Movies to fall asleep to
9 April 2024
I knew Scorcese was about due for a flop. Overly long (3 and a half hours) and uninteresting ( just like Oppenheimer). But this is what films are now - dull, talky and pointless. It just went on and on and on until you arrive at an unnecessary speech by the director himself. Good grief. It wouldve been nice to see what happened to Deniro and Leonardos characters. Did they go to jail? Get hung? No, we get a sad little story by Scorcese at the end. It was almost like a bunch of libs paid him to make this film lol

Compare this to The Irishman & Wolf of Wall Street -2 films with about the same running time but INTERESTING and faster paced. Stay away from any movie those beanie wearers at Rotten Tomatoes love and rate high.

If you like nothing but 3 hours of yapping this one is for you
17 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Good grief this movie was absolutely boring. Typical of anything since 2020. How this won awards is beyond me. Oh, because a certain director & actor was attached.

And an award for robert downey jr? Really?? He should've won for CHAPLIN, not this!

The B movie film with Paul Newman was way more entertaining.

Also, the nudity was absolutely unnecessary.

For a film that was supposed to be about the bomb it should've been linear and maybe even shown the indianopolis delivering it and the bombers dropping it. That wouldve helped.

Was there an accident? I know it couldn't have gone all as planned.

But yet we are supposed to feel guilt in dropping it.

Toss this into the bargain bin tub!

Slower paced, too talky but still a decent film
13 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A) I dont know why the felt necessary to stretch out what was shown in the original DUNE 1984 into a 2 part, 7-8 hour saga. Oh, wait. I DO know - MONEY! So, this thing is going to be milked to the very last drop.

B) For a revenge film, they couldve added more action or battle scenes but instead the film chooses to talk.

C) The Baron from DUNE 1984 blows this one away and so did the original emperor played by José Ferrer ( he LOOKED more like an emperor, Walken looks like he wandered in from the Ben Hur film stage) Then again all of Lynchs actors had character & style.

D) The film, again, has its great visuals although the ending seemed rushed. - the final battle was over in about a minute.

E) Zendaya is the stand out for me - I am no fan whatsoever of her and I thought she was just gonna drag the movie down as the love interest. She plays a really solid freman.

So, overall is it a good movie? Yes, compared to the garbage that has been put out since 2020. Would I pay to see it in the theater? Yes, at almost 3 hours you'll get your moneys worth.

Overlong. Drawn out & not better than the original
16 January 2024
First of all, if you're going to do a remake, improve or add something new to it. Secondly, the crash was subpar with all the resources they have today (CGI, etc) - the original was more dramatic. Third, why 2 and a half hours??

No one stands out here. In the original you knew who was who.

The only bright side was that the film gave you who died , how old and on what date.

This is an average film that was a total letdown in what could have been a more informative feature with all thats come out now since that tragic event. See the original film ALIVE. Save your time.

99.9% of films that have come out since 2020 have been terrible.

Good Movie but John Williams score could've been better
6 July 2023
Being the last entry into the series, they (in particular John Williams) should've revisited the original film and refreshed their memories about what made Raiders so great. A huge part of that was Indy's theme, the love theme & the mystical end score of the old guy wheeling the Ark into the museum as the camera pulls back. This was really lacking. I hardly heard the rousing horns that gave the original the sense of adventure & excitement. Overall, good film but Williams dropped the ball here. Not one of his best scores.

I liked the fact the film doesnt stay in one place for too long - it goes from the past to the present, overseas, under water, into caves and to the past again.

Straight out of Left Field from DePalma
1 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Director Brian DePalma did some nice, little small films mostly in the fashion of Alfred Hitchcock - mystery thrillers & horror even using Hitches soundtrack conductor Bernard Herman in some of them. He was also known for his great Orson Welles like camera angles & cinematography.

But this film here - about the rise and fall of gangster Tony Montana - is absolute peak DePalma but in epic form.

This is his most absolute perfect film. The music (by Giorgio Moroder), the acting (from bottom to top), the story (by Oliver Stone) right down to the beautiful colors representing Miami.

