In the Dark: Tequila Mockingbird (2022)
Season 4, Episode 8

Flawed characters
18 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, they are messed up. Why does (almost) every character make super bad decisions? Over and over same bad decisions that lead to disaster... or death.

What about how everyone sleeps with the worst possible person? Josh (wannabe cop) sleeps with Chelsea (witness of an active investigation) after she bashes him for sleeping with Murphy (mortal enemy). Their mutual hatred makes for a good hookup? And poor tortured Max can't let Murphy go. I love you. No I hate you. Oh but I really want you. SMH. He hit rock bottom yet one more time in bed is worth jeopardizing everything? This is a sad state of affairs.

Beyond the bed hopping throughout the series the poor life choices and sheer number of deaths directly related is astronomical. Mind blowing how one person can upend so many lives yet seemingly land on her feet like a cat with "unlimited lives". This is criminal in itself. Tbh everyone in this show is guilty of something illegal and deserves time in prison.

All that crazy stuff aside it has entertainment value bc I am still watching to the bitter end. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment (like the characters lol) or just curious how it all ends. I need closure.

Anyway thanks for reading my rant. Hope you are enjoying the push/pull of this wild ride. It started out interesting and promising, now it just needs to end. Not terrible just super frustrating most of time.

Not what I expected, here's why...
13 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After reading reviews (low and high rated), I decided to watch anyway so I could rate/review based on my own experience.

I did not read the novel this is based on but I did look it up on Goodreads and discovered the book is over 550pp (English edition). Converting the story into a script means deleting a lot of scenes, prob ones vital to understanding the story as well as character development. That's why the plot feels weak and full of random gaps. Also based on the many 1-star reviews for the book it seems it's not better (possibly worse) than the movie.

For anyone who watched and feels dissatisfied and confused, there is a 10-star IMDb review with spoilers that answers many questions to help fill in the plot holes. It helped me feel more informed and so I bumped up my rating bc of it. I agree that the movie felt very rushed leaving viewers wondering what happened and why. Plus the end feels like a big leap into the future without any explanation.

Overall the story had potential but the choppy edits between scenes, lack of character development, minimal background, awkward dialogue, made this movie a poorly written, acted and produced disaster teen drama.

And don't believe any blogs promoting this as the next Twilight bc is most definitely is not in the same league or genre. Sorry, truth hurts!

Wish upon a star
14 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I believe this movie is a commemoration to Disney's 100 year anniversary (1923-2023). An homage to its most popular themes and animated characters that honors the ubiquitous magical world of Disney.

There is even a nod to its famous castle and fireworks (seen at the start of every Disney movie) as well as stardust images of the most famous characters drawn alongside the credits. To me it feels like a thank you to the fans for believing in Disney. And take a moment to appreciate its positive message (that adds a little hope to life)... "Dreams do come true!"

Bonus: try to name the original movies for the themes, characters and scenes you recognize. Have fun and make it a game!

Watch until the end of the credits, there's a bonus clip!

Unfocused and lacks depth
24 March 2024
It's not what I anticipated but also not dreadful or ambiguous as some reviews imply. The writing feels unfocused and messy but perhaps it's intentional to reflect that life is messy (there's a line spoken that says as much).

Not hard to follow, it's a fairly basic plot but feels hollow in delivery and drags in parts that are unnecessary to move the story forward or hang too long on moments after the point is made. The subject matter is emotionally heavy (has grit and opportunity to explore deeper) yet the vibe is too light, lacking substance.

We get glimpses of why Belita is broken and about Diana's mental health issues but too much is left unsaid, unexplored. There is a conclusion for both women yet I feel unsatisfied with the story. Slow movie but fast wrap up is how it feels.

I would've been fine if I skipped it. Not worth watching. It's not good, not bad, just blah.

Better than expected
20 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After reading many of the bad reviews I still decided to watch out of curiosity. The trailer was persuasive. And I'm glad I did. This may not be for everyone but really, what content is?!

A "slow burn" series with a satisfying conclusion that wraps up most loose ends and offers a mild twist. Nothing over the top or surprising. Tho the storyline misleads us toward a certain expected villain intentional prob to create "surprise" when the real perp is revealed. Too obvious? Maybe but nothing is confirmed plus details were interesting.

