Pachinko (2022)
Beautiful but my heart aches for the book
I managed to get to the first 5 minutes of episode 4 (iykyk) with keeping my mouth shut about how it's not like the book...but the book was my BEST reading experience of 2023 so I had really high hopes... I started with doubts because of the non-linear storytelling (I think it takes away from the most important teaching: how nobody is the main character in life and we all just try to live as we can) - but the present day story extensions, the filler characters and non-fitting past scenes took a lot away for me... it's beautiful, it's very well acted, it's just not the Pachinko I was hoping for.
The Alienist (2018)
I still loved it
As many before me said Sara did get a bit overpowering compared to the other two main characters - it is sad that the writing wasn't that perfect to keep them balanced all the way - but I have to say I still enjoyed every minute. I LOVE Dakota Fanning and the story was on point for me. I really hope they can and want to come up with something more for another season... I would be painful to leave them with only this.
Someone Great (2019)
Casual feelgood movie for me
Of course it wasn't anything groundbreaking but it just felt good. I think it's a great choice if you not-that-recently broke up too so you feel better already but still can use a little reassurance that life goes on.
Paradise Hills (2019)
Wasn't THAT bad...
It was a nicely shot vision with a story that might be okay for teens but as a boring Sunday afternoon lemonade I almost enjoyed it. It's almost like the "so silly it's cute" thing. Definitely better than the ratings.
Dead to Me (2019)
Amazing
I don't feel like I have to praise the story, I started watching without knowing anything about it and I guess it hit even better like that. But oh goooood the actors are so amazing. The ladies no question but hey James Marsden is the best. So versatile so great sooo underrated....
Anna (2019)
Don't know what everybodys problem is. This was fun :D
If you can get over the idiotic idea that a 40 kg woman can kill everybody (which only worked in Kill Bill I guess) it is a really fun no brainer movie. And all the actors - Murphy, Mirren, Evans - are amazing. The girl's okay too but her role is somewhat serious Mirren and Murphy are hilarious sometimes :D
Dark (2017)
Only wanted to practice my german, found the best series ever
This show is just amazing, uses just the right amount of characters and happenings so we can keep up with it but still blows our mind with every episode. I feel lucky I found it only now with 2 seasons already out (took me 3 days to binge) can't wait the new one.
Alex & Emma (2003)
Sweet lemonade
Not the biggest film ever made but it's sweet, makes me feel good and I like Kate and Luke acting together. Easy weekend adult fairytale.
Spinning Out (2020)
Sucks you in, spins you too
Okay first of all it's like Black Swan on ice with proper background... It had some "mandatory" cringy af moments and was predictable here and there aaaaand I don't know how realistic it is about the mental health topic but it was well built and I couldn't stop watching so I finished in a day. I love Kaya since Skins, January Jones is amazing and every other "main supporting" character was deeply writen and well played. Would 120% recomend. I wanted to see that full performance at the end too.
I Am Not Okay with This (2020)
Oh how familiar...
After the first few seconds I was like "it's Carrie" but I didn't think I'll be right. This is the teen-sitcomed version of the masters horror story (with some extra characters and other changes and the mandatory 2020 clichés of course). But it was pretty okay and binge-worthy (with the 7 episodes being like 20 mins each it's actually more like a looong movie) just not really new. Oh and the guy playing Stan was the most enjoyable to watch. I really hope the season closure won't be what it seems to be (would be too damn obvious and lame) but they can still pull it out with a smart idea that makes sense and isn't too random.
Marriage Story (2019)
Beautifully filmed raw human nature
I am not even close to getting married at the moment but if I get there this movie will be my guide of what not to do since the reasons this marriage got to an end are the things I'm afraid of happening to me too.
The movie itself is just as it has to be. It's simple, it's raw, it's beautiful. Everything is so human, so real you can feel it familiar yet everything the couple does and how human they are - just like us, watchers - makes you feel uncomfortable even about yourself. This film is heavy.
The actors are amazing I already adored both of them but they are just wow playing together.
It's the kind of movie I wanna watch over and over again because the actors and the filming are incredible yet I'm hesitating because I don't feel ready to get my emotions flipped over again soooooo I think this will be my new go to "I feel numb and wanna cry it out" movie.
Autumn in New York (2000)
last weak breath of the 90's romantic movie era
This is a typical "light" (as light as it's material lets it to be) romantic drama we already saw many times just with a slightly different but sadly not at all surprising ending...we could say it's kind of like the big sister to Sweet November. It aged a little badly, the dialogues are a bit sloppy and the plot is already in front of you from the very beginning but it's still worth watching once ...but pretty much that's it and it's really hard for me to say because I LOVE Winona Ryder and I like Richard Gere too (but with this movie I realised that his chemistry is much better with Julia Roberts).
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Not what I expected but still golden
Tarantino saw La La Land high and started writing this story. As others said the first 2 hours are surprisingly peaceful but beautifully shot and just when you forget you're watching a Tarantino the ending hits in. It hits in hard. I feel like I have to watch it again...and again...and again.
The Handmaid's Tale: Liars (2019)
This episode makes you it all worth it!!
It's where the pieces of the puzzle start to form the pattern. No words needed. Go and watch it!!! It's clearly catartic
Forrest Gump (1994)
Definition of a movie classic
I grew up on Tom Hanks movies and this one was my favorite. It's touching and teaches some real important and lasting things to ppl. Pretty sure I'll show it to my kids too.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Can't say why but I liked it
OK first of all this episode is waaaaaay too far from the Black Mirror standards that made us fans of the show. From that perspective it's bad. Really bad.
