Brush of Baphomet (2009)
Absolute trash.
It is the worst by Kenneth Anger for trying to express a disturbing atmosfere without giving any true meaning at what the paintings should represent to the viewer or what they meant to Crowley nor what they ment to Anger.
Not only the History Channel "documentary style" lacks knowledge, but the camera moves and lighting prevents the viewer from even understanding what's in front of them, and when you can, Crowleys lack of hability to paint and teenager-like symbolisms punishes your eyes. Stuff like "WOAH, the difference between light and night, man.", "WOAH, the difference between good and bad, have you thought about that, bro?". Absolutely insulting to Angers career and to the viewers.
Opera (1987)
Absolute Mess!
It goes down since the beginning.
Somebody dies in the middle of a performance and the characters mention it later on in the dullest way, as if nobody cared or were surprised. Ummm, okay?
It never tries to be scary, and when it does it can only achieve a scare with jump-scares.
There would be silence in the room and suddenly the phone is ringing and the girl screams.
When characters die you don't care, because we saw them very few times before they get killed.
The performances are the worst I've ever seen. It's amazing that none of them, including the protagonist, is able to convey something other than awkwardness. Baffling.
The direction is inconsistent. Sometimes the scenes would be clear and readable, but sometime the camera would be uncapable of staying still. The characters were sitting in a room and the camera would do all kind of things, as though the DP didn't know where exactly to be, so he chose to be everywhere.
Why would I care for the protagonist when she doesn't have a personality? She's doesn't have any trait. She never stops to reflect what has to her life. She doesn't even cry the deaths of her friends and lover. If she doesn't care, why should I?
Lastly, the movie has this terrible habit of, whenever you see a terrible event take off as a murder in front of the protagonist eyes, a sudden rock song plays on the background as though we were supposed to be amused or aroused. I thought this was a serious movie, not a teen slasher kind of movie.
