Champion (2023)
Infuriating but all in with the drama, singing
The music mostly sounds good so no complaints there. Vita is a strong singer. Bosco is obviously selfish. Doesn't want to credit his sister for her work or pay her is disrespectful. Then again the message of daughters being asked to mute themselves to not take away the light from their brothers still runs strong.
The whole fiasco could have been avoided if Vitas family only supported her career. Two siblings with that much talent in the spotlight would have been better than sidelining one.
Vitas "manager" Mark clearly has his own agenda, and Vita is naive. I don't blame Honey for betraying Vita. All in all this is very entertaining to watch.
The Color Purple (2023)
Another movie that should not be redone
I never watched any iteration of The Color Purple and I am younger that the original.
There was good messages here. "Leave if your partner hits you..." The targeted demographic of this movie amongst everyone else needs to see these messages. But it was so frustrating watching the same abuse play out on screen. Of course, I've been told that was common at that time and this is a remake, but I wish it took a more modern take. The theme of "struggle love" was very present especially towards the end when Celie is meant to "forgive" mister for his decades of abuse because he found "god." I wish they showed more of her strife to financial independence with the shop instead of just her strife in familial/platonic relationships. Likewise, the aspect of religion was not fleshed out or wanted in this age. I wanted Celie to take credit for improving her own life instead of crediting a god she's been told to believe in. The film much more "modern" which threw me off from the time period. The singing was strong of course if you like musicals.
