Weird Science (1985)
A complete mess
I grew up watching the movies of the the late John Hughes and I love a few of them dearly.
Weird Science isn't one of them....not even close.
I found no charm in the movie. The humor is lazy and dim-witted. I never found myself rooting for any of the characters.
In many of Hughes other movies, the characters were well drawn and had depth. These characters are a deep as the average puddle.
Perhaps if this move had gone the more raunchy route it could have been better. Kind of a Porky's like vibe.
The one and I do mean one bright spot is the performance of the late and in my opinion great Bill Paxton. He is like a bolt of electricity when he is on screen.
There are several John Hughes movies that are worth seeing. Saying Weird Science is a waste of time us an understatement.
Psycho III (1986)
Still not sure how I feel about it.
Anthony Perkins owns the character of Norman Bates. He could have made 20 sequels to Psycho and he would be fascinating in every second of every one of them.
There is a scene where he is walking to a room at the motel and he thinks "mother" is there and the look on his face is priceless, it's a sort of bemused haze.
The movie has elements of a dark comedy and ridiculous camp. There is a scene between Perkins and Jeff Fahey that is absolutely hysterical.
Honestly, I'm not even sure how I feel about this movie. On one hand, I don't think it's good but, I find it very watchable. For me it exists in the bad/fun bad arena.
Ultimately, I would recommend it to someone who wants to watch an actor own a character like few actors have ever owned a character.
Have a few dark laughs and shake your head at the mismatched parts.
Psycho 3 might just work for you.
Vice Squad (1982)
Pulls No Punches
Vice Squad is a mean, nasty, intense and sadistic B-movie. I don't mean this as a negative, because that is exactly what the movie intends to be.
Vice Squad pulls no punches and is absolutely relentless.
The standout performance of this movie comes from Wings Hauser's portrayal of the the psychotic and homicidal pimp RamRod. Hauser is absolutely incredible in this movie, every second he is on screen he is frightening and menacing. He always seems like he is a half second from completely losing it, even when he is "seducing" the hooker Princess, he seems like he can hardly control himself from doing something awful.
RamRod is a nightmare of a human being. If he really existed, I don't care how tough or brave you think you are, the smartest thing you could do if you encountered him would be to politely get away from him. With RamRod it's not about him being tough, it's about him being truly, truly dangerous. No empathy, no remorse and no mercy.
I'm not going to go into detail about the movie. I think Vice Squad, like any other movie should just unfold in front of you.
I fully realize that this movie is not for everyone and if someone told me that they thought it was disgusting and there was nothing positive about it.I would understand that.
That being said, if you want to watch a cat and mouse/cop chase movie, set on the seedy streets of Los Angeles that doesn't hide its true intentions and never winks at the audience. Vice Squad has the goods.
