Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Glad to see all the other bad reviews
There are movies and shows so bad that when the last credits roll, you just sit there and laugh at the absurdity. But this time I was genuinely angry.
Were we really supposed to feel sorry for player 001 at the end because he wanted to experience the fun he had as a child? Oh, but he didn't force anyone to be there so that makes it okay. What is this drivel? I initially thought the marble episode was great but it lost its whole meaning after this garbage ending.
The use of this jazz song in the front man's office and the Blue Danube Waltz are extremely cheesy and cringeworthy. It seems like this show tries to be so much at once with its gore, thriller and occasional comedy elements. Everything about it is just so over the top. And what about Ali? Why is he never brought up again after he died? He was a member of the core group after all. Why is his family shown once and then never again?
This show is rated way too highly but what else to expect from the usual overhyped Netflix productions? 2 stars, just because it's not entirely unwatchable.
Hei tai yang 731 si wang lie che (1994)
Nonsensical and unoriginal
According to an interview with T. F. Mou, the director of the first Men Behind the Sun, he was unaware that two sequels existed until a fan told him about them. Part 2 and 3 are the work of notorious B movie director Godfrey Ho. Part 2 is basically a retelling of the first part and Men Behind the Sun 3 does not have anything to offer that we haven't seen in the previous movies. It's just the same experiment/autopsy scenes all over again so if you have seen these already, there is no shock factor at all.
I don't know if this was because I was watching a Chinese dub with English subtitles but they seemed to have renamed Dr Ishii, which is strange because we know who he is. But he is not the protagonist here anyways, he only keeps circling around in his plane near active combat zones instead of flying to safety. And because no Godfey Ho movie would be complete without a ridiculous fight scene, we have the part where the soldiers beat up the Manchurian train conductor instead of just shooting him. They then inject him with bacteria for fun and leave him behind near the train tracks. Why would they do this? I thought they wanted to keep the activities of their unit a secret as much as possible. The guy manages to crawl away, encounters two children and gets the word out.
There is no reason to watch this movie except for the sake of completion when you have seen the other two. The rest is as boring as a train ride over several days would be in real life.
Poison Ivy (1992)
No tension kept throughout, still never boring
Although Poison Ivy does not maintain much tension before approaching its last scenes and sacrifices some of its runtime for awkward erotic scenes between Drew Barrymore and Tom Skerrit, this movie is still pleasant to watch. It just has a mysterious atmosphere and makes the viewer feel surrounded by a certain calmness and nostalgia (even when you see the movie for the first time). The soundtrack also helps set this mood. Barrymore's personality at this time is very well reflected in her role as Ivy and the same could probably be said about Sara Gilbert in her role as Sylvie. This makes it feel as if it is two real friends with different personalities interacting, instead of just actors.
The audience is confronted with the question of whether rooting for Ivy to get through with her plans is the right thing to do or not, and in the end, there is no definite answer. Sure, Ivy is highly manipulative and does not seem to really care about Sylvie unless it is for personal gain but she also seems misunderstood, fundamentally lonely and merely looking for a place to belong to.
