Heartland (2007)
I really like
The beautiful scenery.
Currently in season 7, so I've seen filming locations throughout all seasons, and it's truly beautiful.
Honestly though, I'm watching for the horses, not the soap opera style drama dynamics of the characters' relationships. Any scene longer than 2 or 3 seconds with Tim in it is painful to watch. His character is narcissistic, whiney, manipulative, belligerent, shallow, conniving and all around loathsome.
Peter is boring, fake, selfish, and shallow.
Lou and Caleb come off as emotionally immature, but are decent supporting characters.
Jack is my favorite character, and even he has bursts of overly dramatic emotion. The back and forth issues with Amy and Ty got really pathetic at times- way too much exaggerated jealousy and insecurity.
It is absolutely worth watching, and I'm going to continue, but I have no expectation of the flaws getting better.
Walker: Independence (2022)
So far it's ok
Hoyt Rawlins is my favorite character so far. Which makes sense, because the same actor playing the same character in a storyline that takes place more than 150 years after this one is also a favorite character of mine....
I'm getting the real sense that Jared Padalecki is incapable of moving on from Supernatural- using his connections from that to get former co-stars (who actually CAN act) involved in his current projects. Walker casting Jake Abel -Adam, Mitch Pileggi -Samuel Campbell, Genevieve Padalecki -Ruby, and a stand-in for Miles by Jensen Ackles. Then Mark Sheppard -Crowley as Hagan in Walker Independence... and Padalecki himself appearing (or rumored to be doing so- I haven't seen that yet) in a show that takes place 150+years before....
I'm not loving it.
Walker (2021)
It's good...
I'm really enjoying the storylines, and for the most part the acting is decent. I like the family dynamic that this brought in, even though the show has more of a soap opera feel than I was expecting. I love the casting for Bon, Abby, August, Stella, and Miki. (Not so much for Emily, I think its cheesy and unimaginative to cast married people as married people) I was a huge fan of Walker: Texas Ranger, and was super excited when I found out there was going to be a reboot. But you can't reboot Chuck Norris. Other than the stuttering, I feel like I'm watching Sam Winchester pretend to be someone else.
Bel-Air (2022)
Why so many haters?
Don't get me wrong, I loved the OG Fresh Prince- the show was quirky, funny, heartfelt, and touched on many real world issues. But it was also hokey, forced, and skimmed the surface of so many deeper issues in a way that could be seen as trivializing.
This telling of the story is darker, deeper and more complex. Each of these characters has their own story and motivations, so they come off as people in their own right instead of simply being there to prop up the (title/main) character of Will.
BelAir is more of a drama than Fresh Prince, but I'm grateful for it. Had this been a modernized remake of the same old thing, I would've quit watching after the first episode.
What Maisie Knew (2012)
Wow
I decided to watch it because I'll watch ANYTHING with Alexander Skarsgard. But this movie blew me away. I very quickly found myself rooting for Margo and Lincoln to take Maisie and run away, and though that's not quite what happens, It was good to see that little girl being loved instead of continuing to be used as a weapon by her toxic parents.
The Darkest Minds (2018)
Should have been so much better!
Having finished the book 3 days ago, I thought I'd finally watch the movie. Thin Soup. They took out everything that gave the story flavor, texture and nutrients.
My Perfect Landing (2020)
Came across this by happy accident
I was looking for something new to watch with the girls I babysit, and stumbled across this little gem. Within the first 3 minutes of episode one, both girls (5& addicted to gymnastics, and 2) were sitting down quietly.
I can't say the acting is masterful, but the storyline is cute and believable. The gymnastics are beautifully done, and the show is keeping the girls interested while not being so juvenile that an adult can't enjoy it as well. We've only watched 2 episodes, but are already hoping there will be a season 2!
Down a Dark Hall (2018)
I waited
Until now to watch this movie, hoping that the bad reviews I'd read were somehow wrong. They were not, sadly.
Lois Duncan's book was phenomenal- suspenseful, subtle, classy and tinged with that spine-chill fright that gives you goosebumps and make you shudder. When I heard they were making a movie based on that book, I got excited. This was just.....sad.
Gotham (2014)
IF
If you can put everything you know of Batman, AND all of the villains out of mind, it's a great show. The acting is very good, filming is done well, and the characters really come to life as they are written. They're not written the way the characters were originally though, so it's been tough for me.
I enjoy watching Gotham. But I'm not sure my family enjoys how often I say "That's not right."
Daughter of the Streets (1990)
daughter of the streets.... powerful message.
Some people may consider this to contain a spoiler.
Author: George Parker from Orange County, CA USA was obviously not paying attention when he commented on this movie. Charley is not oh so perfect, and her mother is far from it. True that Charley wanted to help her brother, and she did have some anger and resentment issues to work out between her and her mother, but she did not "turn bad." She became caught up in the need to do Something. Her life spiraled out of control, and she let her emotions take over. This movie contains a powerful message, and although it is geared for teens, I feel that even as an adult it has value. It has a lot of character development, and I found myself empathizing with both Charley and her mother.
