Mank (2020)
"How can i put this nicely...
I may be a loose cannon, but you m friend are an outsider."
I don't have a dog in this fight, but is seems to me that the above might be the truth. There are so many people trying to belittle Mank's contribution on citizen Kane, but his name is on the script credits. If he was that unimportant, that wouldn't happen. That doesn't take away from Welles carrier but it does from people's affinity to built myths. I thought it was a nice movie overall, not special but entertaining.
Reckoning (2019)
If this review doesn't help is probably the feeling you will get watching the series.
I don't know, it was surprisingly straight forward on who was the serial killer and there is no in depth analysis of the characters, so...I'd say it was kind of trying to make the point that we are more or less psychos but clearly this cannot fly.
O Mecanismo (2018)
very nice series
Everything else is pretty much said. I believe the two main characters Ibraim and Ruffo are excellently portrayed, especially Enrique Diaz did an amazing job with Ibraim. The whole soundtrack was also excellent.
Marseille (2016)
the two series are unbalanced
The setting is nice, interesting, always nice to get the feel of a city you've never leaved in and i love the power games in politicsas theme. I can even excuse the storyline of the disguised son although the director goes to such length in the beggining of the series to point out the similarities between the two.
However Departieu's son turns from a wolf into a sheep in the second season, without any reason whatsoever. So i'd say season one is a pretty good one but season two is really not up to par.
Karppi (2018)
Nice production but the story is ridiculous
So the main characters with their quirks, the settings, the photography, the music are all very nice. But from the moment we see the neighbor in his greenhouse everyone knows who the murderer is, and even earlier from the moment we see how the body is buried we know it cannot be a corporation. They go however to such lengths to add artificial suspects in this, it is almost insulting. I could go in detail, analyzing how absurd the alternative narratives are in this, but really there is not reason for that.
I hope season 2 improves the screenwriting, since everything else is nice.
Eteros ego (2016)
Nice film for a Greek film in a genre populated by excellent work.
The movie had an interesting story, an excellent performance by the Dadakaridis, and everything else was a bit pedestrian.
Nevertheless it is probably the best Greek film or series in that Genre so i'd say overall it was a very good effort.
Some things could have been better, most importantly imo the beggining and the end of the film. They feel completely wrong and rather misleading for what the film turns out to be.
Especially with the ending I have no idea what they were thinking.
SPOILERS: you have the main role pulling his father's plug, deciding between his job and his duty as paralleled with the murderer and instead you go with a flashback of two people we couldn't care less for an ending?
Why?? It just felt completely wrong.
Anyway, let's hope there is more and better to come. Dadakaridis as Lainis, has enough juice for more films imo.
p.s what was the point of the friend or the car for that matter? None offered anything but confusion.
House of Cards (2013)
It's not that it was always great with spacey
But this last season was beyond bad!
Robin Wright is a good actress but way out of he depth here (it takes a special kind of talent to let him "talk to the camera")
Anyway in the end hypocrisy prevailed. A series looking at a seriously troubled hero, panicked once the actor portraying him showed some vague similarities..
p.s I was impressed with the series score, the title theme was not something to write home about but everything else seems to have improved from season to season.
Deep State (2018)
It can be better but its no that bad either.
Somehow it works.
Sound atmosphere, beginning titles are beyond excellent. The actors are interesting choices, perhaps a bit too theatrical, in any case not the norm (which is a good thing imo).. The general atmosphere is nice but the script is a bit basic and something is amiss.
Perhaps the suggestion that even the worst of people (the bad guys here) still are good parents is an odd choice making the hero not very different to them..
Anyway you get a glimpse of early homeland with a weaker script and a house of cards kind of ending which is serviceable for next season I guess..
p.s the brother character makes no sense to me, unless he was somehow edited out of the story at some point...
Hell or High Water (2016)
A nice story..
Perhaps a bit overhyped though. Performances were great, but Bridges insistence in the end made little sense to me. I'd say generally after the two brothers scheme succeeded the film was over for me. Unfortunately not for the director.
