In the Earth (2021)
Another failure of conviction and vision...
The director of "In The Earth" has made a movie which he or she is unable to follow through on. The performances of the four main actors are stellar, but when it comes to representing the "entity", the director does nothing more than flash filtered images in front of us, with no substance or enlightenment. It comes across as a very, very bad student movie in that regard. Good performances from the actors, but a very weak visual experience.
The Bloodhound (2020)
a very effective Kubrick legacy treatment ....
"The Bloodhound" (2020) ... another excellent post-horror. Very surreal and dream-like. Contains in its execution elements of Kubrick in its use of rooms, doors, spaces etc. Once this movie gets you within its sweaty grasp, it will not let go.
The Pond (2021)
An anxious, surreal journey ...
Loved this. It is exactly how I like my horror. A bleak, despairing, slow moving, creeping, foreboding, surreal gem of a movie.
Boys from County Hell (2020)
Lazy. Had potential but not the conviction ...
Comedy / Horror" is a tricky sub-genre to pull off with conviction. This, is character driven, which is good. The laughs are reasonable. The problem arises when they try to introduce the horror. They unintentionally include it in the humour ... which makes for an average experience. After watching this I felt they had bitten off more than they could chew with introducing vampric, mythological, and folklore elements which were never properly explored.
Antibirth (2016)
Not bad ...
Not bad. Very strange if you are looking for a definitive story line. As a metaphorical piece, it works quite well. Reminds me of William Freidkin's "Bug". Good performances from some familiar faces.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Loved it BUT terribly weak ending ... shame
I am torn about this movie. I thought it was very engaging throughout. Great performances, a building tension, an ominous atmosphere. All the elements that you want in a good horror piece..... BUT it was flawed badly by a rushed, bizarre and ultimately unsatisfying ending.
Sator (2019)
Amazing treatise on familial trauma ... this is post-horror at its best
Magnificent slow-burning occult horror. Very driven by atmosphere. Dialogue is minimal, and pretty much limited to the Grandmother of a particular family who have been plagued by an entity for two generations. The extended family have been destroyed by this, and one sibling in particular has ensconced himself in the woods to deal with what they all know lurks there. Beautifully shot in both colour and black and white. This is true horror .... horror of the mind.
