Mayfair Witches (2023)
Never read the book, but now I want to.
I am a fan of Anne Rice's work. I've fallen in and out of love with Lestat more times than I can count. For some reason or another I never could get into the witching hour/ Mayfair series (the book the show is based on). I was excited for this show bc I watched the recent Interview adaptation and even though it wasn't 100% loyal to the book I really enjoyed the series. Mayfair was an opportunity for me to finally get stuck in to the world of the witches. I rather enjoyed it. I am not a huge fan of Alexandra dadario. I'm not sure why but I always find her acting a bit meh. However I found myself sucked in. I now am excited to read the novel for the first time. I understand all those who love the books and bc of that can't get into the books. But it's worth the watch.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
The only Pinocchio that matters.
I should start by saying, I hate Pinocchio. Every other version has always just felt sort of creepy and boring to me. But in Guillermo del Toro's hands it is transformed into the absolute perfect fairytale. This is one of the best pieces of animation I've ever seen in my life (I'm 36 and a lover of animation). It's so full of life and soul. It is thought provoking, funny, entertaining. The only thing I'd change is wishing this had come out when I was a kid so I could see it through the lens of a child. It's a masterpiece. I would also recommend watching Pinocchio handcarved cinema, after the movie. It's a little behind the scenes look into how it was created. It somehow makes the movie feel all the more special bc you can see all the love that went into its creation.
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
A reimagining
Firstly might I say I adore Anne Rice's work. She's why I fell in love with vampires and reading. When I saw how much things had changed I thought I would be disappointed; however that couldn't be farther from the truth. The story has been adapted for the modern age beautifully. This is far better than the film. Yet stayed true to the essence the book conveys. The acting marvelous. This is the first Lestat I have seen on screen that lives up to the diabolical Angel that exists in my imagination. I love that Louis anguish was given substance and purpose and that he was more than just some crybaby. More than that I love that Anne Rice was gracious enough to allow this story to be told through a new lens. That she and her son welcomed the idea of an evolution. It's an adaptation worth the watch. Can't wait for part 2.
The Spanish Princess (2019)
Don't waste your time...
Complete fabrication. I don't even know how this is contextualized as a historical drama. FYI this has nothing to do with history as it pertains to this period in time. Even the costumes are inaccurate.
Riviera (2017)
High hopes but alas disappointed...
This show starts off promising with tons of tons intrigue. But somewhere along the way it just becomes a convoluted mess. They throw every soapy drama troupe in there. Rush into storylines and just as quickly rush out of them. Nothing ever feels resolved. The intention was to keep you interested but it all just feels too far fetched and borderline ridiculous by the end.
Warrior (2019)
Awesome show!
Without giving any spoilers away, it's pretty much a kung- fu western... My husband who loves westerns started watching it first and insisted I start watching it so we could see it together. I'm not the biggest fan of westerns but this one is pretty awesome. Firstly it appealed to me Bc it's a part of American culture that is severely underrepresented but was obviously very influential to general American culture. So I feel like I'm learning something, or at the very least my interest is piqued so that I want to learn more about this long lost (hidden/ignored) part of American culture. 2nd I was really intrigued by the fact that the show was based on the writings of legend Bruce lee. I grew up watching his films with my grandpa and just being awed by not only his athleticism but also his wisdom, discipline, and ingenious mind. Lastly the show has just enough "drama" to appeal to my love of soapy period pieces. The show is gritty, and captivating. And honestly I just love to see some good old fashioned ass kicking.
Bumblebee (2018)
Best part about this movie is the music.
Loved the nostalgia factor on this movie. I'm a late 80's early 90's kid so I loved the trip back in time. The music in the film was especially fun. The film over all was cute.
Den of Thieves (2018)
Thouroughly enjoyable
I liked this film more than I intended on. The ending was so fun. And it had a great cast. I hope they make a sequel.
John Leguizamo's Latin History for Morons (2018)
Equal parts funny, infuriating, and inspiring
I'm not even sure how to articulate all that this show represents. It so perfectly sums up the Latino American experience. Growing up Mexican American there's always that struggle to not only honor our forefathers but also finding a way to acknowledge and honor our Latin culture in a way that was more than just stereotypically Latin via our dancing, and amazing cuisine. I was truly moved by this special. He tapped into the part of my that feels always slightly underrepresented and disenfranchised by America. But also reminded me that inside my vains is the blood of warriors, mathematicians, astronomers, genius engineers, and tireless revolutionaries. This show should be required watching for all Americans.
Find Me in Paris (2018)
Lighthearted and fun.
This show made me feel 10 years old again! It's slightly nonsensical but complete fantastic. It has dancing and time travel via beautiful elaborate time pieces. The dancing isn't the most technically adept. However it suits the demographic of the show. Watch with an open mind and youthful eyes. You'll soon find yourself transported to a younger version of yourself.
Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018)
Pure joy.
He made me laugh, he made me cry. Adam Sandler gave me all the feels with this special. It was real and from his heart, but goofy, hilarious, witty, and nostalgic. I loved every moment of it.
Chef's Table: Cristina Martinez (2018)
Amazing story!
This story is so moving because it's the story of so many who have come to the US. They share not only the fruits of their labor but their heart and souls to fill our bellies and beguile our senses. Her story is the magic. Her experiences are fused into her cooking and transform it into something other worldly. It's about more than just food. This episode speaks to our primal instinct to not only survive but to thrive.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
The book is always better.
I had really high hopes for this show. And it's not bad. But doesn't quite live up to the novels. The cinematography is great. Certain details were reimagined. However I'm sure avid lovers of the books will still find this show entertaining. And hopefully the details don't gnaw on them like they do me. Mostly I think it's in the cast that I find issue with. For example Marcus is English in the show. American in the book, which is sort of an important detail. Ysabeaus agelessness was not taken into account when she was cast. And Teresa Palmer as Diana somehow isn't quite right. Overall the show is enjoyable. And I'm sure if I didnt love the books as much as I do I wouldn't find so much issue with the cast. Some characters seem perfectly cast however, such as Sarah and Em. Domenico, Juliet Durand. Jury is still out on a couple like Marthe and Baldwin. I just really love the characters as the author imagined them.