Zimna wojna (2018)
an excellent film
A nice story "told" impeccably visually. Which is what cinema is about. It did not change the world I know, it didn't change my beliefs, it didn't transport me to a higher state of consciousness but it doesn't have to really.
People are looking too much from filmmakers, just read a book instead.
Army of One (2016)
Not a good film but..
I am at awe at what Cage did in this film.
He took a parody role and made it believable. It is a performance to be studied by the next generation of actors. I seriously cannot imagine any current actor being able to pull this off.
To teleftaio simeioma (2017)
It is suprising..
How easy and quickly our grandfathers/fathers forgave.
Based on a true story, the film did not need the slow motion scenes near the end, neither that last being prepped up to be something grand which in the end it wasn't.
It is unthinkable to have to leave like that, yet there are still people who have to.
The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989)
It doesn't water down after a couple of viewings.
Some films are like that.
It is not as if this is a masterpiece but perhaps there is some truth within the film, the acting or the relationships between the actors? Who knows.. But i do feel that films that one can revisit, even if there is nothing new to see but somehow touch you deserve a lot more than an 6.8.
The Square (2017)
Not an art film, but a nice comedy nevertheless!
The setting is that of a modern art museum but that is not the story...actually many of these jokes could have place in an American teen comedy but indeed here they are handled with a bit more class.
Anyway many scenes takes their time to develop but not unreasonably long and for its rating it was surprisingly funny (anything over 7 on a comedy is either because the film was made 60 years ago or a drama advertised as comedy to sell more tickets..).
I'd say the scene with the cheerleaders was completely unnecessary and the ending was also weak, so one could see the film finishing after the interview and it could have been just as good (if not better)
The Squeeze (2015)
The color of money.
was a nice film. The Hustler was even better which makes you wonder.. What are the chances the writer/director of this film never saw either?? I mean honestly, i would have some difficulty putting my name under a story like that and i do wonder how this guy did. Now as for the rest..lets just say the guy is no Scorsese and mcDonald ain't no Paul Newman either...
Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
i felt nostalgic when it ended...
I find all TV series end up being nothing more than a theme to cover the soap opera underneath (which is the basic difference they have with films). Anyway what i loved about this one is that close to the end it just threw the fake theme away and just run with the people..It almost felt as if the creators loved these characters and knew that they wouldn't get another season..
cool and nostalgic.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
visually interesting and at moments gripping but generally very shallow
I found this to be an visually impressive film with a weak story but what hurts most this nice film is Zimmer's laughable soundtrack.
Such an embarrassment and so sad but without a doubt the king is naked. I really wonder how much this guy is charging lately for a couple of saw-tooth filtered drones and some Sheperd tone ear trickery..This was probably made up Dunkirk outtakes or vice versa.
What an epic failure that was musically..
p.s the villain is out of a b movie p.s 2 The first film left you with a very interesting discussion regarding deckard's identity. This one leaves you with the certainty that what comes up next is something we've seen in thousand films in Hollywood..
p.s 3 That final action scene in the flooded car, Deckard? That's pure comedy definitely not drama..
Dunkirk (2017)
a near masterpiece, definitely the work of an artist.
I am mostly nitpicking here... Anyway. The last ~10 minutes were not necessary imo from a cinematic point of view, perhaps they were from a sentimental-historic point of view but if the film ended the moment the soldiers are unloaded from the ships back to England and slowly are leaving while handed blankets it would be an exquisite exercise in form.
The music although very well produced follows the same ol' pattern from most Zimmer- Nolan collaborations. A stylistic approach standing above all these films making it's "manipulative" power very upfront, almost annoying.
It works very well but it starts to feel a bit gimmicky. The ending music though, more like a Vangelis copycat, is actually quite bad.
As for the critic about the lack of character development etc?
I would like to believe that the fear of shame the soldier feels in the train is the directors hidden critic for the audience asking character development although probably not..
A masterpiece is not a bunch of ticks a movie gets in x number of categories. This is a strongly emotional movie and if someone cannot experience empathy for the desperation, fear and horror young kids experience in Dunkirk, the suffocation of drowning etc surely using "props" to build a character wouldn't satisfy them either. For me character development would be against what this movie is about.
