Lost in Space (1965–1968)

How I loved this as a child
6 December 2023
Dr who was on at the time and although quite scary with the daleks, cybermen and later the ice warriors, it was obviously cheaply made . Lost in Space however was made in colour ( apart from early episodes) had a great score from the later very famous John Williams of Spielberg movies. To my young eyes the aliens and creatures encountered, seemed so real and the wonderful Dr Smith and the Robot stole each episode. Poor william always wandering into peril, oblivious of Dr Smith's cowardly intentions. I bought the box sets and obviously very dated now , I still enjoy them . Lots of good tv came out of America around then and later with , Batman, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea , Time Tunnel . Ahhhh nostalgia sigh !!

Classic Vincent Price
5 December 2023
A truly gothic 60's masterpiece . Mr Price is brilliantly cast and produces his trademark performance of suitably effective facial expressions in response to the gradually revealing plot. Certainly younger viewers may laugh at the storyline and its dated narrative but for me it is a true classic of it's time . I love the intriguing story and effective music score , with shadows cast in every scene to play on your subconscious and what may jump out at any moment . The creative genius of edgar Allen Poe's writing makes this an obvious adaptation. Perhaps I should seek out a box set of Vincent Price movie's?

Awful
5 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I had a suspicion about this but agreed to watch it with my wife. Wow where do I start ? The couple next door live across the street. Apparently only 7 people live in the street as nobody ever comes out of their houses even when a motorbike is ridden around late at night. Where two police officers have so much time on their hands , they can steal two police bikes and work for a local crime boss ? The extremely sensitive warehouse owned by said crime boss is left unlocked and unattended. When aforementioned crime boss is exposed of millions of pound in fraud , a single police officer is sent to arrest him. The central female characters father shoots a complete stranger in the woods and then simply disappears until the end . The professional sharpshooter ( killed by the father ) decides it's better to stand and not lean against a tree when aiming for his target. I can't believe that money was provided to fund this utterly awful series.

Vertigo overload
23 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've parachuted from a plane but I'm not great with heights. I have to say i found it quite difficult to watch this movie . There are elements of the film Cliffhanger and a nice little plot twist towards the end . Certainly alot of tension is generated and the cgi is brilliantly done with quite spectacular scenery. Some of the elements of the movie seem silly , such as why would the public be able to gain access to the base of the tower . Also surely thrill seekers would at least assess a structure before climbing it ? Probably many freeclimbers will criticise it but I suppose you have to exercise some poetic licence with any action movie Overall I enjoyed it and would watch it again.

The Innocents (1961)

Absolutely full of atmosphere and suspense.

An absolute classic. The horror films of today can shock but this film still makes you sit on the edge of your seat . One of Deborah Kerr's finest movies , with skillful application of tension and what may be revealed next by the director, Jack Clayton. For me very much in the style of the origina tv adaptation of the ' Woman in Black '. A true horror classic in that it doesn't need gore to produce shocks.

Nomadland (2020)

Thought provoking
4 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Read about the awards this film has received so thought I'd give it try. Its beautifully shot and acted. It seems like the cast were actually living the film rather than acting it. Some lovely analogies on life and the nomad society was almost presented as a religion . I did find it quite depressing and found it difficult to like the central character. Although the argument about why we spend all our lives in dept and only have a few years mortgage free before we die , was good one. All in all thought provoking, focusing on those who choose not to, or are forced to live on the road. Over all I did enjoy it .

Generally good but too many ' oorah's
22 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Better than expected but very gung ho with lots of oorah's in the first 2/3 of the film . Felt the film improved when the relationship between the central characters developed . There is no disputing the bravery of those who rescue others at sea but American movies always portray their heroes in this fashion. This spoils what could have been a very good film.

So similar to ' An officer and a Gentleman ' its untrue.
22 April 2021
Quite enjoyable but so much of the story is similar to an Officer and a Gentleman. The story ,incidentally is very far fetched with a developing love affair with the very gorgeous female lead character .

My wife and I just felt it was a rip off.
