First (2014)
The most romantic web series on YouTube
First is the most romantic web series on YouTube, hands down. The chemistry between the two lead characters is as potent as possible, and every episode, we are clinging onto their every word, discovering their past, present, and future. This Issa Rae-produced series is a stand out from most YouTube series in that all the central categories - acting, direction, writing, production - are all very well done and never distracting. Also, bonus points for showcasing black relationships so beautifully and such a relatable fashion. Eagerly awaiting the next season (if it will ever happen). 9/10!
Teenagers (2014)
A cinematic and engaging web series with a diverse cast that continues to flourish
This is one of the first web series I ever watched and from the first to the second season, it has flourished into one of the most engaging and cinematic series on YouTube. With a diverse cast that includes Emmanuel Kabongo and Chloe Rose, this series takes viewers on a roller coaster ride of drama, that never feels forced or inauthentic. Similar to the UK series Skins, Teenagers follows a group of kids from different backgrounds, sexual orientations, etc, all connected by various relationships and circumstances. The dialog is extremely well written and the acting is top notch. The cinematography is also beautiful and the show has developed a distinct, dark, yet colorful style that's exciting to watch. Emmanuel Kabongo is a stand-out for his sensitive portrayal of a black teenager that doesn't fit the usual stereotypes we see on TV. 9/10!
Giants (2017)
An emotionally resonant web series that could use some polishing
This is a great web series that is emotionally resonant, however, it could use a bit more polishing in the post department. The writing is there, but the direction feels a bit all over the place. Some of the shots are awkwardly framed and the cutting feels like it could be tighter. The episodes all feel like they drag a bit, but with a great cast, you usually won't notice. 7/10! Looking forward to season 2.
21 Thunder (2017)
A top notch television show that isn't only for soccer fans
I love 21 Thunder because I can watch it without caring about the sport of soccer, or understanding the rules of the game. Like many reviews have said, the best parts of this show are off the field and that's where the heart of the drama works. Sometimes the direction feels a bit lazy and some scenes feel rushed, but these issues never truly take away from the core essence of the show. The thrills keep coming. I think the series needs another season to continue to develop it's potential. Emmanuel Kabongo and Stephanie Bennett are stand outs for their authentic portrayals of anxiety and confidence as both blossoming and ex-soccer stars. Conrad Pla is also superb, especially in his Spanish-speaking scenes, as the sketchy coach of the 21 under team. You can binge all episodes on the CBC website if you're in Canada. Enjoy! 8/10!
