Gen V (2023)
A bad copy of Buffy season 4 and Angel
Secret facility under the university ? Done in Buffy season 4 and much better. Episode with a puppet ? Done in season 5 of Angel.
Joss Whedon was way ahead of everyone. Now we have Gen V supposedly in the same universe as the Boys ?
The Boys built its popularity on humor and intelligent story telling , in a way it is parody on super hero movies.
But somehow in Gen V that's not been taken onboard. The only thing of The Boys you will find in Gen V is the gore and ... that is pretty much it. The rest is a bad copy of really succesful shows that were infinitely better. I was a huge fan of The Boys but this show has dented my faith in The Boys considerably.
Upload (2020)
7 episodes is not a full season !
I really like this show but streaming services seem incapable to create longer seasons which is a real turn off especially for shows with short episodes. I remember Friends from college on Netflix , 30 minutes episodes and only 8 of them. It just does not work for sitcom style comedy shows. Friends had 24 episodes ! I think this low episode count per season strategy should be reconsidered.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
There's no fire burning
It's a pity that I have to write a negative review. I wish it was different.
I consider myself patient that I held out for 6 episodes. So what's the problem of this show ? It's actually really simple , it's badly written. There's no depth to any of the dialogues , no passion.
Remember the first season of Game of thrones , zero action , 100% dialogue , politics and drama. That was top notch writing and acting.
You can throw 200 million dollars at creating something but if the story and dialogue is boring the best CGI won't save it.
The Duchess (2020)
Brutally funny !
So I watched Your Face or Mine on Comedy central with 2 hosts , Katherine Ryan and Jimmy Carr. I rarely connect with female comedians but I really liked her. So ok what other things does she do ? Google.
Oh 2 Comedy specials on Netflix and this show which she has written herself. I first watched the specials , they were brilliant.
This show ? Pure gold if you are desperate for some good comedy. Sometimes aggressive and in your face , sometime subtle. Great music and even nicely filmed.
Unfortunately Netflix execs already pulled the plug on this show. One of many mistakes Netflix is making these days.
I'm a fan Katherine Ryan.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Shallow
Not much going on here. No story depth , no humour.
Horizon Line (2020)
Not a B movie but a C movie
I didn't get to the plane crash. The prologue was so boring and the acting was terrible. I decided I didn't care enough to see what happened to them.
Passengers (2016)
Refreshing !
I already saw this movie 2 times and I am already ready to see it again.
Well written , well acted.
It doesn't need a bigger review. It's a must see.
The Liberator (2020)
Band of brothers from another perspective.
I love good war movies or series but good ones are rare.
Band of brothers and the Pacific are still the best to this date.
Enter The Liberator which is not filmed but animated with real actors.
It gives the show a lot of advantages as the uniforms and equipment like guns , tanks and vehicules are all authentic. Some old war movies like the Battle of the Bulge used post war M48 tanks. The story starts from a different place than Band of brothers. From Salerno in Italy to Anzio to the south of France and Germany. Watch this show it is really good.
Cobra Kai (2018)
A perfect extension to the Karate kid universe
This show is from 2018 and I didn't know about it. Then it turns up on Netflix.
Whaat , a show on what happened with the characters of the original Karate kid ?
My first instinct on any sequels is it's probably bad but I'm a bit curious to see Daniel and Johnny again.
Binge watched the first season and I am now into the second. My God this could not have been better written. I'm hooked.
Ralph and William do justice to their middle aged characters. They are mature , intelligent and funny at times.
And that describes the whole show , intelligently written with interesting characters and funny moments. Yes there's teen drama, of course there is but it's fun to watch. The music is awesome in this show too. Typical eighties hard rock.
I haven't seen the Karate kid movie in perhaps 20 years but this show takes me back there and that's a job well done.
For me this is the biggest surprise of 2020 so far.
Selling Sunset (2019)
I want my 10 wasted minutes back.
I am a huge fan of million dollar listing , sure there is some petty drama there as well but it is mostly about the houses. Those I want to see.
But Selling sunset introduces us to the Oppenheim barbie doll office. Even the real Barbie would question the specific talent needed to get a job at Oppenheim. Brains , nope. Body , yes.
The first discussions in the office show their shallowness and obvious addiction to money. There is nothing wrong with having money but behaving like spoiled jealous brats is low in my book.
If I had a million dollars to spend I would not use this estate agent out of principle.
Red Dwarf: The Promised Land (2020)
More please ...
I have been a fan for 30 years now and for some reason (I guess because I am foreign fan) I only recently discovered this movie was made. Just got the Blu ray yesterday and extremely enjoyed it. I did fear after Back to earth that the movie format is not suited for Red Dwarf but hey they did it. It is fantastic.
Would I prefer another 1,5 hour special or six new episodes ? Given the choice I would prefer the episodes but either way I am looking forward to what is next.
The Witcher (2019)
Netflix Flagship show suffers from amateuristic excecution
Oh how I'd love to love this show. The story has all the ingredients to equal the quality of Game of Thrones yet it fails to deliver.
