This series does NOT focus on the moments before death or the psychology
5 October 2022
The series on its own is decent, 7/10. What I found missing from the series is an exploration of why John Wayne Gacy did what he did, what he felt about and during his destructive actions, and what he did to his victims other than murder them. The series felt incomplete.

This series deserves a one point deduction for misrepresenting what it is about, so it gets a 6/10 from me. The series appears to focus on the murderer confessing about his crimes: what he did, why he did it and what he felt. In actuallity, the series focuses more on the events around his arrest and trial, and what the people involed with those events thought and felt.

To give you an impression of my taste, these are some series I have rated highly in the past: 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners', 'The Sandman', 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Only watched episode 1
2 October 2022
The characters didn't seem to act intelligently or realistically in the first episode. For example, the protagonist kept trying to escape a magic barrier, but all the attempts were focused on one place in the barrier. Why would she not try to break the barrier in other spots? I don't think focusing exclusively on one area was part of a joke.

The first episode had a lot of wasting time. It was obvious many times that a joke was being made. But I found none of the jokes funny, and usually they didn't contribute to the story. Some songs also didn't seem to give (much) new information, and I didn't enjoy the singing enough to want songs for the sake of having songs.

I've read through most of the other reviews, and no one has convinced me that this series gets better after episode 1, nor have I read a good explanation why this series is good in general (apart from praising the songs).

Season 1 and 2: good, not great. Suspenseful, not fullfilling. (Season 4 disappointing)
29 September 2022
The quality of first two seasons is good, and not great. The series has a strong start (episodes 1-4), and from episode 5 or 6 becomes plagued by mediocrity. My score for the first two seasons is 8/10.

The two seasons have a lot of suspense and action, and overall not much deep character work, emotion or story. (I am someone who seeks inspiration, wisdom, beauty and emotion in fictional works.) Its emotionally deepest story thread 'individual against society' is very good, and there is not enough of it in the series. The series made me want to keep watching to know what happens next and to find out the answer to all the mysteries, while the journey to those goals itself wasn't full filling enough.

While I liked a couple of the characters, and was invested in the one who had to 'fight society', I found most of the characters not very likeable. Many of them took seemingly 'stupid' actions or sometimes acted disrespectfully towards others. This sometimes made me not care about the fate of the characters. It also made slice of life scenes less interesting to watch.

I expect seasons 3 and 4 to be entertaining. I do not expect them to be fulfilling. So I do not feel motivated to watch them.

Edit: I have watched seasons 3 and 4 now. My score for the whole show went down from 8/10 to 7/10.

Season 4 isn't as great as everyone seems to say it is. I kept waiting for season 4 to get good, but it never did. While the final episode is interesting, I didn't find it good enough to make the season worth finishing. This season there is even more action than before and even less mystery. There is also a lot of slice of life. It was a painful watch for someone who was looking for a deep or astonishing story. If you are someone without high expectations, who enjoys action scenes, and who is invested in the characters or loves them, you might enjoy this season.

On the other hand, season 3 isn't as bad as people say it is. I think it is better than season 2, because characters act less stupid, and the plot felt more concise. It's not great either, but it's solid entertainment.

My ranking: Season 1 > season 3 > season 2 > season 4.

Someone who disliked Arcane
23 September 2022
I don't feel the need to break down what is good about a 10/10 series. The reviewers here were right about the series. I don't know what to add to the other reviews besides that someone like me liked it:

As someone who disliked Arcane, and who is not a fan of futuristic hyper violent pessimistic anime settings, I was a bit wary that I might dislike this series, again contrary to popular opinion. If you are going to watch a TV series anyway, don't make the mistake of skipping this anime. Get hyped.

I'm giving a perfect score despite the subtitles being unreadable sometimes against a white background.

I had no knowledge of the franchise going into the series.

To give you an impression of my taste, these are some series I have rated highly in the past: 'The Sandman', 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

The first six episodes are fun (8/10)
22 September 2022
After reading some reviews here, I started my watch expecting the series to be not that good and not taking it seriously. With this attitude, and skipping some parts if the first episode, the first six episodes were actually fun to me. I give them a rating of a solid 8/10.

What makes those episodes good? Mostly because the story seems light hearted and genuine.

Some more details what I like about those episodes:
  • Because it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously it can be funny on occassion.

