenes. Don't listen to anyone that says it's "too long" or "too boring". They added later upon later and developed this story well. It did not feel like 3 hours to me. Just go see it for yourself.
Hector and the Search for Happiness (2014)
Very enjoyable movie
As I said, this is a very enjoyable movie. I can watch it when I'm happy, watch it when I'm sad. It's so fun following along with Hector on his adventures seeking happiness. It's fun to watch him grow. He's a relatable character. I've definitely fallen into the rut of day to day life and wanted to break out and go on an adventure. This is a feel good movie that is easy to follow along with yet it still puts you through a range of emotions and keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. You get to see people and places from all over the world and how life and everyone's view of happiness is in each place. It's worth a watch.
Midsommar (2019)
Not for me
I gave this a 5 because the cinematography is great and Florence did some amazing acting in this.
Overall it is just disturbing. The whole movie made me uncomfortable.
Dune (2021)
Amazing!
The only reason I could come up with that this movie shouldn't get a 10/10 is that I want to see more of the story. They let you know it's only part one right away so that's not anything I'd hold against them.
This movie is visually stunning. The acting is fantastic. They do a great job building the world. They give you just enough info to understand it, but not enough to confuse you. Those that say this movie is boring maybe thought this was going to be nonstop action or something. It's not that kind of sci-fi. There's plenty of suspense and action in this movie as well though. It's 2 and a half hours long, but it didn't feel like it at all.
I actually watched this first on tv and then went to the theater to see it again. It is absolutely amazing in theater. I highly recommend you see it that way if at all possible. This is a masterpiece. I can hardly wait for part two.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Lackluster
I'll start by saying I hate how overly critical people are of movies nowadays. Everyone either gives a movie 10 stars or 1 star. This one does deserve the negative reviews though. I was being generous giving it 4 stars. I'm a big movie fan and superhero movie fan. I loved the first Wonder Woman. Gal did such an amazing job bringing the character to life.
Some cons for this one:
-She learned to fly, turned a jet invisible, and had a flying suit all in the same movie. Why?
-Why did they do away with the sword and shield and trade it in for a do everything whip?
-the plot was so predicable
-I like Chris Pine as Steve, but we already got a movie with him, the first one. It was an unnecessary move. Gal can carry the movie herself without him. Albeit with a different script than this.
-It also does not lend to her true character that she was hung up on Steve for like 50 years! I get she would still love him and miss him, but that part was laid on way too thick.
-I also can't forget how Steve was brought back in some random dude's body. That's just creepy and wrong. The wish could have definitely brought him back for real so why did they write it like that?
-Both the villains were not well developed and cheesy as can be.
-Why did they have that opening scene with her as a child where the lesson had nothing to do with the rest of the movie!?
-This movie did not follow cannon with the previous movies or the ones after.
-The CG could have been much better, especially with Cheetah at the end.
-It also stands out that ALL of the men beside Chris Pine are jerks.
Maybe I can find a couple things I liked:
There were some enjoyable fight scenes. Not all of them, but I did mostly enjoy the car chase scene.
It is fun to rewatch to laugh at all the poor choices (that's obviously not what they were going for though so that's really a con)
All that being said I will watch a third movie in hopes it more closely resembles the first movie.
