Evan Straw (2010)
I really liked this movie
To begin with, I have no affiliation with anyone involved with this movie. I gave it ten stars because I liked it, and not because I'm trying to promote it for someone. I lived in a supposedly haunted house for 26 years. The house was constructed in 1895 by a Mormon polygamous, with six wives and a slew of children. I only had one experience with, I assume the previous occupants, but visiting quest had many. Almost all had seen a young girl, about 12, with long blonde hair and dressed in a pioneer style dress. Most notably wearing those old style boots that are tightly laced around the ankle. Of interest, nobody seemed unusually disturbed on seeing the young girl. What I liked about the movie was nobody was killed, no blood was splattered on the walls, or heads rolling down a flight of steps. It was just a good ghost story, that I could relate to. ,
Horror in the High Desert (2021)
Got sucked in
Chanced on this while surfing through movies on the TV. Ruth, Nevada got my attention because I had spent a lot of time in northern Nevada during my youth. Didn't pay attention to the description of the movie, just assumed it was a documentary. Got sucked in mostly because of the annoying self serving sister, who appeared to be more interested in her sudden 15 minutes of fame than her brother's situation. The ending was a shocker, and I didn't realize it was a movie until the ending credits. My opinion of Tonya Ogden, who played the sister, quickly went from a deplorable person to a great job of acting. All the acting was believable, and the story line was plausible, meaning this situation could have actually happen.
Dark Winds (2022)
A little disappointed
I was a little disappointed at first, thinking, or in hopes, the production would closely follow Tony Hillerman's novel, "The Dark Wind". Redford made an early attempt to bring the title to the big screen, after purchasing the rights to many of Hillerman's novels. There was an apparent attempt to follow the book, but conflicts arose and script changes made, resulting in the original director being fired. Years later PBS picked up three of Hillerman's works for TV movies, staring Wes Studi as Leaphorn and Adam Beach as Chee.
Though disappointed, I have few complaints about the new production. Zahn McClarnon is an excellent choice for Leaphorn, but I still have doubts about the choice for Officer Chee. Having read all the Hillerman books, most twice, Adam Beach was the perfect Chee, but then I have to keep reminding myself, this is not an adaptation of the original novel.
The series is well made, entertaining, and in the vein of Tony Hillerman, it does portray much of the Navajo culture and ceremonies. It is definitely worth watching, but I also strongly suggest picking up a copy of Hillerman's novel.
Lonesome Dove (1989)
The greatest western movie ever made
There is nothing else to say. This movie, without a doubt, is the greatest western movie ever made. The shame is, that McMurtrey's sequel, Steets of Larado, wasn't made with the same cast and with the same integrity. This production should have been a 12 hour mini series.
The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch (2020)
Cringe worthy
Disappointing. This could have been interesting but the over the wall acting and phony suspense actually made it difficult to watch. There are way too many buildups to suspense at the end of each episode that produces nothing. Only one scientist seems to legitimately what to explore the ranch, while the rest seem to be auditioning for a day time Soap Opera. Each time the new owner of the ranch pops up it's almost comical. Not wanting to review spoilers, I'll just say it's a mixture of comic with cringe. No don't know if you want to laugh or just say to yourself, "come on, you've got to kidding."
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Short review
I caught this show in progress on Epic. After 15 minutes of watching Linda Hamilton playing Sarah Conner's I had to turn it off.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Got my attention
I've never been a Kerry Washington and especially a Reese Witherspoon fan. My wife forced me to watch this series. Though still not a Witherspoon fan, I think there were better choices for this role, I am impressed with Kerry Washington's part. Most reviews claim she was painful to watch, and for this reason gave her a bad review. I have to agree that her character was extremely annoying, and at least by the end of episode 4 you hate her, but to me that is a sign a good actor. I haven't read the book nor have no intentions too, but as a viewer of the series, she definitely got under my skin, hence making the series interesting. As to Witherspoon, with her performance, I would never have continued watching the series, but Washington's character has definitely drawn we in.