This was a film ahead of it's time for 1983. Violent & full of foul language - so 'bad',uis kids weren't allowed to see in theaters when it came out.

But once I saw it on late night cable shortly after it was out of the theaters, I was blown away - especially by the exciting climactic ending.

It's a long but fast paced film that will keep you into it even after you've seen it 100 times.

terribly uninteresting
12 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A slow beginning but then, at the pool party with all it's whos who of retro celebs you think its finally gonna hit its stride - but doesn't.

Going into it, I already knew it wasn't an actual biopic. It was kind of neat how they portrayed him as the typical rise and fall rock star of old like Jim Morrison.

Some of the humor is forced and not very funny. The only parts I found funny were the bits of Weird Als actual songs.

So, if you grew up with Al, watch it for that It's worth a look but nothing amazing.

Why does imdb make it mandatory to write a 6 page essay for a film review? Why can't we just keep it short and simple? Personally, I don't want to read a long winded, highly detailed opinion.

These people can not make a good film these days
2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You have her life story.

You're given the green light for an almost 3 hour film.

And what do you do with it?

You give the audience a lousy, fictional and boring 2 and a half hours of nothing with a director thinking he's some kind of David Lynch.

The cast was there and the film looks good visually but it looks like it was basically a rough draft of a movie.

It would have been nice to have dates, names of places, situations etc.to help the film along and anyone new to Marilyn.

Also, there was absolutely no need for the unnecessary sex scenes - especially with JFK.

But you can expect that from the creeps at Netflix - they made sure that was in there alright.

Terrible.

Good film with some minor disappointments
2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok. We all know it's hard for any director to cram an entire career of such an entertainer into a 21/2 hour movie. That being said, overall , it was better than expected. (I was dreading the fact that rap music would be heard all throughout it)

What I did not like was:

How they made his mother seem like an angry drunk. I've always known her as the sweet and worrisome mother.

They skipped right on through Love Me Tender (the film) and pretended Elvis didn't start his movie career until AFTER the Army.

They skipped the Ed Sullivan seal of approval.

Is that really how Elvis fired the Colonel? During a live performance?? That doesn't sound like Elvis at all.

I also don't ever recall a riot breaking out at an Elvis concert.

The abrupt ending.

A good, different type of WW2 thriller with a great cast
22 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
All the old school actors are here: John Cassavettes, George Kennedy, Peter Vaughn, Edward Herman, Max Von Sydow & Patrick Mcgoohan.

Featuring an investigation into the robbery of a train full of German Reichsmarks involving characters like George S Patton & Lucky Lucianno.

Much more interesting than most films put out these days (2020 and on).

You won't be disappointed if you like the older WW2 films and actors.

If you liked the Wild Geese, you'll like this!
16 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Rod Taylor, Jim Brown (in his second best film), Kenneth More... mercenaries.... war... the Congo. What a nice little action film from the late 60's where film making was beginning to shed the hokieness and starting to turn more realistic, dark and violent. A great job overall from the interesting credits to the fast paced direction and Ennio Morricone like soundtrack. It also has a Nazi influence in it led by one of the old stand boys Peter Calrsten (from Zeppelin). Two thumbs up!

Could've been so much better
21 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We have a historical bio about a mail bomber so lazily put together. Is any of this even chronological? There are no dates or times to help the viewer follow along. Instead, we get the main actor in the wilderness narrating, upset at jets, machinery and helicopters. Once in awhile he's building a bomb, working a job and dropping a package off at a mailbox. That's it. Finally, after about an hour, you'll wake up because one goes off in an office.

Excellent Prequel
9 February 2022
You don't need to see the 1st installment to enjoy this action/thriller. If you like spy films mixed with a little history, World War 1 & historical characters, this will be right up your alley.

All the actors do a fine job with their interesting roles and it's good to see Ralph Fiennes back in a quality leading role - not as good as Schindler's List (which is hard to top) but better than the token role he was thrown in the recent Bond films.

