Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
What the hell is this?!
That was my reaction after watching 10 minutes of this movie. Without getting much into spoilers and story... Ill just give you my take.
This is probably the weakest Marvel movie. Thor's story, character etc has always been powerful and uplifting. This doesnt look like a Thor movie at all. Its comedy is awful and forced. The characters dont get any scope. The action, CGI and storyline is generic. It seems like Marvel Universe is now making filler movies in between to reach the Avengers finale.
What did I find positive about this? Nothing. Its not deadpool. Its not Spiderman. Its probably got Guardians of the Galaxy vibe and looks odd. Dont watch it.
Meeruthiya Gangsters (2015)
Sleazy, Lowbrow entertainment
Clearly Zeishan Quadri wears his influences on his sleeve. Writer of Gangs of Wasseypur gave a perfect tribute to Anurag Kashyap, Ram Gopal Verma, Quentin Tarantino cinema.
The film is less about the story and more about the improvised screenplay. All the characters are dark, sleazy, dirty and perfectly capture the environment of UP. Since Ive interacted with a lot of them in small doses... I could clearly pick the nuances highlighted in the movie.
All the actors played their part perfectly. Mukul Dev gets a special mention since he is very underrated as an actor. Female characters dont get much scope.
The problems with the movie seem like there wasnt a straight direction of storyline. It seems wayward and less focused. Not a lot of effort had to be put into the 'light' comic elements... since we are dealing with comedy of errors thriller here.
In the end I would just point out that I dont know if cinema influences audience or the world influences cinema... but either way... it was sad to see the enjoyment loafers had watching this movie in theaters. Im sure they are somewhat criminal minded just like the characters of the movie. And these kind of movies that makes crime look 'fun' dont teach the right morality to the youth of today.
Kalyug (1981)
Slow and lethargic. Maybe ahead of its times for all the wrong reasons
Shyam Benegal, Shashi Kapoor, Raj Babbar, Rekha, Anant Nag etc were all renowned artists. However this movie might have looked good on paper and quite ambitious, but it runs slower than an old 80s Doordarshan TV show.
The pace is lethargic. The melodrama is filled with gaps of silence and non-sensical activities. Being without a song (which was probably an anomaly in those times) it is dragged to 3 hrs without much twists and turns.
Reema Laagoo & Supriya Pathak were strangely in bold roles with nothing much to do other than huff n puff in bed. Infact it was cringey to watch it with family as the scenes came out of the blue and didnt take the movie forward. They seem forced to show how 'arthouse' and shockingly experimental Indian cinema was getting at the time. Rekha has not much to do.
Male actors had more meatier roles but not enough to highlight a few.
The main culprit is the screenplay and director. The pace is so lethargic that it reminds you of old television melodrama shows which didnt have much going on other than people walking around without background music.
Talvar (2015)
I would have preferred a documentary
If you compare this to a regular mainstream hindi flick, its Citizen Kane. If you compare this to inspired-by-real-life thriller/dramas... then it flawed, unnecessary and anti-climatic.
The movie tries, but ends up neither a who-dunnit, nor a social commentary, nor a movie that exposes corruption, nor does it sheds light on anything shocking.
The movie is based on a botched investigation of a famous double murder.
The investigation aspect shown in the movie is flawed. Even a regular audience member can point out mistakes and assumptions being portrayed as evidence that no one could think of. The corruption/botched up investigation aspect is lightly touched upon. Then there is a parallel track of Irrfan and Tabu's separation which seems completely unnecessary and idiotic. It does not symbolize anything related to the story and looks absurd.
Performances are fine. Indian cinema has definitely produced such close-to-real-life now and then, so this isnt anything special. Irrfan Khan is a splendid actor who doesnt need my vote. But this seems like a cakewalk role for him. It couldve been portrayed by anybody. In fact, he looks like a caricature of his usual self. Konkona is another fabulous actress. But her character doesnt have anything special to do in the movie. That too couldve been portrayed by anybody. Seems more insulting to the genre and serious cinema if you take known actors to sell your movie.
I wouldve preferred a thoroughly researched documentary than this.
The Heat (2013)
Another feminazi propaganda flick from Paul Fei(a)g
What can you expect other than this from Paul Fei(a)g. A self proclaimed 'comedy' that's raunchy only coz the lead characters are cussing (which as you know is the funniest thing ever right? F word hahaha. Instant laughter) which has subtle instances of awkward misogyny and blatant instances of chest bashing misandry.
The movie is not funny. I didn't laugh at anything. The lead characters are an awkward nerdy FBI agent Sandra Bullock who tries to be 'sexy' with her 50 year old body and face... and... Melissa Mccarthy (Boston PD) who obviously takes the burden of being the comedy factor. How? By cussing and being fat. Being a gutter mouth is instant laughter right guys?
It has stereotypical male characters as in all Paul Fei(a)g movies who are pussies. A chief at Boston PD who gets cussed out by Melissa every second... gets screamed and thrown things at. But keeps mum. An assistant at FBI HQ Marlon Wayans who wants to ask Bullock out but is shot down. An albino DEA agent who gets cussed out and then the writers sprinkle some out-of-the-left-field misogynist dialogues which makes it OK for him to be shot in the end the reason being he was a misogynist. The male antagonist who gets shot in the balls as in other Paul Fei(a)g movies. The FBI head is called 'puss in boots' coz he doesn't take the decisions Bullock n Mccarthy want.
Coz there's nothing more witty than propagating that all men are bad. All men are to be shot in the balls. All men think women are losers at workplace. Its tough being a woman at workplace and super easy being a man. And they are dumb so they need to be hit with tic tacs even though they are the woman's superior (undeserving obviously).
