Captain Marvel (2019)
I really wanted to like this film
Lots of special effects, lots of bravado, but little in the way of backstory or dynamism in any of the characters. Just seemed very paint by the numbers and mail it in for the checks type of acting. Captain Marvel was just a generic OP'd character and the villains were uninteresting. Everything was just so predictable. Only Samuel L. Jackson seemed to be worth watching.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A must see movie of the year...
Go watch this movie. Its more than a horror film. The acting ensemble is phenomenal. Definitely made me connect with many of the characters and made them more believable.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Cheesy but still better than Last Jedi
Literally paint by numbers storyline, which is fine for fans of the series, but could be a little boring for new filmgoers. TBH, the whole film felt like fan-fiction. Prepare for extra thick plot-armor for the noblest of causes. The action scenes and set pieces were most enjoyable parts of the film, with good tempo and pacing. Narrative had a somewhat logical progression. The actors did an average job of delivering lines typical of Maze Runner campy humor. Overall the film made for a decent generic action film with familiar plot devices. Worth a matinee viewing or DVD rental..
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Best movie I've seen this year
Critics don't know a good movie when they see one. This movie is just outstanding performance by the entire cast in music, dance and story. Good pacing and it didn't seem long at all. If you want to leave the theater with a stupid grin on your face, just go watch this one.
I, Tonya (2017)
Hard to watch...
I am not a big fan of domestic violence, even if its a retrospective character piece, its hard to stomach. The star of the movie was not Margot Robbie's Tonya, but Alliison Janney, whose protrayal of overbearing/vindictive mother of Harding was uncanny and mesmerizing. The whole movie should have focused more on that dynamic, then the rest of the film. Sebastian's Jeff Gillooly was a little unwatchable, as half the performance was him beating her. Rest of the film was more the aftermath of Nancy Kerrigan incident. Don't expect many scenes with Nancy Kerrigan character, its more a Tonya Harding centric pic. Worth watching on DVD, maybe for Janney's performance.
Molly's Game (2017)
Good Character-driven film
Didn't think I would like the film at the beginning, but it grew on me. Sorkin knows how to write dialogue and made some good decisions on pacing. Though felt the other characters could have had more screen time like between Cera's Player X or other Hollywood celebs. Sorkin seemed to gloss over those characters from the book and made them a little to generic. Costner seemed a little hammy with his demanding father protrayal. That being said, both Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain really delivered strong performances on their characters. Both of whom made it worth watching.
The Disaster Artist (2017)
Thought it would be funnier..
Great performance by James and Dave Franco. Although it had its funny moments, I think the original Tommy Wiseau in the Room was funnier. I liked the overall message about perseverance and friendship at the end.
Sin-gwa ham-kke: Jwi-wa beol (2017)
Better than Last Jedi...
The CGI can be really mind-blowing at times and some strong performances by the guardians, but what really holds it together is the family drama under the fantasy elements. Definitely worth watching.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Why so many jokes?
For a Star Wars film, there was waay too much joking. No emotional depth to the film. They could have explored more about the Force and the connection between Ren and Kylo, but nope. Or explored Snoke or Ren's background. Nope. Nobody really died except Luke and it was more like half-assed see ya around kid???