But tbh halfway into the episode I forgot I'm watching Black Mirror and like that I enjoyed it as hell. My inner teen was shook seeing Miley act again (I watched Hannah Montana in the early years but haven't seen anything else from her since so I'm only familiar with her music) and God it was enjoyable to watch her. Also the other two girls were familiar - the actress playing Rachel was Ryan Gosling's daughter in the Nice Guys movie which is one of my favorites and the other girl had a role in Sharp Objects. So the faces and acting (of these ladies, the other characters were barely even there or acted out terrible like that "supposed to be busy with work to forget" Dad or the Auntie Manager...ugh) made it really loveable for me. Sure the story is too far fetched and is on a level of an idealised Disney movie but it was great to see it once.
Stranger Things (2016)
My favorite thing on Earth at the moment
This is a quality show. The first season was amazing with the whole "new" concept of using oldschool vibes mixed with a great story having kids in the center. It was entertaining and I just fell in love with all the characters. I know the second season didn't get that warm welcome but I still loved it (even that weird 8th episode) and how the kids grew with their characters. And I swear waiting two years for this third season worth every second because it was a real masterpiece. 8 episodes full of action, not a single filler scene, they let the kids turn into teens the right way, did not forget about minor characters...even the new ones like Robin were pretty loveable. I just finished it and I'm in shock. They changed character arcs and let some space to drama I cried my eyes out at the end (and surpsizingly I did it for the guy I liked the least...)
SPOILER:
The only thing I don't like that much is that they teared Mike and El apart again... also Nancy and Jonathan (why? aren't they supposed to start university?) I mean I understand that they needed to do this so they can bring the action out of Hawkings for the next season but it's still so sad.
Black Mirror: Striking Vipers (2019)
Wanted to be deep but it's only a puddle
The main problem is that Black Mirror used to show us how the seemingly ideal technology could poison our lives and....we already saw this virtual game story going one way, now we just got another. This is more character drama than technology issues and not everybody can reflect on it. On the other side it's writing isn't the best. It's too slow, too predictable so too boring. Characters have no dept, you can't feel their lives really treathened by this new experience the men have and the ending doesn't feel either good or bad enough. I mean if I were somebody around 40 with a nicely built, functioning life, family I love and all and had this experience/ had to accept my partner having an experience I would've been waaaay more freaked out. Giving each other a night out is no solution. Not episode writing nor relationship-wise.
Black Mirror: Metalhead (2017)
A great idea so hidden it's almost lost.
This was probably the shortest episode jet it felt the longest. The black and white theme made it too one dimensional for me and I kept on loosing interest and had to force myselt to stay with the "story". (A very very faded, mossy-green color palette would've been better.)
If we see the "story" - how feelings can take you into doing stupid things - like an impossible expedition for a teddy bear ending with the death of all three members - or can keep you going - as the lady survived almost 'til the end - is definitely an interesting topic. So it would be okay - but I feel they forgot to put it into the 40 minute long empty chasing, so they snitched it to the episode with the last shot and two radio-chat scenes that still feel so one-sided it's hard to feel the weight of the situation. There is one thing blurring out the edges of the story in a ballad and there's this episode that kinda forgot it's own meaning. Also there are movies where the lack of characters and places create something amazing, and this episode that makes me feel like the staff ran out of money but still had to create something because they promised 7 episodes so they took three actors, a half-done script and made this.
Black Mirror: Hang the DJ (2017)
A warm hug for your soul you weren't waiting
First of all the base idea reminds me to the Matt Damon - Emily Blunt movie "Adjustment Bureau" and as we already kinda got used to the cruel twists Black Mirror can take, so I was sitting on the edge of the chair waiting for the moment when the whole thing will flip around...and it didn't came. This episode had such a nice tone from start to finish and the actors were so loveable... I love Joe Cole's acting. He was a real a**hole in Skins, a badass in Peaky Blinders and now he was just sooo adorable.
Also while this episode seemed pretty calm and had a happily ever after ending, the main theme is very very important and makes you wonder about your relationships you had.
Alltogether it was sweet, it was simple and still managed to touch my soul and make me wonder all night.
Little Italy (2018)
Story told 1000 times, now in extremely whitewashed edition
Another Romeo & Juliet with a happy ending and an asian caracter acting like italian among americans doing the same but thinking that's normal. Also I can't imagine Emma Roberts being a master chef because having an effective cutting technique won't turn you into one.)
Only if you can't find anything better for a lonely movie night and wanna turn off your brain for an hour.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Enjoyable fairytale
Don't really understand all the negative reviews...this is a family movie. from Disney. (slightly) based on a story that has been adapted in a million ways. (and who says it's not worthy compared to the original ballet I'd recomend seeing the Barbie version of every classical piece :D )
It is a movie meant to be visually attractive and it is. The story is a bit simple - you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out halfway into the movie but I still really like this version with the added element of "the sweet thing being rotten inside" and also Keira Knightley was hilarious as this sugar-shock b***h...she should play negative characters more often.
My only problem is probably that they cut the end too short and left it a bit flat without any real climax.
But on the other hand again I liked how they made Clara a mini-engineer. Girls can be good at that too. :D
It's clearly no masterpiece and probably no one will remember this by next Christmas but it was completely enjoyable for once.
