Class of '07 (2023)
A good start, but then a tumble downhill
First episode was really good, but as the show went on it gradually did what I hoped it wouldn't: all the characters went back to what they were like in high school. Not only is this unrealistic, my big problem with this is it's unoriginal and predictable.
I'm only on episodic 3 and I'm ready to quit. This had potential, but they seem to have squandered it. Some fantastic actors are in this shown and they're wasted.
I'm going to keep going for another episode or two (if I can stomach it, thankfully they're short) and if it improves I'll happily delete this review and give a better rating - but I can't really seen that happening unfortunately.
Poker Face: The Night Shift (2023)
I love it when one actor just steals the show!
Great episode. Natasha Lyonne is of course brilliant (everything she does here is such a fantastic tribute to Peter Falk, if this was a Columbo remake I would welcome it with open arms), but John Ratzenberger stole the show with an understated performance. Not many words, just a few gestures was all he needed to show everything we needed to know about this character.
I'm enjoying having a different cast in each episode (reminds me of 80s show I grew up with) so as long as they keep the quality this good I will definitely keep watching.
I am really enjoying this show, and can't wait to see where Charlie goes next.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
They did it again...
Second season finale in a row which not only matched but exceeded my expectations. So much happened, it'll take a while for it all to sink in. The Boys truely is a great show - three seasons in and doesn't show any signs of slowing down.
That last scene - just "wow"!
The Orville: Electric Sheep (2022)
Unfortunately not worth the wait
I'm a huge fan of The Orville, and rewatched the first two seasons this week in preparation of the third. Didn't live up to what's gone before. Seth, I know you're a massive Trek fan, but please don't tell me you've purposefully included a Mary-Sue (Charly-Sue) to homage to fanfics too? Honestly, this character could ruin the show, which would be a huge waste of great talent in front of and behind the cameras. I'm sure the actress is a great person, but the character.... (Brian or Peter voice) just terrible.
Anatomy of a Scandal: Episode #1.4 (2022)
Bosporan - I hope you read this...
...as that was the most epic review ever! Fantastic! 10 stars!!
The reason why? Because this is the episode with the reveal at the end, it's the ONLY episode so far that something's happened other than those weird backward jumps the main characters did in the last seconds of the first two episodes.
Again, Bosporan - bravo!!
Resident Alien: Girls' Night (2022)
Would have been 9/10 except...
... for playing Is Suicide is Painless at the end. It didn't go with the rest of the episode.
Not sure what everyone else is complaining about: the issue is real and something that is on-going. It was handled well.
Titans: Hank & Dove (2021)
Everyone's an idiot... but an enjoyable episode
Everyone has been dumbed down to make the villain look super-intelligent - it is very bad writing. But still, the outcome (no matter how obvious) was well executed (see what I did there?). I was almost certain that Dove would be the one to die in a "huge twist", but no, they made it her fault Hank died. Pretty evil.
I'm hoping this is the end of the dumb titans and that the writing gets better from here, but I doubt it. Well acted, the mood/lighting is fantastic, and the effects are well done. If only the script could match everything else this would be seen as the definitive Batman-related tv series.
I love what they've included but the way they get from "a" to "b" leaves a lot to be desired.
The Hunt (2020)
Great fun
I really enjoyed this movie. I'm a filthy leftist who are the bad guys in this, so aren't I meant to hate it?
Betty Gilpin was incredible, and probably the best female action star I've seen in years (actually, one of the best action stars of either sex). Loved her character, and want to see her do more like this.
My only criticism is the final fight: she's a vet going up against someone who's trained for 8 months? She should have completely destroyed her in seconds.
I don't want a sequel (doesn't need it), I just want to see Betty Gilpin kicking arse again!
Night Teeth (2021)
Just... terrible
Everyone involved in this awful, boring, cheap movie should hang their head in shame. I've seen some awful movies in my time, but this.... Wow - and not in a good way. Not the worst plot, really badly executed. They never explain why the two main vampire characters are so much stronger than the others (or why the main baddie is stronger than the vamps in charge) - it's usually due to age, but they weren't out of the ordinary old in this story. They don't show the fights, just the aftermath, and the effects are pretty awful. Not well acted, and the characters were not likeable. A redeeming feature? It's over and I never have to watch it again.
Cooking with Bill (2017)
'King awful
Could have been great. Has been done before SO much better. This is the third of these I've watched, and all of them have been disappointing. Even though this was only 10 minutes long, I want that time back.
Big Little Lies (2017)
Don't bother with the second season
A really good series, superb cast. The first season was intriguing and incredibly well acted (Alexander Skarsgard especially), and even with an obvious reveal at the end, it didn't taken anything away from it.
Season two just didn't have the same appeal, even with Meryl Streep adding her incredible skills to it.
This was meant to be a limited series and I really think it should have stayed that way.
Becky (2020)
Not as unbelievable as other reviewers would have you believe, but still not good
I was ok with this until that stupid scream after she killed Apex. Absolutely ruined it for me. Never revealing what the key was for irked me too, but it obviously for some Nazi weapon or other. I can see this having a sequel in a few years time with Becky as a white-supremacist baddie (although she wasn't really the goody in this - not likeable, in fact a complete brat). I don't think we found out what happened to her future step-Mum and step-brother, but I wouldn't be surprised if she killed them too.
American Horror Stories: Game Over (2021)
Started off well, sagged in the middle and a good ending
Not sure why all the bad reviews; yes, it lost it a bit when it became The Scarlett Show, but overall I enjoyed it. Can't give it more than a 6, but it wasn't awful.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
Just not enjoyable
A lot of complaints have been about focusing on Teela and not He-Man. I can see why that's annoyed people (I'm more annoyed about the lack of Skeletor), but my main problem with it is that for an obviously "woke" and feminist show, the women are saved (and manipulated, close to controlled) by the men. Also, the whole "Teela is LGBQ+" thing should have been handled better: if she is, then show it, don't just imply it. This isn't the 90s, you don't have to do that anymore. They seem to have missed their own point.
