Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge (1987 TV Movie)
7/10
Great reunion movie!
27 November 2009
This was far better than I was expecting; a solid reunion movie although only a handful of cast members returned. In a sense, this is kind of a "Wrath of Khan" for "Gunsmoke." Returning foe Mannon (expertly played by Steve Forrest) heads into Dodge to wreak vengeance on Matt and Kitty. There are quite a few flashback scenes, but they further the plot. Although James Arness looks a little odd at times (why did they color his hair??), he's still the same Matt Dillon we last saw in the mid 70s. The real scene stealer is Forrest with his blue-eyed glare and gruesome demeanor. Earl Holliman also gives a great performance as Jake Flagg, loyal friend to Matt (although it's never explained why he's in prison). Even the most casual "Gunsmoke" fan will be be impressed.

Zero to Sixty (1978)
Hmmmm....
15 June 2009
I like this movie although I am not sure why. I saw it more than 20 years ago on cable and thanks to OnDemand, I had the chance to see it again. No real plot to keep up with, but lots of crazy car chases and a script loaded with banter between Darren McGavin (who does way to many scenes in his underwear) and the young lady who played Violet in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." I always wondered why McGavin wasn't a bigger star and why he was relegated to B-movie material like this. He manages to save the film with his comic timing. Likewise, the young lady, whose name escapes me, is pretty funny too. As many of the posters have indicated, this is a fairly uncomfortable movie. After all, the teen-age lead wants to bed the significantly older (at least 50!) McGavin!??! Very weird! There's little chance this movie would get released today with such a premise. In any event, "Zero to Sixty" is fast-paced enough to be interesting and entertaining. Watching it will definitely bring back memories of those numerous Saturday afternoon matinées featuring mindless PG B-flicks loaded with profane scripts and plenty of car wrecks. Enjoy.

Wake me when it's over!
2 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Will these chicks shut the hell up already??? Man, this was the talkiest hen fest I have ever sat through. Okay, the chicks are hot, but as characters they are annoying, hateful and uninteresting. I understand that Tarantino has a way with dialog, but this was purely a masturbatory exercise in script writing. Where's the action?? Ugh. It is no surprise that this was a first class flop in theaters. Kurt Russell is wasted here, and the climactic car chase is way too short. Again, QT tries to dazzle his audience with his cool tastes in films ("Vanishing Point"), but has trouble making a film to idolize. Avoid if you can, or fast forward to the action-packed final scenes.

Not so super, man!
2 September 2008
I am glad that I did not see this on the big screen. This was such a labor to watch that I had to record it on DVR and watch in segments. Talk about boring. I get that Singer was trying to make a profound, introspective Superman film, but come on! Good effects but lame action sequences. The plot was ridiculous...even by comic book standards. Decent casting...except for Bosworth as Lois Lane. She and Routh had no chemistry whatsoever. He was a pretty good Superman, but too often, he seemed like a stand-in for Christopher Reeve. He looks like him, sounds like him and pretty much delivered a Reeve imitation in many scenes. The addition of a kid to the canon was also a stomach-turner! Singer turned down X-Men 3 for this dud, and that was a superior comic book movie in every way. This overlong, self-indulgent mess is a huge disappointment. If you're a die-hard fan of the Man of Steel, then perhaps you'll walk way satisfied. For many, however, this is like the "Heaven's Gate" of super hero flicks.

The name says it all...
7 August 2008
I like P. Shpeeris, so I might be a little biased toward this movie. I think she did a good job with it, but as an interviewer, she comes across as a frustrated mother. Then again, how can anyone not be frustrated with the kids depicted in this film. From the opening interview, it's apparent that the movie's subjects are lazy and pretty stupid. Yes, I know some of them came from broken homes, etc., but they all come across as degenerates. It's hard to be sympathetic toward these teen-age train wrecks, but it's even harder to turn away from this film. And one has to question why these kids are the way they are? Has our country bred a subculture of mohawked hobos? Or, are things really that screwed up for troubled youth? The answers will vary depending on whom you ask, but go into this movie knowing you will be either very sad or very angry.