Imho, the build of characters and parallel relationships make this 4-part mini series more unique than the typical drama-thriller of this ilk. Once the 2 timelines (separated by 3 years) is introduced early on, following the 2 main female leads (Emma and Jane) is fairly easy (if you pay attention).

The part I enjoyed most is watching how Jane collects evidence about Emma's death and with each new piece the mystery begins to unravel. However we are still mostly in the dark until nearly the end of ep 4 when everything is revealed.

If you enjoy slow-building stories that are character based with mystery and suspense but without horror, excessive violence or action-packed scenes then this will be an enjoyable watch. If not then best to skip it. If you do commit, keep watching after first credits bc there's one last scene. Enjoy!

A Case of You (2013)

Poor message about dating
7 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Where do I begin? This movie has too many flaws to list. So I'll just focus on the core issue (the message at the heart of it all): poor (potentially illegal) choices in dating lead to a happy ending?!

It was frustrating to watch a wasted opportunity to make a case against "social media stalking" (and showing real world consequences) get flipped into a successful template for finding love.

Everything about this story screams wrong. Don't get me started on crude Vince V (not a fan) with his sexist comment during Sam's book pitch (deserves an eyeroll and face slap). Yes this story is fiction but the statement it makes about dating (c. 2012) gives the impression it's good to follow in Sam's footsteps. That stalking and lying is a good way to start a relationship and this kind of behavior gets rewarded. Shameful, disappointing, not entertaining and def not romantic!!

Skip it. This one made me cringe!

Underrated magical film
6 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A simple yet magical plot with strong main cast and a few unique supporting characters. Devon (Brendan T.) is the main focus of the film and kept me enthralled with his range of emotions, from playful ease to deeply disturbed, drew me deeper into his special world.

I also enjoyed how the parallels between Devon's emotional and physical journey are shown as a series of events and their impact on his mental health. This is not a fast paced movie tho Devon's energy kept the story fresh and moving forward. And this is not a typical rom-com tho elements of romance exist.

This is a single focused film that captures one (mentally challenged) man's unique view and experience on life and love. To me it feels special with moments of heartbreak, hope, honesty, fear, family and the search for love and human connection. Emotions every human can relate to on some level.

It may not be for everyone but it's worth the watch. Dont forget to suspend your disbelief before hitting play. A hidden gem with heartfelt performances.

Better than average treasure hunt
6 March 2022
A fun adventure flick with a few twists that are mostly expected yet interesting. Not edge-of-your-seat action but well-done with solid acting, funny one liners and stunning scenery. Enjoyable for a single viewing.

If you liked it then be sure to stay for the closing credits bc the graphics are top notch and you'll catch the post-credit scene. Yw! ;)

Borrego (2022)

A visceral experience
23 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Borrego tells a story of two characters pushed to their limits when faced with life or death decisions initiated by unfortunate circumstances beyond their control. We follow these two diametrically-opposed characters as their worlds collide and divert into a cat-and-mouse game across a desert wasteland. Racing against time, enduring nature's brutal elements and encountering new obstacles with every step, their urgency for survival is amplified as the odds continue to stack against them. A seemingly endless but undeniably perilous trek across merciless terrain sets in motion an unstoppable series of events drawing everyone into an explosive denouement.

****WARNING: SPOILER ALERT**** On the surface we are propelled into a physical journey with two parallel themes: mankind vs nature and human vs human but there is a subtle subplot of human vs self. It is easy to see how nature tests the resolve of each character but an unforeseen twist shows us how revealing dark secrets allows two tortured souls to find common ground in their respective suffering. Nothing is how it seems but when you take a closer look you may discover the truth.

One Winter Wedding (2021 TV Movie)
3/10
Boring
6 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
1 star for scenery, 1 star for the best friends and 1 star for the hotel mystery

This movie was a hot mess. Organizing a DIY wedding in one week was over the top unbelievable. The engaged leading couple had no chemistry. The drastic change in appearance of the groom was distracting and disconnect from the male lead we met in first two movies. The bride was overly suspicious of the groom constantly questioning him. And her book pitch felt like a forced storyline. Plus the publisher was a bit overbearing with her deadlines and demands. Who expects a pitch on the author's wedding weekend? Plus all the scenes were strung together by a thread. At least the last scene was interesting tho having a virtual best man for the entire movie didn't work. Viewer is left with more questions than answers with this sloppy production... save yourself 2 hours!

