Bastille: Reorchestrated (2021)
Such an honest insight to the creation and validation of music...
I loved this. I love Bastille and I truly enjoyed the insights shared about the mental acuity and tenacity it takes to simply be able to do what you love. The criticism of art has gotten out of hand and talent is curbed because of it. Dan Smith is a genius, in my opinion, and the heart and soul poured into this is really a fruit of his leadership.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Brutally Real and Whimsically Camp
This was so well acted and written! The story is a dark one that isn't light on the humor to match. Carey Mulligan is sensational and deserves the hardware. It's rare an entertaining movie can chill you to the bone, move you to tears, and make you laugh out loud. The topic is real and chilling so beware the faint of heart.
Us (2019)
Dumbest Movie Ever
I get that this writer wants to be dripping in symbolism and allegorical profundity but it's just stupid. The camp factor is way too much and it's nearly a mockery of itself. Whoever gives this praise is far better than me at film studies, I guess. Or it's just more Peele hype. I guess he has support no matter what crap he releases
Iliza Shlesinger: Over & Over (2019)
Real and funny
I love the behind the scenes reality of the struggles of having "the weirdest job" as a comic, author, actor, etc. She explains things well and just lets you into her world. It doesn't hurt that she's brilliant. Worth the watch especially for fans!
Kim's Convenience (2016)
Funny!
I love this show. An easy watch with a very funny ensemble cast.
Nicole Power is my favorite as the manager of the rental car agency. She's so awkward and delivers the best realizations after she speaks. Such a great comedic performance and strong characterization. So funny!
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
I clearly missed something...
I saw this film much later than I should have, I guess. True to form, when a movie gets too much hype and praise early on, I tend to set my expectations too high. Such is the case here. I felt like it was an okay biopic but it felt oddly undecided about how it wanted to play out. For such a long run time, I felt like lots of the important parts were rushed and, while the music is iconic, as we all know, I felt like it overpowered the story and played a bigger role than the story itself. Maybe I'm just off here, but I don't see the acclaim. It's a basic story with great supporting acting but Rami Malek annoyed me to no end. Perhaps I should go back and look at Freddie Mercury more, but I couldn't get past him, which kept me from connecting. I'm sure I'm alone in this opinion and I can appreciate that. I will say the emotional peaks of the film were the highlights for me. The end concert sequence dragged on and on for me and I feel like they just added length to the movie when we already know the music. I would love to have seen his relationship blossom in more detail. That just popped up out of nowhere and it seemed like they didn't care to explore it, more so leaving it as an afterthought. The movie just didn't live up to the hype it received and I do not at all think this is even a best picture nominee.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
I just don't get it...
I tried and tried to find the charm and comedy in this as many others have but I just can't. It isn't half as funny as other comedies it's crushing at award shows. I feel like it's a total bandwagon ploy and it's not working with me.
