Skater Girl (2021)
American Dream - what saviour BS
Two westerners come to a small Indian village that has huge challenges including that local kids cannot afford uniforms, text books and families are struggling to feed themselves due to debt. So the hero westerners buy the children skateboards. They then get Indian Government money to put in a skatepark for the village that does not yet have running water and sanitation. Everyone is happy.
Gets three stars because at least the filming and child actors were really good.
The Taqwacores (2010)
Underated best movie I have seen in a while
A fresh perspective on a scene that hasn't really been looked at. 2nd generation groups subcultures is massively under explored in cinema. This film does it well. Excellent acting, the conversations and scenes are fun and sometimes very candid. In a short space of time unpicking the constant conflict that 2nd generation minorities go through internally and within subgroup. It captures the ethos of punk and politics of the two groups. Yet entertaining throughout.
Okja (2017)
Patronizing propaganda
I think watchers need to know that the movie contains propaganda for animal welfare and against the meat industry. The first half is beautiful family friendly, and the 2nd half takes a turn to a more Mature audience rating. I could have loved this movie, but felt the message of the story could be delivered in a less patronizing and bias way. I'm on the fence about this movie.
