Never Been Kissed (1999)
Okay
Okay, so before I start I would like to make it clear that I saw this movie late on in life, and it's already considered kind of old, which I'm sure has had a huge impact on my judgment of the film... I know that this is a hugely loved film by many women (and some men I know, for that matter) so I don't mean to upset any cult followers with my rating of it, but unfortunately by the time I saw this film there was nothing really unique about it. It's all been done before, and after having been given so many good reports, I guess my expectations were just too high. I love Drew Barrymore, I think she's a great actress, but this can hardly be considered one of her finest roles (that's not a complaint, by the way, just saying). So really I don't feel that I've missed out on much. In the film Drew had to wait until she was nearly 25 to get the kiss of her dreams, I had to wait that long to see this movie, and like the kiss, some things are kind of over rated.
Going the Distance (2010)
Love it, love it, love it!
Fantastic film! It checks all the boxes that a romantic comedy should! Drew Barrymore was of course, amazing, and while it took me a minute or two to get used to seeing Justin Long playing a serious character (I just happen to have seen him play a lot of strange or less serious roles) he did a marvelous job of breaking the mold and was even quite the hottie in his role as leading man. I laughed, I cried, I recommend a watch!
Just Friends (2005)
A Bit Of Fun
A nostalgia educing romantic comedy about coming home and the pursuit of the one that got away. By this point this movie seems in no way original, the idea has been redone a million times, but even though this movie came out in '05 it has a kind of nostalgic 90's feel to it like the kind of ridiculous romantic comedies I used to watch as a teenager. I found it quite enjoyable, and it's family friendly too so everyone can enjoy...Pus, who wouldn't get a kick out of seeing Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit?
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Wonderfully Different
Wonderful film in which Bradley Cooper gives a stand up performance as a rehabilitating bipolar patient who is taught a thing or two about society's perception of crazy by a grieving widow. Fantastic performances from all sides in this unusual romantic drama, I was completely convinced from the get go and it is worth a watch for that reason alone, but the story is also original and entertaining in and of itself, so definitely add it to your watch list.
That Awkward Moment (2014)
Not A Romantic Comedy...
I give this movie a six, because it still made me laugh, especially in the first half of the film, but to me this movie is not a romantic comedy at all, it's closer to a drama. It seems typical of the type of "romantic" movies being produced today, they're all just reminiscent of the fact that most young people now a days have no concept of what love is and are all harboring some form or another of commitment issues, though this movie really highlighted that fact within the dating culture of men, though in reality it seems to be across the board. That being said, I am sure that many people would get a kick out of this film, as I mentioned it does have it's funny aspects, particularly in the beginning, but something about this class of film just annoys me. Perhaps it's the fact that the characters are all in their twenties and yet they all have their careers so neatly in order but their love life is so incredibly dysfunctional... It seems to hint at one aspect of life that many people can relate to these days whilst simply glossing over the rest. Perhaps I am thinking too much into it, but unless a "romantic comedy" either has me in fits of laughter or at least leaves me with that feel good reaction, it's not likely to rank very highly in my books.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
The Feels
I'm not the biggest fan of Ryan Reynolds, but I loved him in this feel good film. It's the kind of film you watch when you're alone and in need of cheering up, or when your cuddling with someone special on the couch... It's the story of a father telling his daughter the "how I met your mother" story, and while this telling is a little messy, it's also beautiful.
Mr. Right (2015)
Perfect Date Night Movie
This is not your typical boy meets girl. In this film, the girl is one of questionable psychological stability, and the boy is a self actualizing gun-for-hire with brain damage... But hey, when you know, you know. The psychotic quirkiness of the characters makes for some highly entertaining television, and no action was sacrificed for the sake of the underlying romantic theme. A fun film with a little something for everybody.
Self/less (2015)
Highly Entertaining
I loved this movie. It's one of those theoretical stories that challenges the ethics of medical and scientific advancement, and whilst being thoroughly entertaining, it also leaves you with a lot to think about...
Damien Hale is an old man, he has been informed that he has only six months to live, but just as he is making peace with the fact, he is offered a second chance at a rejuvenated life. What would you do? He goes through with the procedure, but shortly after begins to discover that the choices he's made have dire consequences... Again he must chose, and again. What would you do, turn a blind eye to all that you know for the purpose of ensuring your lasting self identity, or lose your mind for the sake of others?
Secondhand Lions (2003)
Fantastic
One of my favorite movies of all time. This is a feel good, great for the whole family and loved by viewers of all ages. I went into this movie not knowing anything about it, and was surprised to find that I'd stumbled upon something special... Next time you're in the mood for a feel good film that will make you smile, just watch it!
Fun Mom Dinner (2017)
Hilarious!
I can't imagine why this movie's ratings are so low, because it is hysterical! A real chick comedy if ever I saw one... I haven't enjoyed a movie so much in a while. Don't watch the trailer cause it spoils a few of the good bits, but rest assured, you're in for a treat. This is the kind of movie I love to watch with my girl friends or my sisters.
She's Out of My League (2010)
It's a solid 8.
I'm the type of person that loves to spend a few evenings a month alone in front of the TV with popcorn and wine (classy, I know), and my genre of choice is all things comedy. For those of you who love to laugh, you'll get a kick out of this one. It definitely falls under the category of "Romantic Comedy", but don't let that deter you guys, there was plenty of stupid guy humor in there too, and whilst it's by no means a family movie, there was a little something in there that all individuals can relate to...
