Counterfeiting in Suburbia (2018)
Don't do Counterfeiting
Take Mad Money (2008), which isn't exactly a masterpiece, dilute its plot with gallons of water and you'll be left with something resembling this film.
Stereotypical, one-dimensional characters, a strange plot that's disjointed at best (and bizarre at worst) with a cookie cutter story of good guys dealing with financial woes and venturing into a life of crime to pay back the loan sharks (and banks).
And, of course, throw in a character who's there merely for the adrenaline rush. Just to spice things up a tad bit.
The reason I'm giving it 3/10 is because, at the very least, it wasn't exactly unwatchable. Probably because counterfeiting is something I've fantasized about as a cash strapped kid.
Delta Farce (2007)
Surprisingly decent.
If you're looking for a proper plot or any sort of depth, you won't find it here. This 'film' is more like a really long comedy sketch, if that makes any sort of sense, as I don't know how else to describe Delta Farce.
As a non-American, I'm not wholly familiar with the main cast, the sole exception being Keith David (Sgt. Kilgore), who voiced David Anderson in the popular RPG, Mass Effect. I merely recognized him by his iconic voice, so it was a nice surprise, considering I'm a huge Mass Effect fan.
Overall, the plot is weak, the ending was rushed, and even the climax was poor at best. But the film has more than a few good laughs and is better than most comedies Hollywood is churning out today which have lost their edge, just for the sake of political correctness.
Howl (2015)
Shoots-off like a rocket, slow yet powerful, but looses steam near the end.
I don't generally write movie reviews because I'm not good at it but after seeing the mediocre 5.4 rating I felt like I should write a review. The movie is nowhere near as bad as the rating suggests. In fact, it's pretty good for a low-budget 'horror flick'.
Pros:
Good acting, decent characters, well directed and the first half is full of suspense. I went in completely blind i.e I didn't even know that the monsters were actually werewolves and I think that's how the movie is intended to be seen. It's also surprisingly devoid of cheap jump scares which are pretty much the staple of most horror flicks of this nature and more importantly, budget. While I'm not saying there are none, there indeed are, but they are well executed and you never feel 'cheated', for the lack of a better term!
Cons:
The horror aspect takes a back seat in the later half as the plot focuses more on the survivors and their struggle than the monsters themselves which isn't exactly a con but I'd have preferred more suspense. You can also tell that the monsters are basically actors in bodysuits and I personally think that the director should've avoided so many close-up shots of the monsters as I found it to be a little distracting. The movie is also riddled with horror movie clichés, especially near the end where you can almost tell what's about to happen and who's going to die next! I'm not saying it's entirely predictable as there are indeed some surprises here and there but they are minor and don't contribute much to the overall plotline.
Bottom line:
Very decent horror movie. It's its share of problems, like most movies, but the strengths far outweigh them and overall I absolutely enjoyed the movie. I was glued to my seat from start to finish which is more than I can say for most modern horror movies. It's not a classic, not even close, but it definitely deserves better than 5.4!
P. S If you enjoyed the = movie then you may want to give Money Train (2009) a shot.
Countdown (2019)
Final Destination + The Ring = Countdown!
[99.99% spoiler free]
For some reason or another, I always find 'techy demons' quite fascinating (to say the least) and that's the main reason I chose to saw this movie. Unfortunately it was rather predictable.
Too predictable...
The first 30 minutes or so reminded me of 'The Rings' (instead of a cursed VHS tape, you've got a cursed app this time around) whereas the rest of the movie felt like 'Final Destination' and 'A Nightmare of Elm Street' of sorts, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but... isn't exactly a good thing either.
On the plus side, the acting was quite solid and I just loved the character of 'Father John' (played by P.J Byrne who, BTW, is in Final Destination 5 as well). Also liked the character of John Bishop (Circle of Eight). Unfortunately, these two characters had less than 10 minutes of on-screen time combined.
Overall, a below average PG-13 horror movie full of jump scares which a teenager might find thrilling but... I'm far too old for them now.
Not recommended, unless you're into 'tech ghouls' and stuff and/or want to see a lightweight 'jumpy' movie after a bad day.