Aside from that, the storyline seemed quite shallow: they killed off their main character (yes, he was definitely dead), only to bring him back to be killed again by Skeletor (in one of the best parts of the whole series) and Teela only found out one of the big secrets that had been kept from her.
The best parts were the voice cast, and seeing some quite obscure characters - even if they were just cameos.
Am I going to watch these episodes again? Never. Will I watch the next part of the season? Only if there's more storyline and - I've got to say it - if they focus on He-Man and Skeletor more.
Lucifer: Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam (2021)
The musical episode
I have both been dreading and looking forward to this one. My favourite musical episodes (Buffy, Scrubs and Psych) all had original songs. Reworkings of established songs doesn't always work, but for the majority of the time here it did. The singing and dancing were good, and not massively cringe (although they got close). This was a big gamble, and they did well.
The Affair: Episode #4.5 (2018)
The only reason I'm still watching is because I'm over half way through
Just... awful. I'm only watching so I can finish it now.
Invincible: We Need to Talk (2021)
Superb. Exactly what a penultimate episode should be
This series has been really good all the way through. Yes, there was some obvious stuff in this episode, but it was so well done you can forgive that. I usually only watch live-action, but this is one of the best series I've seen in the last couple of years. Here's hoping next weeks finale keeps up the high standard.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Whole World Is Watching (2021)
Another strong episode
Another very good episode, with the final minute or so making it incredible! The implications/fallout after this will be HUGE. Loving this series.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Star-Spangled Man (2021)
Two episodes in and loving it
Yes, this is classic MCU but for television. It has action, comedy and heart. This gives me hope for the next phase, both movies and television. The actors really know their characters and are fantastic to watch. I even liked the new Cap (a little) but I'll be surprised if he survives to the end of the series (even if he does live he won't be Captain anymore). It's good to be finally back in the MCU.
WandaVision (2021)
May have suffered from being released weekly
I changed my rating from a 1 to a 5. After episode 3, this show was much improved, but was nowhere near as enjoyable as I'd hoped. The effects in the finale weren't that good, the overall story didn't really go anywhere expect for Wanda (and possibly bringing that Vision again), but did it really justify 9 episodes? No it did not. 5 or 6 would have been plenty, all around the 35 minute mark (excluding credits).
I think the weekly release gave way for fan theories to run wild, and like GOT and Star Wars VIII before it, a lot of them were better than the show we actually got. We were pretty much teased with other characters from the MCU, but none of the big ones turned up (although they were mentioned). With such a large budget and this being the first of the real MCU series, they could have done this easily - even Agents of SHIELD had Nick Fury a couple of times.
My biggest problem with the show was the X-Men introduction cop-out. Evan Peters just happens to be playing a completely different character who is "re-cast" by the baddie as Wanda's brother and isn't Peter from another universe? Oh, please. It was fantastic to see him, it opened up possibilities and then they just dashed them. The only real connection we got to the X-Men universe is the use of the name Scarlett Witch, and that is nothing compared to what they could have done. I'm hoping I've missed something, and Evans's character is someone who will connect the universes, and not just some random.
Not a show I'd watch again or recommend, although I do realise some of it will have an impact on the rest of the MCU, but they don't justify a whole series.
Looking forward to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
Watched from a different point of view
The ending to this was applied for me in a Facebook Netflix group before I even started watching it, so I was viewing it with some knowledge and tried to see how we would get to the ending.
I don't think I would have worked it out, and my only criticism of the twist is that Rob's change to murderer seemed too dramatic, too much of a stretch - his bad side should have been shown more: it was a large leap from a cheeky heroin addict who would steal stuff to someone who would kill their best friend to take over their life. A nastier streak should have been presented to the viewer.
The Astro projection came from nowhere too, but I can forgive that. Overall not a bad series, and six episodes was about right - definitely no longer than that
Star Trek: Lower Decks: No Small Parts (2020)
The best episode, but...
...still pretty awful. Role turning up at the end and saving the day was great. I even chuckled a couple of times (haven't really done that during the whole show), but this is a very ordinary series. I like all the references, but it's proven a show can't rely and exist on this alone.
I'm completely surprised that it's received a second series (which I probably won't watch unless there's absolutely nothing else on again). One good thing I will say: it's better than season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery
WandaVision: We Interrupt This Program (2021)
Best episode by far, but...
... it proves my point that the other episodes weren't needed. We were in Wanda's world for over an hour (3 episodes), when one would have done.
Seeing people return from The Snap was incredible, and you can see where the gargantuan budget for this show was gone. Having characters from multiple Marvel movies working together was great.
This was a good episode, and gives me hope for the rest, but it doesn't change the fact the previous ones were not needed and were boring.
Was this payoff worth it? Probably not, but if the next few are good then possibly. I think if you started at this episode you wouldn't really miss out on anything
Star Trek: Lower Decks: Crisis Point (2020)
Why the love?
Unsure why people rave about this episode. The series is mediocre at best, and this is the worst one (so far). The only reason I'm sticking with it is because there's simply nothing else to watch, and it's a throw-away show which you don't have to even think about
Supernatural: Fan Fiction (2014)
They interrupted a good story for this...
I loved the Demon Dean storyline - it had so much potential, but in my opinion it was cut short to make way for this, the 100th episode. It really wasn't worth it. This is one of the few episodes I skip. Yes, there are good moments, but overall this is a sub-par episode. Plus not very good acting from the kids doesn't help either
