The Affair (2014)
So much right and so much found wanting
The Affair is one of the most mature and thoughtful depictions of grief I've ever seen. The first few seasons are incredible, with rich characters and a novel way of presenting the story. But beginning with the death of Allison, the whole show starts to wobble. The flash forward to the future was a poorly contrived pretext for exploring intergenerational trauma, and this is poorly handled, coming off as very pop-psych. Moreover, the ending is absolutely inexplicable. Noah, the central destructive force of the show, gets a triumphant send off, whilst Cole and Allison are denied their second chance. Utterly backwards.
Montana Story (2021)
Fantastic
A beautiful, devastating movie. Haley Lu Richardson continues to elevate everything she works on.
And this film is leavened with just the right amount of humour.
"So where did you read Dante's Inferno?"
"Cooking School"
Stargate Universe (2009)
Fantastic
Criminally underrated. SGU is easily one of the finest sci fi shows ever made. Dark, gritty, claustrophobic; it's easy to see why it was panned by the franchise's fans at the time. It's extremely different to SG1 and SGA. Nonetheless, taken on its own terms in 2021, it holds up beautifully, and does what newer franchises like the Star Trek reboot have failed to do: create compelling characters and relationships, and then tell stories about them. Somebody I once cared deeply for had a profound disability, and so I so appreciated Dr. Amanda Perry. Her character was written with sensitivity and maturity. Greer is also portrayed beautifully, in all of his complexity. Don't miss this show.
Tenet (2020)
Nope
Somebody needs to stage an intervention. No more pop-sci books for you, Christopher!
Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
Competitive dynamics in a fun package
If I taught Microeconomics, I'd assign the first season of this as a required part of the course.
Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)
Galling and gauche.
Watching this, I was reminded of how Sinatra used to amble onto late night television in the 70s.
It's over.
The jokes don't work anymore. The weird defence of sexual harassment, the lecturing of women; it's all revealing.
Life Like (2019)
Weird and too smart by half.
I think it's really touching that these two love birds finally found each other again, whilst Henry bled out at their feet. You'd think they'd freak out and call an ambulance, considering that they know he's a human being. I guess love does conquer all.
edit: Didn't Henry ever have to void his bladder? You'd think so.