The World's Deadliest Architect!
6 June 2008
This not the best "Death Wish" film, but who can resist seeing Bronson go nuts...especially when he was well into his 70s??!!! The plot of this movie is not unlike something that would appear on Lifetime. A fashionista's abusive, mobster ex-husband starts trouble for her and it's up to the vigilante architect Paul Kersey to help. The film is a little slow and the plot is pretty thin, but the supporting cast isn't too bad. Michael Parks and Robert Joy make very sleazy villains. So much so, the audience can't wait for Bronson to lay down the law on them. Not a fitting end to the "Death Wish" series, but it's nice to see that Bronson was still at it at this late stage in his career.

Death Wish 3 (1985)
The lighter side of vigilantism...
5 June 2008
While the first two Death Wish films were pretty gritty affairs, this 80s offering is pretty campy. Bronson returns to NYC to visit a buddy who lives in what might be the worst ghetto in the world. Gang crime is rampant, and it's up to Bronson to save the day. Look for the original Chuck Cunningham from "Happy Days"(Gavan O'Herlihy) as the ugly gang leader with a reverse mohawk. Trekkies will also recognize a then-unknown Marina Sirtis as the wife of one of Bronson's neighbors. This is a crazy movie, but I love it. It's completely unbelievable! Bronson orders all kinds of military gear in the mail. From machine guns to rocket launchers, he can get all kinds of stuff to combat the baddies. It's pretty odd that the postal service never noticed that dangerous weaponry was being sent through the mail. Suspend all sense of belief before watching this! The synth soundtrack is courtesy of Zeppelin's Jimmy Page (a neighbor of director Michael Winner) and reflects the era in which this film was released. Not an Academy Award winner, but never boring.

Urban Nightmare
4 June 2008
The sequels are all pretty seedy and somewhat laughable. This movie, however, packs a punch. Bronson is very believable as a liberal pacifist turned angel of death. I do find it hard to believe the NYPD would focus all of their efforts on locating a vigilante when so many other crimes are going unsolved -- including the murder of Bronson's wife! NYC comes across as a very scary place, and in the 1970s, it probably was. Never mind the hip NYC depicted in "Annie Hall," this Big Apple is pretty rotten. The film opens with Bronson and wife on an idyllic Hawaiian vacation. When they return, the shot of the city's smoggy skyline reflects a sense of dread. A very effective movie and one of Bronson's best.

Whatever happened to Jonna Lee??
27 May 2008
I had no idea that this was based on a true story, but it's a pretty believable premise. A small town girl gets caught up in the drug-fueled and lucrative nude modeling and porn industry, then her life goes down the toilet. Jonna Lee was pretty good in this role. I wonder what happened to her. The only other movie I saw her in was "Making the Grade." Lee's character was more of a mess than a victim. It was kind of hard to feel sorry for her. Was college a worse alternative than becoming a strung out porn star?? Amazingly, many of the porn execs, photographers, coke dealers aren't depicted in a seedy light. The film starts in 1981, but Lee's attire is pretty much late 80s stuff (torn, tight Guess jeans), and the soundtrack is right out of the 1970s (Fleetwood Mac, Frampton). It's a sad story, but throughout the whole thing, you just want the lead character to get a freaking clue!

Not as good as its predecessor...
19 May 2008
This is not a bad film, but compared to 2006's "Hills Have Eyes," it comes across as a little predictable. Plenty of "Don't go in there!" and "What are you thinking?" moments. The mutants are pretty creepy, but not as scary as the ones in the preceding film. And unlike the first film, the characters are pretty contrived. While the 2006 "Hills" featured a family that the audience could actually relate to, this movie features all of the clichéd horror characters (the smart, logical male, female protagonists; the cocky jerks). The concept is still eerie, but this one is even more unsettling as the mutants are seeking females for breeding. If that wasn't gross enough, there's a brief but still awful rape scene. Honestly, I think the threat of such an act is scary enough but to actually show it happening is unsettling even for a horror film. The same thing kind of affected my opinion of the 2006 "Hills."