  • The acting can be fun to watch, maybe because the actors seem to be enjoying their role or maybe because the acting is a good.

  • There are some likeble characters

Episodes 7-10 are not worth watching, because the story and characters stop making sense. Maybe I would give them a rating of 5/10.

I would say you can stop watching at the end of episode 6 and feel okay doing so.

Not a One Piece movie and more a movie about One Piece
20 September 2022
The purpose of this message is to temper expectations and to reduce disappointment, so that the viewer can enjoy the movie for what it is.

I think this movie is not really a One Piece movie: it does not capture what the manga or TV series is about or their spirit, and does not capture what makes them good or what people read and watch them for. It makes mistakes in areas that the series excels in and does things that are unprecedented in the series. It is instead a movie about One Piece, or a One Piece themed movie. I think you should see it as a 'fan made movie' or perhaps a 'fan service movie' or a film maker's (who is not Eiichiro Oda) original take on One Piece.

Since the movie is for 'fans' of One Piece and since it is not a 'One Piece quality' movie, I think generally speaking people unfamiliar with One Piece should not watch this movie.

I think the movie is still worth watching for those interested in the movie. What I found enjoyable in the movie are the very fantastic and beautiful songs and accompanying visuals in the movie, the original ideas or the original take on a One Piece movie, and the interesting and powerful set up or start. I would have rated this movie an 8 if the marketing surrounding this movie didn't present it as anywhere near canon or authentic.

Expect cringe AND enjoyment (at the same time). This is a movie you do not want to be canon in any way, because the way familiar characters act in this movie sometimes appears unrealistic or at least questionable. Perhaps the right expectation is to expect a nonsensical spectacle, because my constant cringing in the second half of the movie did lessen my enjoyment quite a lot. If I knew in advance that this movie was not to be taken seriously, I would have been more mentally prepared for this movie.

To give you an impression of what kind of person I am, these are some series I have rated highly in the past: 'The Sandman', 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Imaginative. I actually support representing the underrepresented
9 August 2022
I feel compelled to write this review, because the 'most helpful' reviews seem mostly very negative about the series, despite the average score of 8 that the series has, which almost discouraged me to not watch the series.

I have not read the source material.

Simply put, the show is worth considering because it is very imaginative. Also, I think the characters generally carry themselves in a believable way. I actually think that it deserves an 8 rather than a 9, but I am giving it a 9 because I personally like its unique an fantastical themes surrounding deities or gods and the different major elements of the human condition (dreams, death, desire, devil, etc.).

To give you a sense of my taste I am listing some shows that I have rated highly: 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Now finally about the race swapping and gender swapping and the LGBT+ over representation that people complain about. The race swapping and gender swapping doesn't bother me because I do not know the source material.

I acknowledge that the number of gay relations in the show is 'unnatural'. However, that is justified in my mind because in other shows the number of hetero relationships is over represented. (Do you also complain if in 9/10 shows or movies all people seem to be hetero sexual?) So having some shows over represent gayness helps balance things out. And ultimately whether relationships are gay or heterosexual doesn't matter much to me.

People call this representing of underrepresented people 'political' as if it is a bad thing. I don't understand why it is political (instead of moral) and I don't think it matters to me whether it is really political. I do know that deliberately representing underrepresented people makes the world a better place. I think it is better to over do it, than to do it too less. So I hope Netflix keeps deliberately representing underrepresented people.

Mediocre anime full of tropes or cliche
3 April 2022
I've watched over 80 episodes of this anime after hearing a Youtuber praise it highly, saying that its tournament arc is the best ever. (And I've probably checked IMDB before deciding to watch it.) I was utterly disappointed.

The anime is slow and mediocre. There is nothing special about it compared to other anime available in 2022. And it just isn't that good. It feels very cliche, full of tropes, predictable, etc.

Sure, the anime isn't necessarily bad, and it has good qualities: it has heart, likeable characters, a plot that flows, and has creativity or originality. My goal here is not to give an accurate evaluation of the anime, but to warn everyone that this anime doesn't live up to the hype (it is rated 8,5 on IMDB right now).

I've rated the anime a 6, but it might deserve a 7. Maybe the 8.5 is deserved because the anime was very good for its time, but nonetheless this anime is one you can skip without missing out.

