The Lighthouse (2019)
I'm so confused
Am I watching the same movie as the people saying Robert Pattinson's performance was good. And not just an R. Patt hater because of his twilight days, I loved twilight. But this film obviously lacks an engaging story line so it's slowing and semi-boring, which makes it hard to pay attention to anything else but Pattinson's terrible accent. Within just the 30 minutes I've watched so far I've heard Irish, British, New Jersey and... American old Hollywood? With so little going on, a mistake as big as an actor being unable to keep a consistent accent can break a whole movie. I think I'll just pass on finishing it.
Red Riding Hood (2011)
Watching again in 2021
I saw this movie when I first came out, and I will say I remember it being a lot better. At the time however, I was a 13 year old die-hard Twilight fan. After watching it again in 2021, I can see now why I loved it so much. I also had no idea until now that they were directed by the same person. What many of the lower reviews are saying is definitely true. Being that the story of Little Red originated as one of the twisted Grimm fairytales, a dark and suspenseful live action portrayal loaded with A-list actors has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, Hardwicke tried too hard to recreate the success she had with Twilight and capitalize off of the werewolf-packed love triangle story, turning this film into more of a cliche teen drama than anything else. Regardless, the cinematography was well done, and the actors sold the story well with the material they were given. I still enjoyed watching it and I love the soundtrack. This will probably only remain in my once-a-decade watch list when there's nothing better to watch.
Maid (2021)
These reviews are scary..
There is an astounding amount of reviews saying Alex "overreacted" or should've gotten Sean the help he needed rather than "leaving him at his lowest point," and I'm willing to bet 99% of them were men who also think it's not abuse unless someone's been hit. It has not been long since the legal system started taking all forms of abuse equally seriously, but we clearly still have a long way to go.
As a survivor of DV, I found Maid to be incredibly triggering. That's why I'm giving it 10 stars. It felt REAL. Every emotion, every micro-interaction, was so perfectly portrayed that it felt like watching a documentary of my own life. Yes, Alex made some bad choices, but that's because she's a real human navigating a new and incredibly tricky situation. There's no how-to guide on leaving an abusive partner when you have nothing and starting new. It's beyond hard at first, and sometimes you end up having to take few steps back for the greater good which is keeping you and your child(ren) safe. I loved every minute of it and found myself sobbing through most of the episodes.
This show won't be taken well by the masses who see life through the lens of generational misogyny much like the men in the show. What I do hope is that it gives more women and men who are experiencing DV the courage and strength to free themselves. It is hard, but it is possible, and you ARE worthy of a better life.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (2020)
I don't understand all the bad reviews
I always find it funny when I see reviews for kid's movies/shows on this app and people are dissecting them like they're meant for an audience that aren't... children.
My 3 year old is a dinosaur fanatic so naturally this is one of his favorite shows. I was entertained myself for a kid's show. I even found myself watching most of the newest season even without my son around because I was pretty invested in the fate of the 6 teens by that point.
As far as the show's success in honoring the original Jurassic Park world, I was never a huge fan so I can't really speak to that. Maybe that's why there are so many reviews under 5 stars for it. Overall, I think Camp Cretaceous was a fun take on the story that had enough dinosaur action to keep my son entertained, and enough of a storyline to not make me rip my hair out. That's a win in this mom's book.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
If you loved the office, you'll love Schitt's creek
I started watching about a week ago on Christmas Eve when I was wrapping presents and didn't know what to watch. The first few episodes were slow, so it was mostly just background noise. But I found myself interested enough in what was going on to pick it back up the next day. I'm not on season 4 and will likely finish by the end of the week. It has rightfully earned its place in my list of favorites that I'll end up rewatching again and again.
Schitt's Creek's reminds me a lot of The Office. It's dry, sarcastic, and at times a bit dark, with a few laugh out loud moments here and there. And if you ask me, that's the best kind. Yes, at times it's fun to get lost in different worlds full of over-dramatization and fantasy experiences we'll never really have. But it's the subtle humor in watching realistic, every-day interactions between a believable set of characters that's the most entertaining in my opinion because it reminds us not to take life too seriously.
Bottom line: If you don't find shows like Schitt's Creek to be funny, I bet you're also really fun at parties..
Nightcrawler (2014)
I don't really get the hype
I'm a psychological thriller junkie and this movie was common on lists I've come across of "movies that will mess you up for weeks." It seems to have good reviews but I don't really get the hype. It was entertaining enough to keep me watching, but that's about it.
The ending scene in particularly really kind of aggravated me. The main character, Louis Bloom, is the sort-of creepy, but kind of lovable anti-hero that I would normally love and find myself rooting for despite all of the questionable things he'd done. The showdown with the cops in the end was rushed an anticlimactic. If they had extended that scene a bit to really show how manipulative and clever he is (like how he completely got away with attempted manslaughter earlier? Like, you mean to tell me that the cops didn't even attempt to look into why that guy ran his car into a pole?) that may have made it better.
Lego Frozen Northern Lights (2016)
Not a fan
Frozen is my son's favorite franchise right now, and I can't say I'm upset about having to watch both movies 4 times a day. It's one of Disney's better 2 movies. So when I came across this show I was excited to have something new to watch. I had to turn it off halfway through the first episode.
The action and animation was enough to keep my son entertained for a few minutes, but it didn't feel like Frozen at all. The characters appearances are good, but their voices and mannerisms are just weird. The only reason I even came on here was to see if the voice actors were the same because I really couldn't tell.
Overall, I gave it 4 stars because it might be a good background show to put on when your kids aren't really watching it, or it might be fun for the really little ones. But if you have any die hard Frozen fans in the house, I'd leave this one out of your rotation.