Still awesome!
4 May 2008
I saw this film over 20 years ago and thought it was pretty funny back then. The one thing that always stuck in my mind was that the actress who played Ducky was one of the hot ZZ Top video babes. It was on cable the other day, and I was surprised at how much I still liked this. Pretty harmless R-rated fun with lots of nudity, drinking and drugs. A nice flashback to the early 80s when party films like this ruled the drive-in circuit. Watching it now is not unlike watching those old Frankie/Annette films. Tons of dumb humor, plenty of outlandish characters and a cheesy soundtrack make this appealing even to snobs who think they're above such low budget fare.

What did Rick do to deserve this role?
29 April 2008
My wife is a HUGE Rick Springfield fan, so we watched this on Lifetime recently. I love B flicks as much as the next person, and this low budget romantic-thriller is as cheaply made as they come. Despite the Parisian setting, it's apparent that this was not made in France. All of the scenes featuring Paris landmarks are pretty much stock footage, but that's only a minor glitch in this predictable movie. The plot is fairly improbable: A scholar switches places with her fashion model twin and heads to Paris, then gets involved in mystery/romance/blackmail. I've never read a Harlequin novel, but am assuming that this is pretty much the standard formula. Surprisingly, the movie didn't even have any Rick Springfield music! Perhaps his songs were too expensive to use on the soundtrack. Who knows? It's bad stuff but perhaps Rick fans might enjoy.

Hammer rules!!!
29 April 2008
Okay, this is a VERY low budget thriller. It makes Williamson's 1970s B-films look like "Ben Hur," but if you're a fan of the Hammer, you might find some enjoyment in this Italian import. I picked up the entire Black Cobra series at Big Lots for three bucks, and this first installment is bad, but tolerable. Williamson is a tough cop who rubs nearly everyone the wrong way...except for his cat, Pervis. A gang of not-so-tough looking bikers terrorize the city, and a key witness to one of their murders has the good luck of being in Williamson's custody. Of course, anyone can figure out the rest. The movie looks like it was filmed on the cheapest film stock that was ever produced, and the synth soundtrack is right out of the John Carpenter book of film scores. Still, Hammer is the Hammer. Williamson is not the best actor but he manages to breathe life into this pile of cheese.

Still Awesome
14 April 2008
This came out about the same time as the "official" Night of the Living Dead sequel "Day of the Dead." As much as I like George Romero, this film is way better than "Day of the Dead." Much more action, a better story and scarier zombies make this a worthy effort. Not to mention, this film is FUN. Okay, I like horror films with a message, but it's nice to have a nice balance of humor and gore...something missing from contemporary films like "Hostel" and "The Hills Have Eyes." After more than 20 years, it can hold its own against recent zombie efforts like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, "Resident Evil" and "Land of the Dead." Plus, the punk rock soundtrack adds a nice touch. Good performances from everyone involved, but the real star is the slithering zombie that emerges from the chemical vat...still creepy after all these years.

Great 70s Action Flick
14 April 2008
This film might not be as popular as its predecessor "Black Caesar," but "Hell Up in Harlem" is far more explosive. This movie was my introduction to Fred "the Hammer" Williamson, and it's one of his best movies. Not much of a story, but the action level is awesome. Plus, this movie is far less preachy and depressing than "Black Caesar." Great supporting roles played by Durville Martin and Julius Harris, and a cool theme song by Edwin "War" Starr. Action highlights include the opening chase scene (which pretty much disregards the first film's bleak conclusion), the island shootout and of course the hard to believe NYC to L.A. chase! If you're new to the Hammer, start with this movie. It's definitely his best.