Some series or movies I have rated highly: 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Make no mistake, even the first two seasons are not good
29 December 2021
I have only watched the first two seasons, and have watched them fully

Normally I would have been reluctant to watch a show which has an average rating of 7,5 here (as of now), but I have read several reviews here saying that the first two seasons are very good and that the third and fourth season are very bad, so I thought that the first two seasons might be worth much higher than 7,5. As you can see from my rating, I thought wrong.

The show isn't bad, but it is also not good. And if you have high standards, want shows to be worth your time, and want to get something out of watching one, then yes this show is bad.

The characters seem to act inconsistently, their actions seem unbelievable sometimes, and at times their actions seem stupid.

Overall the story doesn't seem to be well thought out: regularly I find myself wondering 'but what about X? X could save the day.' The story feels empty. There is too little depth, too little emotional impact, too little insight in human nature, etc. The show feels like it is mostly just a story without any significance: Sabrina woke up, fought a demon, found a boy friend, went to a book shop, went to bed, went to school again, saved a friend, broke up with a boy friend, etc.

The first majority of season 1 was decent and might be worth an 8, but its final parts were painful to watch. Someone here has written that 'season 1 is dark and good and season 2 is even darker and better'. Well, I found season 2 worse than season 1. (And yes gruesome things happen, but the overall tone of the story doesn't seem that dark. The story doesn't dwell on tragic events and characters move on from them quickly.)

If you content with just distracting yourself and following along a story, I guess these first two seasons would do.

Other series or movies I have rated highly: 'Violet Evergarden', 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Not recommended (comparable to the OVA and the 2018 movie)
15 December 2021
I have rated the main series a 10, and the OVA, the 2018 movie and this 2020 movie a 6. (The 2020 movie feels less like filler compared to the other two, and I am willing to rate it a 7 instead of a 6.)

The 2020 is 'bad'. There are different things I can mention that are bad. For example: the side stories aren't compelling and don't contribute to Violet's personal growth. The 'main plot' seems kind of cliche and not compelling either. I felt bored. Another example: there are many repeated flashback scenes straight from the main series, and some flashbacks are even repeated multiple times in the movie.

The movie provides closure to some plot points from the main series. I feel like that closure isn't needed. And that it isn't provided in a (very) satisfying way in this movie anyway.

Season two much worse than season one (comments on seasons two)
14 November 2021
The 6 is for seasons one and two combined. Maybe I could give a 7 too.

Maybe you are hoping that season two is even better than season one. Season two is a big mess. It is substantially worse than season one. It has a few great moments, but is that enough reason to watch 13 episodes?

It seems like the creators didn't plan the show right and improvised on the go.

Perhaps the rushed and underwhelming way that the final conflict of season one was concluded in episode one of the second season was telling of how new conflicts in season two would be wrapped up.

Is season two entertaining? Maybe. Sure, I guess. Worth watching? Definitely not if you want to spend your time in a valuable way. You can go ahead and watch it if you don't mind 'mere mediocre enjoyment'. I guess maybe you could be lucky and pick up a few inspiring ideas (of wisdom) that the show sprinkles in.

Cringe movie has few powerful ideas
31 October 2021
The movie has a few interesting ideas, and perhaps for that would be worth watching. There isn't much more than that I think.

The level of intelligence of the characters seems so low that parts of the movie are painful to watch (cringe). This partly ruins the movie.

Good quality and praiseworthy, but not great
17 August 2021
About me: series or movies I have rated highly (9 or higher) : 'Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song ', 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

It's a good quality show throughout all five seasons. It is fair and doesn't abuse cheap cliffhangers. It doesn't stall or use filler; it gets straight to the point. It manages to make sense throughout. It engages you as the characters make questionable and difficult choices throughout, challenging you as a viewer to make a judgment or form an opinion on their choices.

However, if I reflect on the show, the characters somehow feel unbelievable, and the story also somehow feels the same. Because of this 'not quite right', 'not quite realistic' feeling, the show feels a bit hollow.

It has some moments when the show seems to approach 'epicness' and 'greatness', but it rarely seems to reach those qualities. (The final episodes are very good, I can give you that.) There is a lot of tension and excitement throughout the series, but not many moments that 'shake you to the core' if you consider the number of episodes.

For these reasons, I am inclined to say that the show is 'skippable'.