This Craig series has possibly the worst villains
10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Overall, it is worth a watch if you like James Bond. It's also better than any of the terrible Pierce Brosnan/Timothy Dalton versions.

That being said, I've never seen such great actors hired to play such weak villains.

Waltz as Blofield was great when you first see him at the conference table. After that, he's just this little man playing dentist. Totally wasted.

Remi Malek, who demanded not to be portrayed as a middle eastern terrorist, was such a let down also.

We waited 2 years for this and he's probably on screen for maybe 20 minutes? He's not threatening or memorable either.

What begins as a promising film goes on for too long.

I like that they always somehow seem to make the theme song sound classic bondish.

Hans Zimmer also incorporates some of the old school music into the score from On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

There's a twist here from that film. Instead of the wife dying, Bond ultimately meets his end.

Which was supposed to happen in Roger Moores last outing.

Amazing Cast - One of Connerys Better Efforts
10 November 2020
A man who's been behind bars for 10 years gathers old pals to pull off a heist - but he's just a little behind the the times. Alan King, Ralph Meeker, Christopher Walken and a few other very familiar faces of 70's cinema and an interesting story makes this with watching. 2 other points of interest: it is absolutely a breath of fresh and funny air to see Martin Balsam play a flamboyantly gay man and it's amazing to see Walken hold his own vs Connery - imagine your very first role in a major film and they put you up against a legend like Bond. Dyans Cannons is the eye candy of the film. Enjoy!

Impressive. Robert Forster goes out on a high note!
15 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
You take a huge chance on wasting yo ur time with films wasting your time these days. I was really hesitant to sit and watch this. 2 reasons I did: I like Robert Forster and it's about werewolves. It has its faults ( the comedy aspect) but the music, acting, cinematography, location & story are all good. The running time is short at an hour and 24 minutes but that's also a plus being that there's little filler and lull. The ending was a pretty good twist but kinda taken from Manhunter by Micheal Mann with the villain bearing a creepy resemblance to Tom Noonans character.

Too. Much. Dialogue.
16 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It would've been interesting to see the creep have more interaction with the public to show his oddities and quirkinesses. Instead, this film focuses too much on yapping. Once it is known that the VHS pal has influence over the loner, the audience is aware but the filmmaker prolonged the notion. The minute he finally meets a match is a relief. You get to see his reactions. But then it goes back to more yapping. The only and best action comes at the very end of the film - way too late! Could've been so much better!

Such an underrated classic
8 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Let's start with the all star cast - Andy Garcia, Christopher Loyd, William Forsythe, Bill Nunn, Christopher Walken, treat Williams, Steve Buscemi & old school actor Jack Warden among others. The story is about Jimmy the Saint doing one last job for his former employer The Man with the Plan. The plan goes wrong and they are all sought out by hired assassin Mr Shoosh. In between scenes we are shown last testaments and advice of dying people. The real "treat" of this film is the superb acting of Treat Williams who plays a completely psychotic ex con. Amazing stuff!

Tense film, better than expected but has 2 major flaws
11 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you like End of Watch, Sicario & Borderland etc you'll enjoy this movie about treacherous & villainous Mexican drug gangs & ganglords. The 2 leads were very good. The film starts off tense due to the fact that anyone these 2 "collectors" encounter could pop off at anytime. Also, the special appearance by the black gang leader from End of Watch was a neat surprise. I have 2 problems with this film: 1) The quickness in which George Lopezs character is killed - in a scene where he tells his son he's headed out to deal with the rival gang leader, a female comes in literally 2 seconds later telling his son hes been captured and to meet with the rival gang leader who has his severed head already in a cooler. 2) the wimpy way Shia 's bad boy character & his crew went out - they didn't even put up a fight! He seemed to me like someone who would never be taken alive yet the screenwriters did the opposite - without a fight. smh

