Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Waste of talent
Monstrously boring. Oh my word. This is dire. Great actors being made to deliver this drivel. What a huge missed opportunity. So very, very boring. It feels like some amateur student show at a fringe theatre. Given the talent and budget - awful. What a waste of such talent.
The plot line is all over the place. You have no idea what is happening and then when you do you don't care. The critics say this is Disney being greedy - but I would argue if they were they were being greedy, they would have put some effort in to it. This is so dull and so boring - but crucially - a waste of talent. Amazing actors being made to make this rubbish into gold. Why betray actors like this with dross like this? Shame on the makers.
Cinderella (2021)
Enjoy it for what it is
This isn't Cinderella. This isn't the usual fairy tale. It's a pastiche. It's a joke. It's a 'have fun' film. If you see it for what it is - you will enjoy it.
If you don't like the fact that people who aren't white are actually part of European history or you hate the fact the fairy godmother is briefly a gay guy - you'll hate this. If you are happy to enjoy the story with some entertaining digs at the patriarchy - then you'll have fun. Just enjoy it. It's a fun. Pantomime. It's Cinderella as it should be. Silly and fun - with brilliant performances from the entire cast!
P. S. Loved the new look town crier!
Also - look at the gorgeous places it was filmed.
Death to 2020 (2020)
As enjoyable as 2020
The same old boring, depressing stuff. No original ideas, lame humour. With everything 2020 had to offer a comedy script writer - this is what they came up with. Truly, had high hopes given the calibre of talent, but it was dull, unfunny and just miserable. The writing was so lazy it could send you to sleep. Boring, predictable and amateur. In that sense, it was peak 2020. Seriously, why not try and cheer us up rather than continue to depress us?
Brass (1983)
Unique
A wonderful satire. Brass manages to take pot shots at every aspect of popular culture and human hypocrisy. A glorious tongue in cheek romp that pokes fun and parodies with delicious precision. I remember watching it when it first aired and oddly, it's lost none of its fizz since then! Sit back, relax and enjoy.
The Stranger (2020)
Another Netflix failure
Once again, here we go. A thoroughly nonsensical journey of absurd pointlessness. Nothing is believable. Nothing is real. You lose interest in a heart beat. Are Netflix compelled to film any script that passes their desk? Seriously. Don't waste your time.
This Way Up (2019)
How dit it get commissioned?
Formulaic London angst 'comedy.' The usual characters. The usual dilemmas and sagas. The same dystopian landscapes. It feels like a second rate This Life without any relatable or endearing characters. Had hoped the mental illness angle would be explored with sensitivity - but it's just clumsily handled. Frankly, a bit sad and miserable.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Beautiful but dull
Too long, too much unnecessary narrative, a heavy reliance on CGI and the undeniable reality that this is merely setting up a better film yet to come. A desperately sad missed opportunity. Too much effort went into creating something beautiful, over something interesting. Dull.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Here they go again...
What is this? Surely no one watches this and wonders what will happen. Surely no one can think that ten, seemingly endless, hours to the inevitable conclusion is worth it.
Netflix seem to want to corner the dystopian pay per view market. The endlessly miserable, dark, hopeless and joyless output they deliver up really begs the question - do they feel joy over at Netflix HQ? Are they capable of love? Is this their world view?
Some good performances, some tedious cliched performances. Some good music, some awful music. Needlessly cumbersome script. Some eye-catching cinematography - but almost always gloomy. Natch.
The end couldn't come soon enough - although, we're left with the chilling realisation that there will probably be a second season. Now that is depressing.
Sex Education (2019)
Grease meets Inbetweeners
Yes, it's a sixth form. Yes, not all sixth forms wear uniforms. Yes, it's filmed in UK - but what on earth is with the attempt to fuse the imagery of two educational establishments? I kept expecting to see posters for an Enchantment Under The Sea dance. Even the way they are all hanging out of the back of their open topped cars with all of the distinct school iconography is exclusively American. I expect Rizzo and Danny to walk past furtively talking about Sandy.
One assumes that they want to ensure this is watched in America too, so they homogenise the cultural identities. Does that distract from the series or is it just an irritation? For me - it got in the way of the script more than once.
Whilst the characters are extremely predictable, the performances are ok and the script is sharp. Which is a shame, because done well, this would be a genuine contender. It'll be forgotten soon enough. For me it demonstrates that hits like The Crown aside, Netflix has a lot of money but little class.
Lost in Space (2018)
Green Screen Tedium
If the objective was the fling a basket of cliches in the air and hope that the random landing pattern would produce something original - they were mistaken. It's every dull, predictable scenario that has already been done to death but with a bigger budget green screen.as for the main family... it feels like they're a room full of actors auditioning for a chewing gum commercial whilst being told to take a pop at being a family.
Increasingly you begin to hope that luck will turn and these people will meet their maker and put the viewer out of their misery.
Can Netflix not make anything decent? Big budget nonsense.
