Sha Na Na (1977)
So good...
I loved this show and I always will.
I refuse to die before I get the episodes on DVD, especially the one where the Ramones guest star. Oh man, how frickin' cool is that. One thing that is rarely mentioned in rock trivia is the fact that SHa Na Na, of all bands, influenced punk rock, even today you can hear the style of what they did in pop-punk. Essentially, the took a standard song and sped it up and that's what the Ramones did (and they all dressed like Bowzer haha!!!) OK, so they really influenced me.
They had some really fine original songs too, in addition to the re-vamped oldies, and since they were 'hippies' and spoke ill of president Nixon *gasp* they will always be cool, as long as war and hatred rage across this planet. This fact makes my Sha Na Na cover band, Baa Na Na (started way back when I was too young to see the irony) something I will be forever proud of.
Grease for Peace!! (more than ever)
Bloodsport (1988)
It's a guy thing...
It's good wholesome violence, it's the violence you pretend when you are playing war as a kid, in fact the whole movie is kinda catered to that age when your male friends are more important to you than finding a girlfriend but you do appreciate girls and want to have them because you are not gay but that camaraderie with your male friends is the key to fun and happiness.
The movie is really perfect for the genre, you have the hero who you know will win in the end because he is fighting to honor the guy who made him a hero, you have the friend who will be there 'anytime anyplace etc' and will kick any lamers ass for you and say convincingly 'I'm not your pal' to them, you have the villain, not an evil villain, but a real asshole who you just want to see go down for the pure satisfaction of it all, and you have a girl, of course, gotta throw one in there or the movie would be a real sausage fest and this was 1988, no room for any homosexual talk, so Dux has to have sex with her, on the biggest night of his life, and she even lays a guilt trip on him, so like girls uggh, and then she is there with some rich dude, trying to get attention when you're trying to power up the dim-mok, oh well, she will be yours after you win.
and you gotta love the fact it was filmed in Hong Kong, I lived there, and I can vouch that it is all real, the scenery is hong kong and that is cool too.
Hard Core Logo (1996)
Excellent
If you listen to punk rock, especially if you listen to early 80's punk rock and are perhaps a fan of the Canadian punk band D.O.A you'll probably enjoy this movie a heck of a lot.
If you are not into that punk rock scene, you will still enjoy the drama, the pathos and the fun, it is a well made movie with believable characters and a logical plot.
I won't put a spoiler in this review but it is a fine plot that is taken from the real life of small bands who face the struggle of remaining true to their indy roots and the inevitable changes that life forces all of us to deal with.
We cannot stay the same, friendships change and sometimes it is for the better but most of the time it doesn't feel that way, we yearn for simpler times....
Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
Wonderful...
It sticks with me, such and original idea and likable characters. If you appreciate the craft of acting you'll like this movie, there is a whole range of emotions expressed but with the exception of Joe, you get only a slice of the others, but that slice is like a fine piece of cheesecake with a scandalous hint of strawberry stuff on it.
It, the movie, feels like real life when you feel like your day is being directed by fate, it feels like that weird sensation when syncronicity happens, something is said that you remember later and it suddenly doesn't sound random any more.
Definitely the best romantic movie I have ever seen.
Tracks (1976)
Utterly crap-full
So bad it feels like it is a mini-series in length but little happens at all, endless shots of Hopper looking out the window but no real clues on anything except maybe that he has gone nuts, his mind is as blank as the script.
The girl was a nice hippy chick but why would she find a burned out Vietnam vet attractive? maybe in the 70's women were docile creatures I dunno but it really seemed like the love interest was just thrown in there to not have the movie be a sausage fest.
The last scene was unexpected, wow he's a psycho after all! but not entertaining. If you like Dennis Hopper you'll survive this movie but it is honestly horrid...
Tapeheads (1988)
One of my all time favorites
First of all the movie is full of memorable quotes, I have been quoting bits and pieces of this movie since I first saw it in the late 80's. "What sort of 'production value' do you want for no money?" he he...
It's fun, hilarious, clever, poignant, hip and full of great cameo's (Don Cornelius is masterful as Moe Fuzz).
The music is top-notch too, gotta love 'Roscoes rap' by King Cotton and the Swanky Modes are great. We used to play this album on college FM radio back in the day when there WAS college FM radio.
Kudos to director, Mike "Woolhat" Blessing (ok so the Monkees TV show was in re-runs when this movie came out! check out "Head" for another overlooked classic!
