It may go on a little long and it may be guilty of a little hagiography when it comes to Paramount executives and creatives, but this is a really fun watch if you are at all interested in filmmaking during this period.
The actors all do a terrific job, and it was very smart to make a relatively unknown person, producer Al Ruddy, the protagonist. He's an unpretentious man with a job to do and wants to make a good film with a good story. He makes a good go between when it comes to the creatives, the suits and the mafia. Miles Teller does a terrific job anchoring the whole show, and Matthew Goode is uncanny as charisma bomb Bob Evans. Juno Temple also does a great job as Ruddy's underpaid assistant, Bettye who does way more than answer the phone and get coffee.
The set and costume design is beautiful, if a bit too polished to be realistic. This is best viewed as a fantasy vision of the past rather than gritty realism.
Still, it's a fun and diverting series that is worth your time if you are interested in this era of Hollywood.