Awesome!
31 March 2008
I had never heard of this film before I saw it on cable. Because it was based on the work of the great Moebius, I thought I would check it out and was pretty amazed. This is a great psychedelic western with cool effects and great acting, particularly from the lead hero and heavy. Some scenes were a little confusing and the narrative seemed a little awkward. Still, this is a cool film that will surprise many people. I am surprised that more people have not made this a cult film on the level of a "Donnie Darko." The movie really picks up steam as it heads to a final confrontation between Cassel and Madsen, and this is the best thing that Juliette Lewis has done in years. Highly recommended.

Better than most contemporary horror flicks
24 March 2008
I am not a fan of the trendy torture-shock flicks like "Hostel" or "Saw." This kind of film is far more entertaining yet still pretty gross. Many of the plot points are pretty derivative of previous shockers like "The Faculty," "Night of the Creeps," "The Thing," etc. It's a nice, fast-paced gross-out horror flick. Not for the weak of stomach, "Slither" does rely too much on gore, but the tone is actually much lighter than so many other 21st century horror films. The comedy segments are well balanced with the film's disturbing elements, but seeing decapitated dogs takes away from the fun. Michael Rooker is definitely creepy as the old rich guy with a young wife, and equally weird is the use of Air Supply (!) during a love scene. This isn't a classic, but worth a late night cable watch...but not while you're eating.

Disappointing...
24 March 2008
Fans of Man-Thing comics will be disappointed. Likewise, horror buffs will be let down too. The story takes a little too long to unfold. Plus, the film doesn't even show the Man-Thing until toward the end of the film. I was willing to accept that the creature's origin was changed drastically from the comic version, but I definitely wanted to see more of the monster. Some scenes seem reminiscent of "Wendigo" with quick montages of nature footage interspersed with out of focus POV shots. Oddly, for a film that takes place in a swamp, there are no snakes or alligators present. Characters wade in murky waters without fear of any natural predators. Plus, everyone seems to only go into the swamp at night! Wouldn't it be easier and safer to conduct an investigation during the daytime???? Not totally awful, but it could have been much better.

Not perfect, but not bad
3 March 2008
I saw this about 20 years back when it was released on video, and just caught it recently on HBO. It's pretty hokey, but I find this tongue-in-cheek piece more enjoyable than today's brand of sadistic-horror films. Of course, any horror movie with a juvenile as the main protagonist might be a little watered down, but this installment of the ROTLD series is still worth catching. The zombie make-up is a little dated by today's standards, and I kept wondering why they were so slow! In the first film, they ran after victims and were pretty fast. Good comic relief from James Karen (essentially playing the role he played in the first film) and Philip Bruns as Doc Mandel (kind of a drunken version of Back to the Future's Doc character). Not as intense as recent zombie offerings like "Dawn of the Dead" or "28 Days Later," but worth a look,

The worst Gen-X film ever
19 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this shortly after graduating from college. I must say that I was pretty embarrassed to be a part of the generation that the film sought to characterize. There are numerous misconceptions about Gen-X and "Bites" pretty much captures all of them. For one, I can say that few twenty-somethings in the 90s celebrated Shaun Cassidy, "Good Times," Frampton, "Planet of the Apes," and Schoolhouse Rock with as much zeal as the dunderhead characters in this film. In fact, many of the Gen-Xers I was friends would sneer at the thought of listening to "Frampton Comes Alice" and damn sure would not know who Dr. Zaius was. Likewise, most twenty-somethings were either jamming to Alice in Chains or even Snoop's first album instead of going nuts to the Knack. Yes, Gen-Xers helped make "retro" stuff hip again, BUT such music, films and so on were only cool because stupid films like this pushed pop culture references down everyone's throats. In reality, however, some of the stereotypes presented in the film are true. I did know several people like Winona Ryder's character who graduated from college with little focus, little talent and not flexibility to make it in the professional world. And Ethan Hawke's depiction of an oh so ironic, chain smoking slacker was not untypical of some of the era's lost souls. Inaccurate or accurate, it's still a frustrating mess and its ridiculous conclusion only leaves the audience frustrated and furious.

