Great Movie
20 November 2023
It gets straight to the point. There are no useless subplots neither does it tries to preach anything.

The scares are nice. They did end up putting a lot of them in the trailer which I wish wasn't the case. So, watching trailer will spoil a good number of moments for you.

The length of the movie also seemed daunting, but they did not stretch anything out. It felt just fine.

The acting is good. Everybody played their part well. Music is also creepy and goes well with the whole ambience of the movie. The effects are good as well and do not look cheap.

The plot I was afraid might lose steam but it kept strong. There is also this really nice confrontational scene towards the end.

The film was good enough to make me write a review about it.

The Voyeurs (2021)

Starts bad, then gets interesting and downright crazy by the end. Yet worth it.
16 September 2021
The beginning is kinda off-putting. Both the dialogue and dialogue delivery makes you cringe. Especially the black guy. His voice just felt unpleasant. The story is titillating so I kept going.

It all gets better down the line.

The acting - by both the main lead - becomes watchable. Dialogues wouldn't make you cringe anymore neither will the delivery. Everyone acts decent. The story picks up the pace.

The plot isn't nonsensical, their way of eavesdropping is actually possible but I'm not so sure about the bluetooth thing that happens afterwards.

Then their is the scene where Sydney Sweeney - after teasing right from the very beginning - bares it all and oh boy you wouldn't be disappointed. They don't cut it short it keeps going for ample amount of time.

I watched this movie only because she was in it.

It all gets twisted in the third act. It reminded me of "The Perfection" which is even more twisted than this movie.

Anyway, it gets ahold of your attention and doesn't let go. The ending might be too much for some but it was fine by me and I had a good time watching this flick.

If nothing else then watch it for Sydney Sweeney. That girl is gorgeous.

A Beautiful movie that thankfully isn't partisan
11 September 2021
The shots of "Radha-Krishna" (hindu deities) running through the temple are done so well I don't know what words to use to describe them.

The guy who played the main lead was only slightly above average. A better actor in his role could have elevated the movie. Also the actress who plays his girlfriend wasn't that good either. They are not bad but you cant help feel how mediocre they come off compared to rest of the cast.

The plot is gold. The writing is smart. It has satire, romance and humour which is all done well.

There are a few misfires like sub-plots of rajpal yadav (crazy reporter) and sanjay misra (the oppurtunist director) ended up feeling unnecessary and even cringy in the former's case. The police inspector's sub-plot even though fell in line with the story was not done well enough and came out slightly hammy.

Its an old movie and therefore the dubbing feels unnatural. But you will not be bothered that much.

You might be wondering why have I rated the film this high given my critic. Perhaps the rest of it is so good I needed the movie to be absolutely perfect.

The conversation b/w Anwar and his vagabond friend and pleasing to the ears and eyes. The minister and his goon are hilarious and a poignant reminder of our current realities.

The movie is relatable for Indians and a soft introduction to the others about the ways of the culture and politics here.

The shortcomings aside this is a supremely well directed movie. Almost everything it was aiming for was achieved.

"Maula Mere" song is beautiful and oddly enough -considering how songs are used in most of the bollywood movies - is in sync with the narrative.

Despite the subject matter, it was handled in a way that you will not get depressed but does makes you think of where we stand today. I commend that.

Even though it is 14 yrs old the movie is not a history piece. All of it is still happening and it is appalling when you think of it.

Trust this stranger and go watch it. It is there on Youtube.

I was Pleasantly Surprised !
9 September 2021
This movie would always show up on my prime video home page and I wondered why is it so. I recently watched "Young Adam" and found out they have the same director. I really liked that one so I naturally gave this one a shot.

This movie is really good !

It starts out cliched feeling like any other rom-com but the whole one shot club sequence which lasts for almost five minutes is impressive.

The sex scenes are hot and sexy like they were in "Young Adam". If nothing else then atleast the sex scenes will hold your attention in the beginning.

Then the movie gradually shifts tone - exactly like "Young Adam" - and by the end you are left feeling sad and poignant.

It has these brief moments where it things suddenly take a dark turn. The characters could have been fleshed out a little more to add more depth.

Despite all that it's a wonderful movie ( not joyful ) and in my case another one of those films that are rated way lower than what they deserve.

You can check out my profile I often rate such movies which I find criminally underrated.

Tumbbad (2018)

It's a Good and Unique movie. That's all.
9 September 2021
You will see a lot of "nationalist" reviews here similar to that you will see on all the other bollywood movies which are merely good when you look past that fact that it's made in bollywood and start judging on its own merits.

The set design, cinematography, and acting do not leave any room for complaints. When you take into consideration the miniscule budget one can't help feel impressed by what they have achieved.

The music is not bad, it gets the job done. Some of the dialogue is unintelligible. I had to rewind to understand what was being said. I liked how they used some Hindi words that have gone out of use nowdays in our daily conversation but seem relevant given the time period.

The story has enough to keep you hooked. It's not something extraordinary but good enough. I hope they extend it into a franchise. It has the potential for that.

Sure given the fact that "Tumbbad" has come out of bollywood makes people appreciate it more ( especially Indians ) but I don't deem it fit to give the movie extra points for that reason alone.

RECOMMENDED !

I wont spoil a thing

I stumbled upon this movie somehow and the description - jewish woman's love affair with a nazi doctor - was ridiculous enough for me to give it a try.

And so should you !

This is exactly how I watched this movie and I think so should you. Trust me you will have a great time. Especially all those monologues.

It Follows (2014)

One of those rare horror movies where characters are not overtly dramatic
20 August 2021
Throughout the film, all those who were not "infected" were almost always chill even though the protagonist was scared

You will notice it in the very beginning when that woman by the car offers to help and just casually carries on when rejected; this attitude persists all the way till the end.