Poor William Holden that passed on the original film
30 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Let me be clear- I'm a huge fan of both Peck & Holden. Seen most of their films. But here, in the sequel, Bill doesn't hold a candle to Greg in this series. And sometimes when actors pass on a script it's for the better. Peck was still healthy and his usual stern self - perfect casting as an ambassador. William Holden just looks so weary and prematurely Aged - due to his heavy drinking (they were only 1 year apart in age!). It's amazing that he was once very handsome leading man - look at the romantic beach scenes of Bridge on the River Kwai. As for the film, we have mr 70's perm him self Robert Foxworth, Alien film star Bishop (Lance Henrickson), a star of the silver screen as Aunt Marion, the 3 headed monster from Godzilla, Melissa Joan Hart as the crazy prophet of doom & the gay, black gay from Mannequin. Holden doesn't really do much in this film except be there just to be ...William Holden whereas Peck was thoroughly involved eventually with what was going on with his 'son'. The death scenes are good especially Guggenheimens. Other than that, it is just ok

Possibly Rod Steigers Worst Performance
15 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's 2020 and it's the very first time I've seen this film. One thing that stuck out was Rod Steigers acting. It seems like he's not even trying. He lost his punch. Usually he hams it up with a lot of feeling. Compare this to his part in The Amityville Horror. In both films he plays a priest. In the former, he acts with urgency and heart as he tries to save a family from their demise. In the latter, it's supposedly the end of the world yet he's highly ho hum about it. As for the rest of the film, it's just ok. The villain could've been made to be more scary instead of suave - maybe less dialogue and some slow motion walking through crowds to some eerie Background music.

With the amount of familiar faces in it, it could've been great!
1 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've seen both the original years ago and now the 2020 encore version. I can see why it failed. The general public probably assumed because of the gangster vibe and with Coppola directing, it was gonna be another Godfather like film. Unfortunately, it can not decide what it wants to be. It goes back and forth between Cotton Club performances and the storyline of Dutch Schultz. He should either have made a film about the club itself and rich history of performers or just went all out gangster film with the Cotton Club as the backdrop - which is more interesting - less about Gregory Hines problems. Even the great John Barry's score is not so great. Watched it as a kid when it came out and now as an adult and it's still ok at best.

An Tip of the Hat to Classic 1930's Horror
19 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing this as a teen in the 90's(?). Having never seen anything older, I thought it was just OK. Watching it now, after exploring films throughout the years, I can see what they were aiming for. This is an homage to the early days of black and white horror - when most people back then we're scared of anything - The Invisible Man, The Phantom of the Opera, Doctor X, Dracula etc. lol. In this case, it reminded me of Vincent Prices classic House of Wax - the style of the opening credits and Whirling soundtrack. The film is fast paced and features a very young Francis Mcdormand and still up and coming Liam Neeson. The villain, played by Larry Drake, is a great surprise. Shout Factory, once again, did an amazing job or restoration. So Upon further review, I give this film a 6.5.

What an annoying film that tries to be The Shining
28 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I read before watching that the psycho girl had a 'dark past'. Ok. What was it? All we know is that she's the typical girl of the 2000's that relies on pills to get her through the day. That's it. It's quite a shame because it could've been better. But yet, at the end, we don't know all the answers. Why is she on pills? Did the kids hide all the food? What's with the religious nonsense? And did she kill the kids? It ends in black screen. No conclusion. I did like the fact they showed The Thing on tv and it gave me a little confidence to keep watching. Unfortunately, it just wasn't good enough. It was just ok.

Classic late night cable tv entertainment
27 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was born the year this film came out (72). As a kid I remember seeing the end scene of Scott Floundering on the ground as his death slowly happened. Thanks to Warner Archives, I've now seen it as an adult and can tell you it's another gem for Scott's resume. It's also directed by him - including wtf slow motion spitting and coffee cup emptying. Also, why is he wearing thick eyebrows?? He shouts a cat with a what looks like a long barreled German Luger LoL. Why is everyone wearing thick, dark brimmed Buddy Holly glasses?? This film is worth watching for all of its quirkiness alone. It's basically a revenge drama about a father going agonist the government after his son is killed by an accidental poisonous pesticide. Martin Sheen also stars. Classic 70's stuff.
