GORE FUN FEST!!
10 December 2021
Pure entertainment! Gore to satisfy the blood lustful SAW franchise fans. Refreshing to have a more ethnically diverse cast with quality actors. Fun to see Chris Rock & Samuel. L in non-comedic roles. Satisfying to see some vigilante justice served.

No; it it's not as poignant as the original "SAW" movie (1). But then none of them have been since.

This has twists, turns, creative death designs, and a half decent plot. It's a bloody entertaining 90 minutes!

Quality horror, set within a challenging genre
17 August 2021
This film is SCARY. The suspense - the build: It's dark, and sinister, and troubling.

The evil orphan premise has been done to death; this premise offers a refreshing twist.

It parodies "Vivarium", but the story has a better build & context.

It also explores challenging issues like adoption, puberty, and child on child violence:a truly terrifying subject rarely ever broached in real life or film.

Graphics are decent. Not the best CGI, but certainly enough to be convincing and make you squirm where required.

I'm not really sure why this was slated so badly? It's the anti-superhero genre (which we're becoming familiar with) - but with a twist on that too. It's original. It's scary. It's dark. It's well acted. Give it a go!

Harrowing - brutal - well acted - beautiful
16 April 2021
I've never seen the original so I came at this film from a completely unbiased perspective. As such, I thought it was brilliant.

The two main characters manage to convey a unique, unshakable bond in spite of minimal dialogue between them.

Papillon's close encounters, but evasions of insanity are moving and relatable. WITHOUT going so far out that they become corny.

The central premise of the brutality of man stays with you long after the film is finished; and that's testament to the script and director because it is SO well displayed.

The suspense is knife edge throughout most of the film. Partly because Of the known risks, but also because we are so emotionally involved with Degas. This is testament to Malek's performance.

The inclusion of light and colour the island has offers adds a stark contrast to a lot of American prison flicks: it gives you HOPE. It's appealing to watch, but also reminds us they there is a beautiful world out there just itching to be enjoyed.

I know the original was a classic. I know it will be pretty much impossible to beat. But give this a go as a stand-alone movie with an open mind. It holds up!

You'll either love it or hate it
17 January 2021
This is a "Marmite" movie. If you're a fan of 80"s horror, you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS FILM. If you're not - you will not enjoy it.

It's like Hellraiser, The Thing and Rosemary's baby came together and made a phenomenal tribute to the classic 80's genre. But if you haven't seen or didn't enjoy those films - don't bother watching this.

I found this an utterly underrated triumph. I was terrified, bemused, and hugely entertained.

As a STAND ALONE series, it would have been good
7 July 2020
Forget the Penny Dreadful title. This has nothing to do with Gothic Horror, London, or the bleak literary melancholia associated with the Penny Dreadful original 19th century publications.

This shows primary flaw is the naming. Consider it as "City of Angels" as a stand alone show by the same producers as Penny Dreadful, and it holds up.

An extensive list of interconnected characters makes for intricate plot lines and a palpable build of tension.

The casting is solid. Strong performances by Dormer, Bishe, Kinnear, and Lane cover the plot holes and occasionally disingenuous writing.

Take it as a an American period thriller and it holds up. As a Penny Dreadful title; it fails
