Blindspotting (2018)
A great rap battle
Subject importance: More and more important now days due to backwards racism that evolve in the world.
Characters weight: Very well played, especially Collin who let see the guilt and torment in a very personal manner. Also Miles is a fair done character for these days average man. But he is loosing his blonde personality.
Technical achievements: Correctly done.
Symbols: Black man is better than the white man. It is o problem. No on is better or worst.
Psychological aspects: A man tries hard and gains peace of mind. He can be an example. Probably many of us are unhappy by the fact that they are judged by their past facts not taking in account that a man can learn from mistakes and change.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Netflix kills the movies
Disappointed. After the great movies made by the brothers in more than 25 years, they do a film for Sunday afternoon. Nice costumes, colours, a few smiles and no ideea.
I hope they did it only for money and the next will be real.
Pororoca (2017)
Reality is the best fiction
Two hours and a half passed very quickly. This if you don't follow the action, but the changes in characters mind.
Maybe the most powerful Romanian film made after "After hills".
There is a resemblance with Zvyagintsev "Loveless" but goes dipper. Untill the mind blowing final scene, the film is very quiet, despite the tragic situation. In thos quite there is an inner scream that the main character exposes extraordinary.
If you want to see the decomposition of a man through pain, watch it.
Nackt unter Wölfen (2015)
Another nazi movie
Is not bad, but not a masterpiece. It's good that was made by germans. Hollywood would made it worst. Tells a truth in the end. Not all the germans were nazis and not all the nazis were bad. There are always good people ready to sacrifice themselves surrounded by wolves.
Holy Motors (2012)
Life is not real?
I watched it twice in a year and I liked it both times. But I must say it didn't leave me with clear ideas. There are thin characters but not superficial. There are not linked stories and each one is moving between reality and mind compositions.
One thing is interesting, the main character comes form nowhere and goes nowhere. You never see him in his real life. Maybe this is the idea, do we ever have a real life? Or all is prefabricated and our brain only mix the informations received? Am I myself writing this review, or is just an image a created?
See the movie and maybe you'll find out for yourself.
Mænd & høns (2015)
Jodorowski style
Twisted, unreal, grotesque. I don't know if you can learn something from it, but will beat your brain cells well.
La enfermedad del domingo (2018)
Back to the roots
Forgivnes and acceptance. Despite all we do in life there are only two certain things: we are born and we die. And between these two points there is only one person enough attached to us, mother. You can judge parents actions towards kids, but you cannot replace them ever. A must see one.
Calvary (2014)
Give yourself for others
I'm not a Catholic, but it seems to me that some grotesque behaviors of some priests are thrown upon the church for free. And maybe this film, through the main character tries to clear the church of this blame. People should be judge individually and their actions should not stain the group they are part of. This is probably understood in the end by the victim, and the victim is not the dead one.
Bande à part (1964)
Short scenes from nobody life
It is a way to show what a B movie is. Superficial characters with little expectations in life. But, you don't forget it soon. Ana Karina is the star, and plays well the short mind girl that believe everything. The plot is treated superficial and if you expect a policier you will be disappointed.
La teta asustada (2009)
Only death is mandatory
The rest is our choice. A transgenerational trauma, transmitted not only from mother to daughter but from the Inca's violence mixed with the Spanish Catholicism. A syncretism of traditions that hardly can be digested by the modern man. Poverty also is a factor in the slow and differentiate modernisation of these traditional societies and in overcoming myths that make life difficult. Life and death are inseparable, spirits walk the streets and harm the living, children are transforming a grave in a swimming pool. Take out the potato from me, my dead mother from the house, break the link with the sorrow padt and try to live your life. The only choice we have.
8½ (1963)
The tribulations of an inadequate
Any description in order to be realistic must be about yourself. Fellini do this though the magnificent Mastroianni. The adult man tries to overcome the childhood traumas through observation and dreams. He may be loved and respected in real life, but this isn't enough. The struggle within persists and the dreams are more and more comforting. Iconic images from sublime to grotesque. Restraint and pervert sexuality.
Midnight Express (1978)
A bad machine can be fixed?
It is the all time discrepancy between west and east. Different standards. The Turkish jail in the modern western eyes can be a hole, but for eastern peoples at thst time is just a cheap hotel. The prisoners are shown more like heroes than as traffickers. The otoman inheritance is still alive in Turkey and any westerner should be aware of this. Hayes has one great moment at the appeal. Here he is right. One can learn from his mistakes. If the punishment is too harsh the man became a criminal. He has nothing to loose.
The Killing (1956)
Classic thriller
Characters made by the book, no one steps out of the row. A little too theatrical, but that was the time. Seen today the heist is too simple (no cameras, access cards, sensors).
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Normal is abnormal
Very Anderson in colours, costumes, makeup. It's goes slowly and it's pleasant to watch. Neurotic characters that in search for happiness lie, cheat, are racist. But the don't do these in a wicked way. It's a family similar with the Adams.
Simón del desierto (1965)
Diamonds for pigs
People wants miracles and when they see one they aren't pleased. Simon is proud in top of his pillar, he heals, he forgives, he disputes with the devil. But he doesn't feel he is forgiven by God. In the end, the devil have seen God, while Simon didn't and he breaks. He will remain in "rock'n'roll" hell. Is it real that modernity killed the old and simple faith? Are we living among demons?
L'enfant (2005)
Child raised by children
Teenagers with no clear future steps into life suddenly. They are not prepared at all. The maternal instinct is well shown, at first in contradiction with the free and animalic instincts of the boy. But in the end humanity wins, even it is a little bitter.
Somewhere (2010)
Dolce far niente?
It's depicting the decay of luxury. A life with all the material things one needs, but with a great feeling of emptiness. Depression, loneliness, vulgarity. But also it's a fear of change. A little forced comparison with "La dolce vita".
Blue Valentine (2010)
Love still exists
One of the best couples on screen. Unexpected real and great acts from Gosling and Williams. They have good times and bad times, but you can feel the love all the time. They gave me the feelings from the first love.
The Dictator (2012)
Only if you are Baron Choen fan
And I am not. Contains some real critics about american politics, but is not convincing. Artistically is zero.
Trainspotting (1996)
Choose life
A must see film. Many times. It is simple life with bad and good things. All the characters are in the end innocent, even Digby. They just play using modern life violent rules. Music is great, "perfect day" makes you want to get high and stay there. Some of them dies, but only those who didn't have the will or wish to live anyway. Renton disappoints in the end, but we need to become men, not remain boys.
Shame (2011)
Shame is life
One of the best act from Michael Fassbender. Only for this and the film worth be seen.
But is more, and in my opinion there shouldn't be SHAME. It is an addiction that depend less on one will and is more due to the lack of love in the growing years. The despair of not be able to be consequent on life is depicted in a great manner. It's like at an alcoholic: you don't want it, but you have to.
In weiter Ferne, so nah! (1993)
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
Pure nihilistic philosophy of time and life.
Time is not money ...
Stalag 17 (1953)
Too much propaganda
The nazi camps are shown as a boy scout camp. American prisoners are sharp and smart and the german guards are hilarious and somehow stupid. I don't think this is the way to be remembered that time. Even the officers had different status they should be aware the the war is destructive and cruel. Not a trip to Europe.