The pilot episode was just atrocious , it felt like a badly written B movie. It had some horrible dramatic scenes , the city was stormed but in the room where the queen was dying (taking way too much time) nobody had a sense of urgency. The wizard that was stopping the attackers from behind the curtain didn't even break a sweat when his spell to stop them was finally broken. The big black guard then casually walked around the castle , knocking like a little bird on each door doling out suicide flasks. Why ? The daughter of the queen escaped through a back door with only a few guards why didn't they all tried to excape ?
This whole scene was so badly written and performed by the actors. It's clear that the wrong people were in charge for this first episode.
Still I stuck with it and episode 2 was much better , the bard brings in a bit of humor which was much needed.
Continueing on however the quality of the episodes jumps up and down. Another great scene where the Queen is looking for a husband for her daughter made completely no sense. Two times she tries to kill her daughter's suitor , a knight that's been cursed and has the head of urchin. This happens in real time in maybe half an hour. Still they happily marry after all has been cleared up. Nobody is mad at anyone anymore and they all hold hands. I really wanted to stop watching after that episode.
What's wrong with this series is that creators sometimes take the wrong storylines to focus on. The episodes are also a full hour long , it would have been better to make 10 x 50 minutes episodes than 8 x 1 hour episodes. You really feel the creators of this show are struggling to fill the 60 minutes with story. The best bits of this show are of course with Geralt , Yenefer, Ciri and the bard. Most of the supporting cast lack the screen presence to be watchable.
And that's the great tragedy of this show , a better team behind the controls would have truly made this a flagship show.
Lost in Space (2018)
A high quality family adventure!
Sometimes I feel people rate a show based on unrealistic expectations. This is not a PG16 show , it's a family show and a good one at that.
The CGI is really really good here and the adventures of the Robinsons are really fun to watch. Season 2 is even better than season 1.
Thankfully this is not Another Life or the I-land , 2 PG16 shows from Netflix that have scripts that looked to have been written by kids.
Just give the Robinsons a chance !
The Expanse (2015)
Best Sci Fi series of the past 3 years but where is the buzz ? Create buzz !
Just moved over to Primetime to watch season three. I can't understand why Netflix dropped the best SF series in years.
This is SF as it is meant to be and judging by the poor competition good SF scripts seem tough to write. I'd have to go back to Battlestar Galactica to find the same level of enjoyment and honestly I like the Expanse more. It's darker , has more suprises and has a bigger scope.
This show deserves a bigger marketing campaign because I do not think the rest of the world is aware of this show. To close a message to Amazon. Please see this show through to the end and release it on Blu Ray. I will buy it and view it for many years to come.
Another Life (2019)
2 stars because of Katee !
I am a big big Sci Fi fan. But sadly not many writers are capable of writing good Sci Fi scripts.
The 16+ rating and seeing Katee Sackhoff again made me watch this show the moment I got my Netflix e-mail in. Like most here I hate spaceship crews that act like idiots and whom are unprofessional. We all know the level of commitment it takes to become an astronaut.
Not so in this series it seems. If any of the crew onboard has any special abilities and skills other than being dressed by the way they look it was not apparent.
Uniforms in this future have no use anymore. There are also no ranks like Captain on this ship. It's all supposed to run perfectly smooth on first name basis.
Think about how insane that sounds. It makes totally no sense. Well it would if this new system would mean that the crew work in perfect harmony but at the first sign of trouble there is a mutiny and they have just woken up not 24 hours before. This why hierarchies exist plot writers !
I can go on but suffice to say that most of the crew are unlikeable cannon fodder. Apparently there are more crew members stowed away , one guy that they woke up , a biologist or something was really likeable and funny and 10 times smarter than the rest but he got killed in favor of the more stupid guy that went on to save the ship. I guess the writers have a problem with smart people.
One final annoying thing is the whole trying to communicate with the alien vessel on earth. With ... hold your breath ... classical music ! How original.
If the aliens turn out to behave like a swarm with one mother alien I will literally eat my shoes.
Z Nation (2014)
A different and interesting take on a Zombiepocalypse
The way the positive reviews on Imdb were written about this series made me want to check it out and I'm glad I did.
I just completed the full first season and it deserves a better score than the current 6,7. This show is seriously entertaining.
So where do I come from ? I dropped out of watching the Walking dead after season 5 and even during season 4 I was no longer enjoying it. I had too many gripes with the plot and the characters.
Having been zombieless for a couple of years now I stumbled on this show on Netflix. Came to read the reviews and finished the first 13 episode season in a week and a half.
What's so good about it you ask ? Well for one the characters are entertaining and the show has humor. Which are already 2 things I missed in the Walking dead. The storyline is also engaging and it explores other things than the Walking dead. The zombies in Z nation are more deadly and you learn more of the origins of the zombie virus. The setting , the atmosphere is spot on.
Don't wait , binch it now.