Great concert film
17 November 2007
I've seen the Stones four times. Awesome show each time, but they pretty much play the same stuff the same way (Sympathy for the Devil, Satisfaction, etc.). This bare bones concert film captures the bands at its peak, playing a wide range of material and making each song sound as fresh as ever. The opener "Under My Thumb" is a rocker and the film's version of "Miss You" is pure raw funk with great sax line. Tons of songs from "Some Girls" and a mish mash of hits from the 60s and 70s. Also interesting is to see a stadium concert filmed at a time when big screen video screens were a rarity. A must-see for any Stones fan, and definitely worth the time of a casual enthusiast of the band.

Not as good as "WKRP"
12 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
In some ways, this films seems to be a blueprint for the sit-come "WKRP," but it's just not quite as good. For one, the music selected for the soundtrack (save of course for the great Steely Dan title track) is middle of the road white man's rock...Ronstadt, Buffett, etc. While the audience is supposed to cheer for the charismatic jocks as they fight the "man," it's hard not to roll one's eyes at the script. Eileen Brennan plays Mother, a burnt out jock who wants to see what life is like when she's not on an "ego trip for five hours a night". Give me a break. Like DJing at the hottest L.A. station is such a grind! Then, the Ronstadt concert is broadcast live on the air at the last minute!!! Logistically and legally, this is impossible. The message is not to sell out, which isn't a bad statement. When you consider the alternatives, however, how can one NOT sell out? What harm would come of running a few lame commercials as opposed to losing a job playing rock n' roll? As mentioned, the only positive thing about FM is that probably had a hand in spawning "WKRP" (the Dugan and Prince of Darkness characters are pretty much carbon copies of Andy Travis and Venus Fly Trap).

Not perfect, but still great.
2 August 2007
HST purists may scoff, but this movie still holds its own. Not as dark as "Fear and Loathing..." but way more fun, this is a great party movie. In a way, its aimlessness reflects the early 70s era and Murray's performance is pretty hilarious. Not sure if there was any of his patented improvising, but he's pretty off the wall (washing his sneakers in a public bathroom and disrobing while talking to Nixon?). There's no real plot, just random adventure of HST with reocurring visits from Peter Boyle as the radically liberal Lazlo. I remember that "Fear and Loathing..." generated a ton of hype, but this film better captures the drunken spirit of HST and his tales.

Where's the music???
8 December 2006
Watching a documentary about a rock band, I was expecting to see more archival concert footage or hear more music. There are only two concert segments -- both feature covers: Velvet Underground's 'Rock n Roll' and Troggs' 'Wild Thing'. The incidental music backing the interview segments sounds like something out of "Twin Peaks." Perhaps this type of score was selected to enhance the seedy backstory of these girls who were eaten alive and spit out by an unmerciful music industry.

This film is really for fans only. Anyone who doesn't know the backstory of the Runaways might end up confused or bored. But for true Runaways-maniacs, the interviews are quite revealing.

Perfectly reflects the 70s-80s transition
20 January 2006
This movie perfectly reflects the transition from the carefree 1970s to the conservative 80s. Hippy-dippy trends meet yuppie realism. Cults, drugs, orgies, vegetarianism, pop psychiatry, hot tubs and disco are targets of the jokes. The result is pretty funny but may seem a little dated. A deadpan Martin Mull is great in the lead and the supporting bits by Topmmy Smothers, Christopher Lee, Sally Kellerman and Bill Macy are good too. But what's up with that lame theme song at the end? Tons of nudity...including Kellerman and Tuesday Weld! In any event, the film is definitely a flashback for many, and might be a good history lesson for younger viewers.
