Cold Mountain (2003)

Not Everything It Was Made Out To Be - But Good.
12 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is one of those that was built up just a little too much. Don't get me wrong, I did like it - but it was 2 and a half hours and some of it just didn't seem to flow as well as I thought it would.

The whole thing was touching and lovely, if a slight boring. To me other films that I have enjoyed (I won't list since this is about Cold Mountain, nothing else) which involved the characters falling in love and beating the odds have found two actors who have a lot of on-screen chemistry. So much that you just want to leap off of your chair and grab them and bang their heads together and you even get butterflies of frustration when things don't go that way.

But, Jude Law (Inman) and Nicole Kidman (Ada) just didn't give me that feeling. They're characters were too rushed it seemed and when 'that' kiss happened it was too predictable and too cheesy for a film with such a bitter under taste of death and depression.

The film picked up, though, I thought when Renée Zellweger was introduced as the charming Ruby Thewes. Her character had a lot of depth but you weren't bored to tears by her past but instead were intrigued into why she was the way she seemed but at the same time you just enjoyed her on-screen time. And also when Phillip Seymour Hoffman took up the role as the priest with his roving eye and the love for that saw I had to admit, I thought the film was getting good.

Natalie Portman, Ray Winstone, Emily Deschanel, Kathy Backer and Brendan Gleeson all took up the other roles in the film, however short, and in their own ways added some sort of attributes to it. In my opinion if it had just been a love saga without other characters we could look at, I would have been bored to tears (And I actually like those kinds of films.) And though the film was supposed to be focused on Nicole Kidman and Jude Law's characters love, I'm afraid to say that all my attention was on Renée Zellwegers characters development with Georgia and how their relationship would work. Screen chemistry is a must for me and if I can't see any then it's not worth the £15.99 I paid for it.

There were good bits in this film though, some acting (Not Jude Law's best attempt, though it has to be said he didn't have many lines), the scenery, the battle sequences and the fact we went back and forth for a while which kept my attention. What didn't keep my attention was the fact they could have told the story in 2 hours instead of boring me with other sequences that didn't need to be there.

The ending was predictable although it was raved about being "very shocking and unexpected." I felt sorry, almost, for Jude Law. He had around a page worth of lines and didn't even get a hero's ending as the poor bugger went and died. Quiet pathetically in my opinion, please don't let him die in other films. (He just can't act) I'd give it a 7/10 - and thats because I loved the Ruby character.

High School Musical (2006 TV Movie)
1/10
Oh, My, God
7 November 2006
Honestly this movie was one of the worst ever, usually Disney Channel movies are cheesy and something to watch when your heart is broken so you can laugh hysterically at the crap acting, and mimed singing, but High School Musical took the cake. The only person who could actually act was that blonde one Shirley, Sharpey, take-A-sharp-implement-and-go-to-a-desert-island. I don't care about her name, anyway..she was the only one who actually kept the movie going. It centred around basketball, a hidden in the closet singer, a preppy little girl, and a gay monstrosity of a boy. And thats just the Zac Efron character. The songs were too cheesy, so much in fact I couldn't laugh at it from sheer embarrassment for the actors. It got way too much hype for such a downfall of a movie, ask any girl and they will say they watched it for Zac Efron or Lucas wot-he-ma-called, he's not important. ask any lad, and they will say they watched it because: 1) they were grounded, 2) their girlfriend's made them, 3) they were bored, 4) it had women gyrating around or 5) they actually like the Disney channel movies and had to watch this one. Most of the Disney Channel movies have an actual storyline, this sorry to say, didn't. It had no romance going on, a kiss on the cheek? I've seen more than that in All grown Up, it had no taste in clothes, it had nothing. The songs were all spontaneous, and they sounded like karaoke at a 6 year old party. As a torture method for the older kid to eat cake. Anyway, my condolences to those actors who are now out of work.

Boy's don't cry. But this film will make you.
3 September 2006
Boys don't cry. As soon as you hear that title you realise there is something powerful behind that title, and there is. breathtakingly played by Hilary Swank, Brandon Teenas tale of being "sexually confused" is told. Her portrayal of the woman who felt as though she was a man is mind blowing and Swank grabs this role with both hands and along with Chloë Sevigny the bitter love story is born. The movie is based on true events of the brutal rape and murder of Teena Bradon (Bradon Teena) in 1993.

The hardships that Brandon (or Teena) had to deal with were captured more than perfectly by Hilary Swank, and the heartbreak and confusion of his girlfriend Lana Tisdel (Chloë Sevigny) are played with raw passion that have you gripping onto something to keep yourself from being bowled over by awe.

Kimberly Peirce directed this movie with passion, emotion and such fire that it captivates you within the first few moments. She brought the characters out so well and each acted their own part in amazing ways.

On a whole the film may make some viewers turn away or turn off with the graphic sex scene between Lana and Bradon, and the brutal rape scene towards the end of the film, violence and murder is also within this powerful movie but if you want to be stunned speechless this is the movie for you. brilliantly acted and well screen played. 10/10. Hilary Swank deserved every part of that Best Actress Award she received for the film.
