After three viewings during which I discover something new I've missed every time, I can say that there is so very much to look at and understand here. There are some major deviations from the book, which is a highly original piece of writing but I'm not quibbling about that as I enjoy both film and book. The overriding message is that human life is worth nothing more to the aliens than insects lives are to humans. They have come here to harvest human skin and they work diligently and relentlessly at their task ignoring any emotional plight their actions cause. Things go wonky when our protagonist ( who remains nameless throughout) decides to find out what it's like to be human. There are so many interesting and intelligent nuances and subtle observations along the way which have wider meaning., so many wonderful studies of the human condition as seen through the eyes of an ET. The brutality of the actions of both us and them are shocking at times but everything resonates. The candid portrayal of Glaswegians is a bonus and the stunning cinematography of the Scottish highlands just adds further plus points. I could rave on forever , read the other 10 star reviews for more interesting takes on what's happening here. If you love film, science fiction and Scarlet Johansson in the pink, you can't go wrong.

The Ghost Writer
(2010)
Was it written by a 6th former ?
12 June 2022
With a cringey script , ridiculous English stereotypes and Ewan McGregors downright hilarious English accent , I thought I was watching some second rate ITV drama. As for the storyline, we've seen it all before. Only Pierce Brosnans acting can save the day....
Mona Lisa
(1986)
Even the supposed hero beats women when he can't get what he wants
24 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So typically eighties. Our protagonist George is portrayed as a simple but sweet natured guy. After realising he's been duped into finding Hid love interests girlfriend for her, he physically attacks her out of disappointment. Far from portraying him as the sad little Neanderthal he is, the film ends with a shot of him as doting father strolling arm in arm with his estranged daughter. The message is clear- even the loveliest geezers can smack a bird when they don't get their own way. This film is a sad indictment on the eighties.
The Green Planet

The legend that is David Attenborough
30 January 2022
Not withstanding the amazing research and photography in this series, at 95 years of age, David Attenborough has to be the greatest presenter who ever lived. His enthusiasm and sense of joy in nature never cease to amaze.

Like going to rural China for two hours
30 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you were ever curious about what life is like for everyday people in rural China here's your chance to find out. This film is not for the type of people who happily watch blockbusters or mainstream American movies. It's art house Chinese, a road movie almost. The plot is at times a bit confusing and drawn out as we follow the central character on a journey to find his nephew, learning about his life as we go along the way. the film is shot using a handheld camera and following vehicles along it makes you feel as if you are on a tour of the local area. I love Chinese cinema so it didn't take much to persuade me to sit through this gem.
Mr. Robot
(2015–2019)
It's actually a showcase for abstract artists
11 March 2020
I enjoy Mr. Robot although I do find it somewhat overly violent ,it uses fresh innovative ideas and you are always surprised by something which happens in every episode. However what I Like the very best best About the show is that in almost every scene in every corporate office or every home there are some wonderful abstract paintings . I would really like to know who all these works are painted by . If only I could get my hands on a list of the artists !
Bone Tomahawk
(2015)
Peculiar in so many ways
22 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
You don't see many films like this one where the attention to characters personalities and their often inane dialogue Manages to keep you interested in the very slow plot. I would describe it as a kind of mix between the descent and Dawn til Dusk the cannibals themselves put me in mind of the troglodytes in the 1960 version of the Time Machine. It's over long at two hours but the reason for this is to get to know all of the protagonists Gory in parts and somewhat baffling in others.

(2019)
Cinema at its very best
12 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not keen on blockbusters. We always know the heroes will get the job done at the end so we just sit back and enjoy the ride. Nothing is different here aside from the fact that the journey we go on is a total mind blowing visceral experience that will keep you enthralled from start to finish. The sets are so immersive you feel as if you are actually on this journey yourself and the story moves along at just the right pace with a good mix of danger and tenderness woven in. The music is top drawer and the acting too. Rarely will you see a film with five of Britain's top actors in where each of them only gets two minutes screen time. Oscar will love this one.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
(2018)
Unusual and clever
1 January 2020
Beautifully observed vignettes which give believable insights into the lives of early settlers to the Wild West. Ironic, tragic and sometimes comic, each one is entertaining in its own way and serves as a reminder of the harshness of the time.
The Ghost of Greville Lodge
(2000)
Like a bad children's TV drama from the nineties.

Darkness: Those Who Kill
(2019– )
Very pedestrian Scandi noir
19 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Same old same old Here as we follow a troubled police officer investigating the heinous crimes of a very troubled rapist and murderer. All shot in green and grey tones this series tips and nod to classics such as Borgen and Bridge but alas gets nowhere near them with its very laboured and clunky script, plotlines and acting. Worth a watch if nothing else is on TV.
Their Finest
(2016)
Addresses the profound sexism of the era
6 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film goes out of its way to highlight the casual sexist behaviour that was rampant in the everyday life of a 1940's woman and comments on it throughout the film. The subject matter is an interesting new angle on the blitz story ,filled with many of Britain's finest actors and through our writer heroine we see a side of the war you wouldn't necessarily have any knowledge of unless you were a historian.