MUST SEE!!!
4 March 2021
Moxie has a message that is powerful, inspiring and uplifting which is exactly how I felt after watching it. I am so proud of Netflix, the writers and cast for creating/producing insightful, relevant content. I encourage all teens and young adults to experience this film with friends and parents, then open up dialogue and learn how to be the change. No one is excluded from supporting change, progress and equality!

"You need to calm down"
2 March 2021
We live in a messy world with conflict and contradictions. Boycotting a series that reflects that reality is not progressive. Poor ratings from non-viewers based on blind allegiance to a pop star do not speak to the quality of this series. Comments taken out of context are being misconstrued and wildly escalated by misguided youth with no real life experience. Skip the bad reviews especially from angry fans. No show on any platform can appeal to everyone. Viewers who actually watched the whole series know better and will recognize the complex, interesting and diverse story performed by talented cast. Look forward to S2!!

Season 2 is a MUST!
28 August 2020
If you appreciate Jane Austen's work then you will most likely enjoy this series. However I would advise not to compare it to her usual style of writing. View it with an open mind and you'll find it entertains on its own merits.

The characters and plot exude a touch of modern sensibility bc this series is based on an incomplete manuscript left by the author upon her death. In my opinion, the writer who completed her work did a great job flushing out the existing story with his own interpretation of Austen's world. It feels a bit more bold and racy at times with certain scenes and subject matter regarding this period yet surprisingly well-suited for this group of evolved characters.

The 8 episodes keep your attention and can be easily watched in two days. But Season 1 feels incomplete and needs at least one more season to wrap up open storylines and give the viewer a satisfactory Austen-style conclusion. Hope PBS will produce a Season 2 (and 3) very soon.

Art imitating life
15 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The moment you see Nicholas and Ava wearing masks when talking to Karolina (who's been infected by the "virus") it feels less like fiction and more like an adaptation of our current pandemic. A bit unnerving to realize that a series plot and reality aren't that far apart. Take a minute to reflect on that connection...

Do yourself a favor and skip it
12 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Never heard of this movie (title is a twist on a quote by Irene Dunne) but thought it could be an interesting offbeat indie. Wrong! There's too many reasons to avoid it, I listed the most obvious ones.

Plot. What plot? Oh wait struggling actress (Jules) who can't figure out who she wants to date or anything else in her life. There's no sense or purpose in this storytelling. Jules is clueless and aimless at 25. Really? Which leads me to the next big issue.

Casting. Judging by the acting there seems to be a severe lack of talent, chemistry or both. Everyone looks older than their characters' ages. So the emotional immaturity of the characters conflicts with their appearance. Plus the mashup of characters don't mesh. Maybe it's the writing?

Dialogue. The awkward conversations and interaction between characters in every scene is cringe-worthy. Who talks like that? Example: scenes of Jules' first date with her director (whom she just met that day). If a guy spoke to me like that I'd walk out not "fall in love". It's not just poorly written or acted it's just plain bad!

Directing. It's Brian's debut so he's a bit "green" but I can't help wonder why he chose THIS project. I looked to me like everyone was just winging it. Amateur hour at best. And the reasons go on from there...

One last point, it was very difficult to believe Jules gets hit on by every guy she meets (even if they were all losers). More comedic than realistic.

You've been warned. Watch at your own peril. My rating is actual zero stars.

Interesting but writing needs work
13 March 2019
The concept of solving a murder with a crossword puzzle is interesting and could work but the first episode has weak points. The mystery of "who dunnit" pulls you in bc of the intellectual connection between Lacey and Logan. However a romantic chemistry is definitely lacking. Maybe it's a slow start? My main concern is the writing, it feels awkward. May lines don't feel authentic or even appropriate. I'd like to see a more fluid natural flow in the scenes especially the interaction between leading characters. The series has promise if the writing improves. Enjoyable for a mystery movie but needs work.