One bonus advantage of the show is that it seems to make you familiar with the (under)world of drugs, and the mentality of the actors involved.

The show might deserve a 9, but I will be cautious and rate it with an 8 instead.

Conclusion: worth the watch if you are looking for a good, enjoyable, intelligent enough, and adrenaline pumping TV series to watch. But this is not the best choice if you want to watch the best show or a 'great show'. Also it is not a 'must watch'.

Excuse me for not describing what makes this anime great or what kind of person I am
3 August 2021
I have watched episodes 1-13. The anime feels like a masterpiece, or at least it made me think 'is this a masterpiece'?

Why is it so good? Maybe because underneath the surface it is intelligent, wise, and moral (instead of ending on cliff hangers, the episode ends in a way that makes you feel satisfied or fulfilled).

If you will watch an anime, or even just a tv series, anyway, please watch this.

Other series or movies I have rated highly: 'Great Pretender', 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

Suspenseful, with a few cool plottwist, but ultimately unsatisfying and not a must see
7 February 2021
I lost my motivation to continue watching after few episodes, but picked it back up after reading someone's recommendation. The show indeed got better, and it was suspenseful and hard to stop watching. There was a cool plot twist. I thought the show was going somewhere, but as it was nearing the end, the story did not seem to go anywhere worth going. It was neatly wrapped up, but the story or mystery was ultimately unsatisfying. The show was mystery, suspense and intrigue, but behind all of that isn't anything fulfilling. One merit is that it was kind of fun to theorize what happened as little pieces of information about 'what happened' get revealed on a consistent basis. I felt unfulfilled and disappointed as I was nearing the end of the show, and after finishing it.

Skippable, although watchable if you have moderate expectations. The production quality is fine. There is interpersonal drama. It has originality. It is enjoyable.

To give you an idea of my taste, I loved: the shows 'Messiah', 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', and the movies 'Interstellar' and 'Arrival'.

High quality, intelligent, fullfilling
26 January 2021
This series is very good.

To give you an idea of my taste: some of the TV series or movies that I love are 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', 'Arrival', and 'Interstellar'.

I suspect it was high quality and intelligent because I did not notice things such as cheap tricks, unbelievable behaviour, empty filler, and meaningless suspense. It was fullfilling to watch as it focused on characters, motivations emotions, etc. The directing (camera and sound work) was good: there were times were I could relate well to certain scenes as if I were there. The story is intriguing: you want to know what happens next due to the unusual yet 'worldly' events.

Warning: you may feel the urge to keep watching once you start.

Terrible final three episodes and not a must watch overall
23 December 2020
The first five episodes were decent. Some 'unnatural' parts were tolerable by keeping in mind this was originally a graphic novel.

The final three episodes were painful to go though and were terrible. The flaws include: actions that are not believable, flashbacks or scenes that are being repeated in the exact way, unnecessary flashbacks (for minor characters), unnecessary fight scenes (between minor characters).

The quality of the final three episodes made me drop two stars from what I would have rated the series based on the first five episodes. Overall, the story contains a lot of murder, is not very deep or inspiring, and is not a must watch.

Maybe you can watch only the first five episodes, but the story does make you curious what happens next.

To give you an idea of my taste: some of the TV series or movies that I love are 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Dark', 'Arrival', and 'Interstellar'.

All over the place, no coherent story and unsatisfying
10 December 2020
Sure, the quality is there: animation and creativity. But the plot is all over the place. Seemingly random stuff happens. There does not seem to be any overarching story that is being focused on. So it has been an unsatisfying experience. I just wanted to finish the story already, hoping for some fulfilling stuff that never came.

Sure the characters are likeable enough, but they don't do anything meaningful that reveals who they really are. The interaction between the characters is friendly sure, but does not go very deep.

To give you an idea of my taste: some of the TV series or movies that I love are 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Beastars', 'Arrival', 'Interstellar'.

Good quality and wholesome, with a theme of holding back your true power or nature
10 December 2020
This is a good quality anime, which I loved because the theme of holding back or suppressing your true power or nature resonated with me. Fast paced enough. Also wholesome anime that touches on virtue and deals with the theme of love. I also liked the fantasy setting of the show, which is a human like society with a twist.

