Valkoinen peura (1952)
Beautiful and interesting
I really like this one, i think it's one of the best old Finnish movies. The landscapes and photography are beautiful, which is not very surprising for film shooted in Lapland, and the movie itself is interesting in terms of plot and style. The story is based into old folk-story, so it is quite different and unique plot for horror movie. The cast, especially Mirjami Kuosmanen and Åke Lindman, made good job in this one.
As people have many times said, this movie is not very scary, but how many old horror flicks are? I don't recall being very scared in any movie made 1950's or earlier. This movie is still very interesting and unique. It's a great part of the history of Finnish cinema. I recommend this for all fans of old black and white movies.
Der Name der Rose (1986)
I don't know really...
This is really a movie that makes me confused. There are good things in it, but in the end i felt upset. The thing that made me feel upset is the fact i loved the novel, written by Umberto Eco. If i had watched this without reading the book i would give it ten out of ten. I'm historian, and this was one of the few historical movies i've ever seen that really portraits history well. I didn't find much to complain about that. However, as a huge fan of the book, i find the end of the movie very frustrating. It was made way too happy. In Eco's novel there was a real hell on earth in the end, now we have this Hollywood fairytale. I'm not surprised that after this, Eco didn't like the idea of any other of his books converted to movies. So, in comparison to original book, i give it 5 out of ten. My bottom line is: Good movie, very bad translation from the book. I give it 7, because its a good compromise.
Talvisota (1989)
Great portrait of the horrible war.
I think this movie is one of the most realistic war-movies ever made. My grandfather fought in Taipale and Kollaa and wrote a book about it, and i think this movie portraits the conditions and the nature of the warfare there very well. The only thing that bothered me a bit is that the freezing weather doesn't really come up... the winter when this was shooted was one of the mildest (warmest) for years, while the winter -39 was one of the coldest in history. Of course, there was not much the crew could do about it. Anyway, a great movie, which i warmly recommend for everyone. I hope someone would also make a good picture of the ultimate frozen hell, the motti-battles in region of Suomussalmi, maybe of the point of view of the menaced Russian 44th or 163rd division. That would be interesting to see...