I loved this little detail - which I have no idea if was intentional or not. This is because I imagine it portrays exactly our behavior if it were to happen in real life; doubting the person and moving on with our own lives.

Even when her friends eventually come to know its real they do not act dramatic and are not tense all the time afterwards.

This made it for me !

The thing that bothered me was how her mother was absent the whole time since they lived in the same house. Same feeling in that swimming pool showdown; how did they just trespassed into that building, fired guns and no one took notice the whole time. Weird.

Nonetheless the movie itself is creepy (if not scary). The music was impressive and adds to the mood.

I see the reviews are polarized here. Personally it was a really good movie which despite its few downsides stands strong on its own.

That so largely because of its plot.

There were talks about a sequel which would trace it origins of "it". I hope it gets made.

One of the most unique movie you will ever see....
19 August 2021
..or maybe it's just me. "A horror film about office politics", I have no better words to describe "Wolf".

The cast is superb. They all play their part well. Michelle Pfeiffer looks stunning.

The beginning felt awkward and I felt I was in for a cringe-fest but it improves drastically from there. By the end I felt the need for a sequel.

A truly imaginative movie that doesn't end up being pretentious.

Beautifully Directed and Acted.
19 August 2021
The direction here is top-notch and in my understanding the primary reason why this film turned out to be so good.

The way scenes are directed - minimal to no music and not overtly dramatic - gives the movie a realistic feel. I LOVED IT !

Set design is also excellent. It has some beautiful shots. The main lead did a good job - as expected.

Apparently this movie was a big flop at the box office which could be attributed to its trailer. It might have turned people off but after watching the film I guess it was tough to make one which feels genuine to the movie - so they ended up mismarketing it.

One could argue that the plot has been done to death but as the say "Winners don't do different things, they do things differently." Never thought I would use it to describe a movie but it fits perfectly here.

Definitely worth a watch.

The Boy (2016)

THE MOST underrated movie of all time !
19 August 2021
Watched this one just because of Lauren Cohen and I genuinely believe this movie deserves more than a rating of 6 which it has at the moment.

Last time I felt a movie was this criminally underrated was with "Compliance" and "The Quiet", both of which are excellent as well.

"The Boy" has its creepy moments, the story had potential and was nicely done, decent acting, no reason to bail out on this one good movie.

You will not be disappointed !

Not bad at all !
18 August 2021
It is one of those movies which is surprisingly good to watch. Cannot label it a guilty pleasure but a genuinely watchable movie.

The story has enough twists and turns to keep you interested. Even though the direction feels slightly amateur the movie is - I'm saying it for the third time now - pretty good.

The main actress is beautiful, acts well and has a few sex scenes so there you have it ! She was a major reason why I liked this movie.

Personally I didn't feel bored for one second. The movie is also not that long and I was genuinely pleasently surprised how good and entertaining this movie turned out to be.

A good movie which has one of the most eye-pleasing imagery I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot)
18 August 2021
The last time I was this spell-bound by a film's cinematography was probably Transformers: Last Knight.

That movie looked excellent, had jaw dropping shots but was incredibly difficult to sit through. Everything other than that was downright garbage (excluding music) . You can watch its clips on youtube but that movie as a whole is insufferable.

Coming to Eklavya, the cinematography here elevates this film to such a level that it becomes impossible to not recommend. Unlike Transformers you get good acting (amitabh especially), good music and story is pretty good as well.

It does have that one typical bollywood moment where you get the actress singing song in between the movie which was just unnecessary and could have been done in some other manner. Thankfully there is just one.

Anyway this is one of the better movies to come out of bollywood and even after all these years - I saw it on July 2021 - the visuals are eye catching.

Cold Skin (2017)

Pretty Good !
18 August 2021
I knew of this director from the movie "Divide". That one had a supremely interesting plot but I found it amateurish and eventually rushed through it. A lost opportunity.

Judging from his catalogue this director clearly has a penchant for unusual films so I gave "Cold Skin" a shot - it had a nice poster on prime video and intriguing description below it, which is how I choose what to watch almost always.

First of all this movie has EYE CATCHING cinematography especially considering its budget. I am stunned how they pulled it off with that much of money. The acting is good, the action is good, there wasn't a dull moment as the plot doesn't waste time and keeps moving forward.

The ending kinda sucked up until that it was a solid movie. Nonetheless I had a great time watching it. Wish we had sequel(s) to expand on story which could have made the ending suck less but still overall this movie is a great watch.

Compliance (2012)
9/10
People have rated it lower out of disgust not because of accuracy
25 June 2021
Read a lot of 1 star reviews on this film, they are admitting of this being a true story (which it really is) and then continue to give a negative rating. Then there are people who outright reject the fact that it can be true and they "turn off the TV 20 mins in".

Guys have the stomach to digest the fact that it is true and don't rate it lower if you feel disturbed by it and those of you who say it is too far-fetched to be true internet is your friend.

I went straight to the internet after watching this movie and what I found eventually left me numb. While reading the statement of the victims you get some insight of why they were so compliant. With all that information I can now understand their actions and it doesn't seem as far-fetched as it did before.

Give this movie a try.

Just like The Shinning.....Boring
22 June 2020
I'm not a fan of The Shinning. The only Kubrick film that I have enjoyed is Eyes Wide Shut and I liked that one very much.

This movie, while not as boring as Shinning, is just as weak in terms of story. I watched the director's cut and the story for me was just not engaging enough. This 3 hour version has its moments but as a whole movie I will use just one word, boring.

The cinematography is pretty good and actually made the movie bearable. Rebecca Ferguson was also nice. If you still wanna watch it, go for the director's cut. I read a comparison and the theatrical cut expands less on the characters than this one.
