Thirteen (2003)
Painful...beautiful...
I was a little bit skeptical before watching this, as I am 16 and a lot of my friends love this film. Usually when something is so popular I am deterred from it, as I don't like to follow the norm. However. I was also intrigued by the fact that it was written and based on the true story of and by the girl who plays the main character's best friend, Nikki Reed. I just had to see what it was all about. At first glance, the movie might seem to lack depth and just be pretentious. But as you delve deeper into it you may find subtle cues and that genuine feel of life. Hard to explain. But it is a harsh, bitter, and broad portrait of a teenage girl's fall from grace. Entertaining as it is a work of art. Not just another movie on the shelf. But you can judge for yourself.
Do I Love You? (2002)
Interesting commentary on life
It's hard to say all that much about this movie without giving it away.. But there are a few things I can say about it. Initially I had mixed feelings about it..but continue to watch it because it is fascinating. It's basically about a woman who is struggling with her own identity and her life and relationships with people and the world around her. It certainly passes my standards for good lesbian film noir that isn't just raunchy and raw; it isn't like pornography. It's a real movie with real characters who have real feelings. Very 3-dimensional. I can say altogether that I really enjoyed this film. I identified very much with the main character, and it left me with a sense of...reality but at the same time pondering beautiful and odd things. It's hard to explain. You'll see when you watch it. Enjoy.
When Night Is Falling (1995)
Romantic, but not overly so. Engaging.
This is one of the greatest movies I've seen. It's not just because of it's great writing and wonderful ability to blend all it's elements together seamlessly.
It's not geared towards mainstream audiences. And that's definitely a good thing.
It stays truly entertaining without sacrificing any of it's 'intergrity' and, quite frankly, if it was made any differently, I wouldn't like it half as much.
You would have to watch it to know what I mean, so I won't spoil anything. It's a masterpiece. Enjoy.
