The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
Good episode, but...
It just doesn't hit as hard. I like a lot of the episodes individually, but as a whole the show just didn't develop Joel and Ellie's relationship enough. On a baseline level, this episode is a good recreation of the events of the game. However, because the viewer doesn't care as much for them as we did in the game, that ending scene just doesn't hit as hard.
I understand thinking that the more mundane moments in the game where you and Ellie are just walking around rooms looting drawers and stuff would be boring television, but those parts were instrumental in developing Joel and Ellie's relationship. Without actually feeling these characters spend this time and experience this extended ordeal together, the more heavy moments at the end don't carry the weight they should.
In the game, the giraffe scene is absolutely amazing. Joel and Ellie have gone through so much together by that point, experiencing death and hopelessness at every turn essentially, and that giraffe moment was the first time they'd seen genuine life thriving in who knows how long. In this episode, that moment just doesn't come close.
Back to the very end conversation. I think the first game's ending is one of the best endings of any piece of media ever, not just games. It's perfect. Here though, because of those reasons listed above, that weight isn't there. Not to rag on her too hard, I thought she was pretty good overall, but part of it is that Bella Ramsey's performance just doesn't come close to reaching the levels that Ashley Johnson did.
It's a good show, and it's nice to actually have a pretty good adaptation of a game. With that being said though, it still leaves a lot to be desired.
Mansfield Park (1999)
So Close...
It's actually a really great movie up until the 1:26:27 mark, then the film just falls apart. I don't know if I should blame Patricia Rozema or Jane Austen, since I have read that the film does stray away from the book in some aspects. Either way, I was left feeling disappointed.
Emma. (2020)
Wow
I'm a big Anya Taylor-Joy fan, and the trailers looked good, so i was pretty excited for this movie...and not only did it meet my high expectations, but exceeded them as well. It's pretty rare for a movie to do that. The cinematography, costume design, acting, and directing are all fantastic, and of course the dialogue is good it being a Jane Austen novel. There's very little, if anything wrong with this movie and I would highly recommend it.
Twin Peaks: The Return (2017)
Uh...episode 16 was great?
I guess based on the ratings I'm in the vast minority with my opinion here, but I didn't like this at all. And I like David Lynch. Twin peaks season 1 is great, season two has its moments. I love blue velvet and mulholland drive. But this...i don't get the hype. Not in the least. I really liked episode 16, and there a few decent parts here and there, and that's about it.
Unicorn Store (2017)
Fantastic, don't be fooled by rating
Brie Larson's directorial debut was a surprisingly fantastic movie about someone learning to accept who they are. The incredibly low rating this movie currently has is because of a bunch of angry dudes who don't like Brie Larson and don't have anything better to do than give movies that they haven't seen bad ratings. This is a film that anyone can watch and enjoy, and I definitely recommend it.
Mrs. Ashboro's Cat (2004)
Very Soild TV Movie
I only watched this because Ellen Page is in it, I wasn't expecting much at all, and it was actually surprisingly entertaining. Obviously it's a TV movie and when comparing it to theatrical films it is bad, but for what it is, it is very solid. Totally worth watching with your kids or if you're just a fan of Ellen Page like me and wanted to see her earlier work.
Flatliners (2017)
Such a missed opportunity
Ellen Page is my absolute favorite actress, and I will watch anything that she is in. If she starred in a live action Barney movie I would watch it. It is a remake, not a sequel of the 90s original, and the thing is that the original is totally a movie that could be remade. The basic plot is incredibly interesting, and it's not like the original is a great movie or anything. A remake of Flatliners really could have been something special. With that being said, Flatliners was painful to sit through. Outside of Page and maybe Diego Luna, the acting was poor, and instead of doing anything interesting with the the plot, it is the most cookie cutter cliche horror/thriller ever made. It also might be the most boring horror/thriller ever made. What makes it even worse is that SPOILERS!!!! Ellen Page dies halfway through. The most interesting character, and best actor, is killed off halfway through the film. It makes me wonder if Page realized that the film was awful, and asked to be killed off, because doing so really doesn't make sense in terms of the movie. What kind of sucks is that this again is a really interesting idea for a movie, but with how bad the film is this idea will probably never be made into a film again.
Whip It (2009)
Despite following a simple formula, one of the better sports movies ever made
The first time I watched Whip It about four months ago, I did not really think much of it. I thought it was a pretty good movie that I wasn't going to think about much. However, I watched it a second time about a month later, and fell in love with it. Whip It is a film that is endlessly entertaining. I am serious. You will never be bored while watching this movie. I have seen it six times, and nothing has ever dragged in any of the viewings. Ellen Page, like usual, is exceptional in the role of Bliss Cavendar, a senior in high school whose mom had made her compete in beauty pageants for what seems like her whole life. However when the opportunity arrives for her to join a Roller Derby team, she takes advantage. This is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, and it really could not have gone better. Despite having a lot of sports movie cliches and following a simple formula, Whip It stands out because of the style, the incredible soundtrack, as well as the sport that is being played. There is just something about roller derby that is great for a movie. Also, this film has probably the best romance scene in a non-romance movie ever. Just saying. Critics, audiences, i mean, everybody likes this movie, and it has rightfully developed a cult following after a disappointing showing in the box office. Give this one a look if you haven't already.
