Bloody Hell (2020)

Hell yeah !
24 January 2023
I came into this with no expectations except finding some thriller / horror movie good enough for a late night watch. Jeez, I was fully engaged after only a few minutes in, and this movie kept me entertained till its very end. THIS is how you do it ! I mean, the film is something between a lot of genre... B-movie with suspense, horror, comedy... And it does well at everything ! Camera work is excellent, the story is quite simple but the way it's narrated is brilliant, actors are all pretty great and I got to tell, Ben O'Toole steals every scene... Damn, I really hope he gets bigger projects in the next years cause he definitely deserve big roles ! Well watch it for yourself, it was a pleasant surprise for me.

Got me engaged the whole time
19 December 2022
Hell yeah, what's not to like in here? I have read some reviewers saying it was too long, I have to disagree with that... the character developement is amazing, the atmosphere is kept strong the whole time, there's nothing needed to be removed. If you've seen some other Zahler's stuff you know you're going to deal with pretty dark ambiances and sometimes intense graphic violence, but if you're OK with it, you'll have a pleasant ride. Speaking about violence nothing feels free here, it's raw and tense, obviously, but contrary on Winding Refn or Tarentino, you don't get that exagerated feeling. A solid dark heist movie which I enjoyed almost as well as Heat from Michael Mann.

It's a win
23 May 2021
Came here for Charlie Tahan as Im a big fan since Ozark, without expecting much about the movie. Turned out to be quite entertaining with some good laughs here and there. Simple movie about life, and our abilities to make decisions / take actions, pictured in a college where Michael (Charlie) seems to get as stuck in real life as he is in the night bus he's driving every night on a loop, to bring back drunk college kids from parties to their places.

Good acting, likeable characters, and very funny moments. This movie put a big smile on my face.

No substance and no commonsense
2 May 2021
This movie runs for too long, could have made a decent 40 minutes shortfilm, but as it is now it's boring. I don(t mind slow burns, but this one is just slow period, feels like cuts have been made like this to fill gaps until they reach 90 minutes.

On the bright side, main character is ok and well played, and there's a kinda 80's artsy feel with the music, lights and color. Some tension, and the killing scenes are pretty dense and shocking... On the other side : It's long, repetitive, and there's too much stupid and irrational decisions from the characters, lots of stuff doesnt make sense and the characters look just plain stupid ! I'm not gonna spoil, but unless you're 12 y.o there's too much you can't buy!

I would have put 5 stars just to say it could be an okay film if the ending had been decent, but event there it fails to deliver... You'll be surprised, yes, but not in a good way, as it feels entirely illogical and rushed.

Wasted potential.

I didn't expect much but it turned out to be kinda ok...

As much would expect this movie is another kind of "found footage - Blair Witch inspired". What was good in it? Well, acting was decent actually and characters were ok. Locations are well shot, and even if it was not really scary there actually was a sense of disgust/creep through what the characters slowly get into. Waht was bad? Let's face it, there's quickly too much going on with some people going one way, the others another, new one introduced, and so on, it gets all messy, for the last third of the movie it turns out to go from horror found footage to an action movie, it's all over the place and so the ending turns to be rushed and not really satisfying. I'd say there's good ideas in this film but the writer/director should have made some choices when it came to how to conduct them. It bites more than it can chew ! Anyway, regarding it's a low budget indie horror flick it's of course another forgetable film but fairly watchable if you're into the genre.

The Empty Man (2020)

Enough with the bad reviews, StarWars fans. Of course this movie isn't for you...
15 January 2021
I liked this movie a lot. It's definitly well thought, well put together, and it got me engaged the whole time. It didnt felt long even considering it runs for more than 2 hours. Sure thing the story requires a bit of attention to follow along, and I think the audience has to cope with the fact it's an artsy film which don't follow a typical genre path. There's sci-fi elements, fantastic, drama and of course horror with actually a good amount of scary scenes. And it's a pretty dark story. There's a lot of good twists and we are as much lost as the main character, an ex cop, that we follow through a bizarre investigation. Acting was good. Shots are very well done, and above all the sound design and music are extremely good and contribute to a unique and incredible atmosphere. This movie is a solid 7 out of 10 to me and I'll probably watch it again. I'll recommend it if you are into Lovecraft atmospheres and sci fi horror.

The plot / subject isn't very new, I 'll give you that, but it is very well acted and executed. It's tense and gripping from start to finish. A must watch.

I died out of boredom
30 October 2020
Let make this quick : The kinda "decent" acting, the FXs, makeups, the beautiful scenery and lights/colors pushed me to put a 4 stars, out of 10. The awfully long story so full of clichés and all the way long predictable made me keep the score as it is. Plot is so lame that it made me think it was written by a bunch of high school kids for a mandatory school project...

