This Happy Feeling (1958)
Charming little story, charming cast
Debbie Reynolds is as cute as ever; Alexis Smith is smart and sexy; Mary Astor is perfect as John Saxon's mother; John Saxon is adorable and sweet. But the interaction between Curt Jurgens and Estelle Winwood really stands out in this film. She is as cuckoo as they come, but also as sweet as they come. He cares for her in a very sweet and quiet way. But the main focus is will he and Reynolds actually get together. One could only hope Reynolds we successful in seducing him, try as she might but, alas she does not succeed. He gives the performance of his life when breaking her heart, with his final wink in her direction utterly disarming. Overall, a light and cheery film, with seasoned professionals looking as if they are having fun making it.
Battle of Britain (1969)
Best flying since "Wings"
1. Reading the not-too-many critiques of the fling sequences, I still suspect many of the reviewers are unfamiliar with the WWI movie "Wings" which pretty much still stands out as the premiere film dedicated to aerial combat. This Battle of Britain comes in a close second.
2. This film is about the battle, not the individual personalities. If it had gone there, it could easily have been 12+ hours long. Some of the scenes stand out especially, i.e.the one with Curd Jurgens and Ralph Richardson--love that scene--two seasoned professionals!
Yes, many of of these performances come off more as cameos, but, again, it is about the battle itself and no one would have seen it if it had ended up being long enough to tell personal stories.
This is a great movie with wonderful performances. If you are a fan of this genre, make sure to find "Wings" and watch it, also.