Season 1 review: positive 'wholesome' enjoyable adventure anime that doesn't shock the mind, but might touch the heart
17 November 2020
To give you an idea of my taste: some of the TV series or movies that I love are 'The OA', 'Sense8', 'Dark', 'Arrival', 'Interstellar'.

Prior to watching the series, I have read from a few reviews here that if you like the likes of 'Naruto' and 'Bleach' you are sure to like this one, and that its story telling rivals that of 'One Piece'. I have found this series too be less emotional, impactful, inspiring and memorable compared to those series. The strength of this series compared to those however, is its positive (and light hearted) tone, virtuous main characters and the 'wholesomeness' of the (frequently communicated) friendship between them.

This series was enjoyable to me. It is a decent choice if you are looking for some distraction or 'escape' and are in for a fun and light hearted adventure. Some of the fun parts of the series are the cool characters, the friendship between the characters, cool looking fights, and the fantasy aspect.

Its value for me included: the series can lighten your mood and make you relax. The characters could motivate you to be a more loving person. Its weaknesses to me included: apart from a couple of touching and beautiful scenes, stories or moments, the TV series didn't contain much that seems very original, fascinating, thought provoking, deep, or very exciting.

Depressing but pretty good at the horror aspect
25 September 2020
If you are looking for a horror show because you want to feel scared and want creepy vibes, than this series does more than a decent job.

If you are looking for entertainment and not specifically horror(and maybe even if you are looking specifically for horror), I would not recommend this because :
  • I found it quite depressesing (with an few episodes being exceptions)
  • a number of episodes did not seem to contain anything good, special or fullfilling
  • the series did not seem to contain anything profound or inspiring, with a few exceptions such as episode 3 or maybe if you are specifically interested in the theme of death
(- the resolution of the mystery was not rewarding to me)

The first three episodes are worth watching, if you can then let go of the need to watch the rest, perhaps with the knowledge that the resolution of the mystery of the house was not very satisfying to me anyway.

This recommendation was based on how the series made me feel. I am well aware that this series is a qualitatively good series. It does a number of things very well such as technically wise. (The rating of 7 reflects more on how much I enjoyed the series than what it would deserve based on its quality.)

Season 1: Dissapointing. Great start and premise, much 'filler' and much dumb character action in the rest of the season
9 August 2020
I have watched all of and only season 1. This will not be a balanced review, but instead, i will mostly warn you not to watch (most of) the season and give my reasons for that.

I recommend watching episodes 1 and 2 and skipping the rest of the season. The first two episodes were amazing. They were so good! The premise is amazing too.

The rest of the season is plagued with first: very many slow, unnecessary, predictable and uninteresting scenes. While the first two episodes were packed full of story, the rest of the season had many to me uninteresting minor character specific conflicts, a predictable main conflict, and was overall lacking story (that impresses).

Second, the season is abundant with many of the characters making dumb or unintelligent decisions, which made the story harder for me to believe and left me frustrated many times.

You might decide to watch the whole show anyway because: you like superheroes using superpowers. Well: the characters do not act like heroes, and you won't get to enjoy seeing powers used in interesting ways. Maybe you like to watch a team of superheroes: well, the characters unfortunately don't act as a team for a big part of the season. Maybe you like the theme of time travel: well, there is nothing interesting about the way time travel is used in the story. It is mostly used as a plot device, so I would not call this a story about time travel or a time travel story. Maybe you like the idea of exploring what it is like to live a regular life while having superpowers: While this topic is being touched, I do not think this is what the story is about.

They could have done so much more and so very different things given the powerful premise. I was hoping the show would surprise me and reward me with a great conclusion of the season, but the show does not substantially improve in its final part. I still give the show a 7 for a great premise, for the excellent first two episodes, and for a couple of figuratively beautiful scenes, including at least one in the final episode.

5 episodes 'review': lacking substance

Some of the reviews here have inspired me to give the series a try. It sounded like a series you could fall in love with. I have watched five episodes and I am disappointed.

The series is decent and seems to have a heart, especially in the beginning. However, it seems to lack intelligence and depth. It was too much 'adventure of the day' for my taste, lacking substance. The episodes did not inspire me, amaze me, make me think about the world, or let me connect to the characters deeply. I need more than just 'story'.

The episodes that I have seen were enjoyable and occasionally annoying for me to watch.