Cheap Blair Witch movie
28 October 2020
I came here with an open mind as this movie was rated 6 out of ten, based on 400 reviewers already.

Well this is a 3 to 4 stars top for me, it kinda builds up right with this whole story of a "friend's hunting weekend" in a remote place where some of them start to encounter bizarre stuff, but, sorry not sorry, the ending fails it entirely...

And I mean ok, as a found footage style in creepy woods, where satanist symbols start to show up, Blair Witch project did that first and then we seen plenty of copies since... So I feel cheated on if you leave me with a sudden rushed ending where litterally nothing is explained.

If you like those atmospheres go for it, but if you like movies with some kind of story or scenario you'll be left very unsatisfied.

A solid 7 for me
4 February 2020
Not your usual sci-fi / fantastic movie. Whether you like it or not, there is some solid work put behind this movie. It's a visual and audio opera, especially the second half. And it's a continuous "madness" buildup from the start to the very end. Actors are very good, Cage is awesome, and Laura Dern is perfect. And not all movies are that good at picturing "living nightmares". It might have been better with a little more explanations or hints by the end. But it's just my opinion. Thing is the movie appears to be very rational in its first part, and just takes the "all about paranormal" in its second part. But that might be director's choice and it kinda works in some way actually. Last point is it's a bit too long in my opinion. Would have been a perfect 90 minutes movie. Anyway, it's a visual feast, a unique atmosphere, which is truly catchy, an interesting story and, most important point to mention, an original "crossed-genre" movie. Worth a watch.

Could you even picture yourself in this situation ?
16 November 2018
This was a good movie, but not an easy watch. To avoid any spoiler I am just going to point out the fact that this movie puts you deeply in questioning, in a kind of disturbing way. And that's good. It's not your typical serial killer story here, really it's more like " how would you sort out this high level of sickness... because even as a watcher, well you witnessed it and have to live with it !. This is slow paced, just enough to build this uneasy tension. Thumbs up to the camera work, we get some real artistic framing and lightning here. And also, most importantly, let applause the fantastic acting of the father and son characters. You'll find yourself diving in this with them after just a few minutes. A solid 8 for me. Warning : You may need a drink after this.

Nothing New, but Everything's excellent
12 October 2018
As a thriller fanatic, I have to say as I've entitled this, that this movie re-integrates all the codes you have seen previously in this kind of "mirror and twisted reality" universe. What's good here is the storyline is well built, do not expect jumpscares but instead prepare yourself for some great tension going on. Another great point : All characters have their role and contribution, and btw let salute the acting. I am discovering India Eisley in this movie and can tell this is a pleasant surprise, she carries the film on her shoulder, no doubt about it. To sum up this is the kind of movie where you hop into within the ten first minutes, and stay stuck until the very end. An enjoyable dark tale, and a nice and wise addition to the genre.

You can pass on this one
5 October 2018
Let's keep it simple. You won't find in this movie anything new to the genre. There is the creep, the teenager's group that get harmed by the creep, the visions of the murdered victims who have been killed before by the creep, and so tu sum all of this, the traditional tension scenes leading to jumpscare scene, which unfortunatly didn't work on me. Well, that being said, this still could be some "allright" horror show to kill the time when there's nothing else to watch, except it's SO SLOW PACED... for real... I had to retain myself to fast forward the second half of the movie to get to the ending. I honestly think there was enough material for a 40 minutes shortfilm, except they extended it for your greatest boredom.

first half is boring... and second half honestly sucks
26 September 2018
I gave it a try because the plot looked good. Honestly the only okay thing about this movie is the actress acting. Otherwise everything is predictable, so predictable that in fact the movie is just going in circles for the whole second part. In fact, after one hour watching this, I was just hoping for the ending to come quick as it was so long and boring to watch, and I can tell the ending is really ... man ...really disappointing !

So bad, I cant believe how BAD this is
25 January 2018
Long story short : -no scenario
  • worst acting ever (you want to punch the face of the main character...)
  • end is so bad that you want a payoff for wasting that much your time. Im serious, its just a bad climax of some home invasion, with no explanation at all...

Remarkable
25 January 2018
This movie was highly entertaining till this end, good plot and good flick, good acting all te way long, and also some really good sense of humor through this film noir story, which reminds me from some brittish crime movies like Guy Ritchies one's. I think it's fair to give it a 9 stars as it cuts though all those average thrillers we constantly got... well this one is a decent popcorn flick!
