Reptile (2023)
Excellent neo-noir
This is an excellent film that has a really creepy vibe all the way through. The paranoia and suspicion make the viewer doubt every characters honesty. The atmosphere builds steadily and the plot has good twists which keeps the uncertainty brewing.
It has a strong cast and the acting is superb. One gets really invested in the main characters. It's great to see Alicia Silverstone back in a major role. Benecio del Toro's brooding presence is perfect for the film.
I would highly recommend this film. The camera work adds to the creepiness and the the whole thing is a very well directed and acted package. Enjoy!
Bull (2021)
Grimly violent with a clever twist
I always like Neil Maskell in films so I thought I'd give this a go. At first it seems like just another one man rampage revenge thriller but there are unanswered questions all the way through which add an air of mystery to the proceedings.
The violence is pretty graphic and the whole thing is really really dark. It's not a feel good movie by any stretch of the imagination.
There is a twist at the end which answers many of the questions but also, if this is even possible, makes the whole thing even darker. The plot kept me hooked all the way through and the simplicity of the film makes the ending all the more impactive. Highly recommended.
Horror in the High Desert (2021)
Slow burn but worth the wait
If you like programmes like Missing 411 and films like the Blair Witch Project then you'll love this as it's basically a combination of the two. Really well done. A creepy, unnerving offering. I actually didn't know about it and thought it was a real documentary (like Missing 411) until near the end.
The characters are believable and there's some nice red herrings early on to make it seem more real.
It won't be everyone's cup of tea but I was certainly gripped from start to finish. I know there's a lot of these types of films about but this is definitely one of the better quality ones. Highly recommended.
Juno (2007)
A selfish film
The main message of the film is "Don't worry if you get pregnant. You can dump the kid on someone else and carry on with your life. The child's feelings and future are irrelevant." Its a nasty film that takes consumerism and throw away culture to another level.
The Escort (2015)
A Pleasant Surprise
I'm not sure what I was expecting but this is a funny and touching film. The acting is good and the characters are engaging. And it's got Bruce Campbell in it! Yay!
Vampyr (1932)
A disturbing masterpiece
It has a bizarre plot and the sound isn't great but these combine to make it a really creepy expressionist classic. A must for horror fans. Better than most modern offerings.
Ready or Not (2019)
A joyous, blood soaked romp.
This should be a formulaic, fairly boring, splatter movie but actually its a very well written, well acted, scary, funny film. Highly recommended!
Hotel Artemis (2018)
Worth a watch
Interesting plot, good characters, well acted. This is an unusual film that cleverly limits the "conventional" setting of dystopian films to a single building. This makes the viewers focus more on the characters which makes it both enjoyable, poignant and interesting.
Woman on the Run (1950)
Excellent noir classic
Ann Sheridan is outstanding in this edge of your seat masterpiece. A brilliant script sets off superb cinematography and brilliant acting.
Arkansas (2020)
Excellent neo-noir
Really strong characters. Good, complex plot. Clever, funny dialogue.
I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007)
Excellent fun
This should be cheesy and lame but thanks to Amy Heckerling's directorial skill and a superb cast its not. Some genuine laugh out loud moments and a clever script make for a really enjoyable film.
Static (1985)
A Fantastic Film
I saw this film in the late 80s on TV. I have only seen it once but I still consider it one the best films I've ever seen, if not the best. It is weird, funny, sad and atmospheric. It has lodged these impressions in my memory like no other film I've ever seen. The music is spot-on for the excellent cinematography and the acting is wonderful. If you ever get a chance to see this film please, please watch it. It will enrich your life!
A Field in England (2013)
Captivating, weird and clever
This is a very unusual film which is disturbing, amusing and creepy in equal measure. The acting and the dialogue are wonderful. The strangeness of it could be off-putting but Wheatley manages to maintain the integrity of the whole bizarre vehicle with great cinematography and tension.
There is one scene which literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. It's like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas but set in a field. In England. In the 17th century. Enjoy. There's nothing else like it out there.
Apollo 18 (2011)
Genuinely claustrophobic and scary
A good original take on found footage. Good premise, especially if you like conspiracy theories. I found it a gripping and very creepy film. The basic (by today's standards) technology and cramped spacecraft really ramp up the fear and tension. Don't dismiss this film without seeing it. It's good, scary, nail-biting stuff.
