Spenser: For Hire: Hell Hath No Fury (1986)
Very ABC Melodrama
I liked Robert Urich in Vegas, but this show is so cheesy 80's, it's a little annoying. The narration was a Magnum thing, so not really liking that part. Women need to be saved and throw themselves at Spenser for either gratitude or vulnerability, very ABC back in the day. This is the second time this season that Spenser has kissed a woman, without telling his girlfriend. And this reporter character doesn't even seem apologetic to her friend Suz. She just lamented on how sad it is to be 39, and nearly losing her job. And Susan is so understanding, doesn't even bat an eyelash. Lame.. I like how Hawk is more of a loner, and doesn't need all this melodrama, but i'll get through the short series, and look forward to A Man Called Hawk.... 40 years later...
Monster: Silenced (2022)
Hauntingly Beautiful
I've always been highly interested in studying serial killers. Jack the Ripper, HH Holmes seemed like historical period pieces. Bundy, the Hillside Strangler, still seemed like surreal horror movies. But Dahmer was pretty much the first notorious serial killer of my generation. Someone who can commit such heinous crimes left me wary of who i encounter, who i can trust. Even watching these episodes after all these years leaves me feeling the same fear of the human psyche.
This series is one of the best limited series i can recall since Mildred Pierce. And this episode is by far the best I've seen of this series (although i have 4 more to go). The directing, acting, dialogue was superb. The interaction of the deaf actors without any sound brings you into their world. What stood out the most was seeing that world in their eyes. Even though Tony couldn't hear Jeffrey when he got angry over the board game rules, he can see it in his eyes. As i said this was during my late teen, young adult years that Dahmer made this impact on the community. The music, fashion (Button Your Fly T-shirt), & dancing were all things that were around at the time. As i can sing along to the lyrics, back when clubs played good music. This episodes accuracy brought me back to a different world.
Also what made this the most moving episode was the idea that Jeffrey was somewhat in a normal relationship with someone he can trust, someone to go on dates with, & didn't have to drug. I didn't know the backstory from the beginning if he let Tony live because he was an actual friend. But of course that fear of someone leaving Jeffrey is what led to Tony's demise. The character of Tony was portrayed so beautifully. It was heart breaking when he was ditched by a guy at the club when he couldn't communicate with him. And even more heartbreaking that Tony finally found someone, but it was the devil himself.
I do like the gore and horror of these serial killer tellings, but this stood for reasons people have praised, the directing, acting, writing. But for me this was a humanistic character study, the psychological aspect of someone so damaged as Dahmer to possibly attain happiness is just fascinating & haunting. I remember watching people who knew Dahmer on Oprah talk about how homophobia & people's cruelty does have an affect on how someone turns out. It doesn't excuse what Dahmer did, but it's understandable that people are broken for a reason, but why they act so violently, especially to people they care about like Tony, is the curious, sad, vicious cycle of Dahmer's psyche.
Atomic Blonde (2017)
BLONDES HAVE FUN KICKING ASS
I probably wouldn't like this movie if Charlize wasn't in it. She's like a walking fashion layout, from every angle of her face, her smoldering eyes, to the stylish outfits she wore. Nobody does it hotter! The movie has probably the best fight scenes i've ever seen a woman do, that didn't involve high wires, or fancy special effects or CG. Some other great hand to hand combat chick scenes are Kill Bill, Haywire, Salt. But Atomic Blonde has to be the best. That stairway fight scene was nicely directed, no music, just raw fighting..pretty awesome.
Some people may not be into it because of the endless music, the plot, or whatever. Maybe it's too stylized European for the average Joe. Music in every scene might be some sort of the trend as someone mentioned in Guradians of the Galaxy (i haven't seen it). I did see Baby Driver, & it seems to work. Granted the music was good in that movie, as well as Atomic Blonde. Some people were confused by the plot. Charlize is looking for a list of double agents- that's it! If you didn't get the ending, then this movie is definitely not for you.
But i'm hoping for a sequel!
Me, Myself and I (2017)
David AND GOLIATH
To be honest, i've only seen the pilot episode. It was very sweet, charming, everything that CBS prides itself in romantic comedies (Too bad Big Bang went that way). Anyway, i was drawn to it purely for John Larroquette who is one of the greatest television actors.. i mean Night Court!! Nobody else can do the things he did, and be pure comic genius, and be vulgar, sexy, and wanting more and more of his presence because he's too damn good! I couldn't continue the show because how inaccurate biologically it is! John Larroquette is 6'4, Bobby Moynihan (miss him on SNL) is 5'7, and they look nothing alike in present time anyway! That reason for being turned off the show might be trivial, but hey so am i...
