Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Another "Capitalism is bad" garbage from a bunch of entitled self-righteous hypocrites
What I liked:
- for a movie with limited budget it looks pretty decent
What I disliked:
- it attempts to use surrealistic imagery a'la Terry Gilliam, but fails in that, it just looks silly (most of the times)
- it is pretty much a pure anti-capitalist, pro-communist propaganda by a hypocritical communist author - all of the people participating on this should be ashamed of themselves
- the attempt for a social critique is about as intelligent and subtle as a pick-axe in the head (as a mean of curing a headache)
- and of course - as in most of "stunning and brave" movies nowadays every white person is a piece of human garbage - I'd be curious, what kind of hell would break loose if they race-swapped the cast of this garbage of a movie...
O vánocní hvezde (2020)
After a long time a christmas fairy tale that didn't suck :-)
What I liked:
- Good use of music - I like it when there is a leitmotiv
- Pretty decent effects
- The characters of Vasek and especially Denicka were really heartwarming
- Most importantly - noone would break into a song Disney-style - I really hate that trope :)
What I disliked:
- Pretty serious plot-hole concerning nature of the stars (when do stars shine)
- Characters were a little too quick in building their relationships for my tastes
- The princess character didn't work for me... - since the actress is german, they had to dub her and the result felt like an advert for a toothpaste, or washing powder... - moreover, Denicka was much more beautiful then the princess... (but that is a matter of personal taste)... anyways - even though she grew on me a little by the end, I think she was by far the weakest link in the casting
- I think they should have put a little more character development on a few characters - mainly the princess/Vasek relationship - It would be nice to know, how Vasek fell in love with her (just watching somebody ice-skate seems a little shallow). Secondly I would like to know how Denicka fell in love with that idiot Sirius...
- There was a great opportunity missed when Vasek (and others) were under the spell. The filmmakers kinda forgot about the school-children - I think they quite obviously loved their teacher and I'm pretty sure they loved their parents... I think it could have been much more touching if the pure hearts of children would help the adults...
Conclusion: Overall - even though there are a few downsides in this movie it is still one of the best fairy tales I've seen in a very long time...
Rozpustený a vypustený (1985)
Great, but depending on a language nuances
I consider this movie to be one of the best comedies I've ever seen. The only shortcoming in my eyes is the acting of Marek Brodsky, which seem a little bland. But the great script and directing more than makes up for that.
There is one big issue for anybody, who is not a native (or native-level) czech speaker though. The movie is quite dependant on the language humor and poetic/creative formulations (like in most of the movies/theatre plays by Sverak and Smoljak). I've seen the subtitled version and in my mind the translation stripped the movie of most of it's charm.
Tenet (2020)
Great in all technical aspects - but sorely lacking in storybuilding
I've just seen this movie a few hours ago. I hate to say it, but I'm pretty dissapointed (since I loved Nolan's movies Memento, The Prestige and The Dark Knight).
What I liked:
- Costumes
- Some of the camera-work (pretty much all that wasn't action itself)
What I disliked:
- Chaotic action - I really hate how almost every movie nowadays tries to make action as fast and chaotic as possible. Even though there are a few good examples of using chaotic action - this was not one of them...
- Heavy reliance on one particular visual gimmick, which gets real old real fast
- But most of all - is there some manual for screenwriters/directors nowadays saying that you shouldn't try to make your audiance to be emotionally invested in your characters? During all of the movie I was telling myself: "am I supposed to care what happens next?". The Protagonist is just somehow there (and yeah - the the main hero is called is "Protagonist" - they didn't even bother to give him a name - or maybe it was just some excersice in pretentiousness). I don't know what drives him, what are his fears, what is his past. Simply - no character exposition with maybe one exception concerning his willingness to obey rules. If he died 1 hour into the movie, I wouldn't mind. The same goes for pretty much all the characters.
In conclusion -it's a shame. The basic idea is decent and it is obvious, that most of the of the film crew is really competent. But this movie was just another example of form above substance and the biggest dissapointment in a long time for me...
