Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Pilot (2013)
Season 1, Episode 1
6/10
Meh could be so much more but fun I suppose?
25 September 2013
OK so like you I am a big super hero fan and that means Marvel as well as DC and that means avengers and ironman and Thor and all the rest. It also means the excellent ARROW and the good no ordinary family RIP. Also Buffy was a super hero and I loved her and angel who was a anti hero monster lol Do i love AGENTS OF SHIELD AVENGERS GODS AND MONSTERS UNIVERSE HEROES SUPER CHA CHING FRANCHISE America FOR EVER etc. show? It is OK so far.

Sadly OK is not OK for a pilot especially of this pedigree so lets talk HEROES. Is this better than HEROES? NO no in any way is it better in the pilot than any episode in season 1 or maybe 2 or 3. Is it better than ARROW pilot? NO WAY 100% or Smallville? Nope.... So what is it like in quality then???? It is like No Ordinary Family but without a strong cast.

We have a very wooden Jock type and some very bad UK types who resemble jar jar lol and some generic cliché kung fu Chinese lady (who is a goo actress from other shows wasted here) and then we have some hot teen babe who is just annoying but hot so meh and then we have the parents.

Agent C and Coby from that comedy show and they rock as they are film stars so Im wondering why the show is not just about them...and maybe the hot new girl? who could become less annoying???

Time will tell but it is no ARROW and no HEROES but then that is OK if it becomes its own show but currently it HAD NOTHING IN IT which was new or unique or even cool over cheesy.

No villain was established worth any thing to mention and the heroes were mediocre and I never felt that they were a team or the real heroes just less super which I thought the show would be more about.

To soon to call but it currently lacks identity and with this director and writer and franchise...........well all it has is FRIKEN CHARACTER!!!! so for them to lose or drain it or distil it to appeal to everyone (much like CPT America) they have lost something in the process which all good MARVEL and super hero and shows need to survive to season 2.

Arrow has it in spades (amazing show, so much more than this so far). Actually you know what this show reminded me of? THE CAPE LOL as its campy and kind of funny and fun and cheesy but not cool and not clever.

To early to call but will need so much more to be worthy of its legacy. All they need to do is kill off everyone but Agent C and Coby and we have a hot show :D

Beautiful re-imagining of a wonderful franchise
14 September 2013
This was excellent (you can now leave to watch it)....and as a huge fan of the anime (not the manga) I loved it. I have all the other episodes and films and TV films and redux etc. and I love them all for being different but the same, well this is the same, but different.

It looks awesome (real sweet)and has signature cool GITS gadgets and crazy spy plots and Jap. madness and some awesome fight scenes with robot brilliance. Obviously watch in Japanese with Eng. subs if possible. As soon as I had watch it wanted the next instalment (Nov 2013).

Seriously anyone who moans about this (and there are many) because it looks a little different and has a few plot differences is an idiot, as the manga is very VERY difference to all the anime and eventually the comic became 'hentai'(arty porn) so be pleased with what we have here and what we have is excellent! The major is particularly cool and though slightly different than her past incarnations she is still her own woman / android and it is super cool how the team comes together and emotionally binds.

My only issue is the story is a little convoluted and confusing at times but so was the 2ng Gig and especially GITS2 at times due to language and cultural issues as well as poor writing.

Also if you love the films and the previous TV shows then you might have to 'readjust' but the new back stories and the shifted focus really make ARISE its own animal and by the end you simply don't care and just want to see hot robots kill each other! (and other stuff). Also good news....you do not need to know anything about the franchise or the films or manga or animes etc. as it stands on its own two synthetic feet. Go get the bluray version now and you will not be sorry.

An odd film for an off day?
21 November 2012
The film made me feel good and it made me laugh and there was some nice performances and a wonderful idea which they failed to develop and instead took the easy route with lazy writing and simplistic direction.

There were points where I was so invested in the story that I became angry and shouted at the screen for such obvious plot holes and dumb writing. As a fan of the director I thought he failed to bring his A game to this project and basically sold out on dealing with the more difficult questions which would inevitably arise from the complicated subject of child rearing and adoption and relationships etc. The film instead choose to be a whimsical fairy tale employing obvious tracts to jerk a tear from you.

The film could have been so much more if it did not seem so rushed to ultimately go no where leaving so many unexplained and problematic questions which were simply glossed over for convenience but left my brain hurting.

This is a prefect example of a film which falls in between the user rating system. I awarded this film a reluctant 7 (good) but I wanted to give it a perfect 6.5 (above average) though I thought it deserved more than an average 6 which I have awarded to films I describe as OK or passable but once we get to 5 it is a lost cause.

I only awarded it a higher mark than it deserved because by the end it is a feel good film with some bitter sweet old school narrative but at times it felt like it was written by a ten year old boy but a talented one 'who rocks, shoots the winning goal and has his mothers heart'.

Supernatural: Bitten (2012)
Season 8, Episode 4
5/10
If I didn't know better I'd think Supernatural had lost the plot
25 October 2012
SUCKS! Wow the spoiler is supernatural officially sucks! I wait all week, make time in my schedule and sit down to watch a show with my favourite dudes and as I've watched every episode in all the series i expect a b c but what the fudge is this nonsense? Brown Betty? Please writers stop pissing with our show. How old is and overdone is this Blair Witch nonsense anyway? and how starved for ideas must the writers be to recycle this garbage? Can't wait to get back to the show I know and love next week....oh and if the writers are so keen to be experimental how about actually improving on this seasons story, writing, script, direction etc. now that be real innovation!

A review from a fan perspective
6 October 2012
This is an accurate review in reaction to the fake shill reviews posted by people paid to do so.

Wow! I wish this film was at least an improvement on the last animation or something less Mila J. but no it is DUMB DUMB DUMB with a capital D.

I am a big resident evil fan, not a fanboy but someone who has played all the main series games and even is quietly enjoying no.6 as we speak and the issues with this film are very similar to those of that game which currently causing all types of mixed feelings across the gaming world.

If you have seen the trailer then you are already sold as it simply looks awesome. The animation is fantastic if you like video games which is what this is, a glorified video game with POV camera angles and the exact same characters as the latest game and many of the locations and monsters are the same...exactly which is clearly a tie in of sorts to help cross promote each other. This is no Pixar but it is pretty sweet to look at from beginning to end which in itself will sell the film to many but.....BIG BUT the story, plot, script, dialogue etc. is simply not there or what is in its place is truly DUMB and makes little to no sense and anyone who has any type of understanding how the world works or even basic law enforcement or even small communities or hell human nature will be constantly saying 'Okkkkkk, mmmmm but what about...um...okkkk this makes zero sense...what the hell???!!!???'. I think the appalling them tune says it all....'I am broken like a marrow...' or maybe Leon Kennedy says it best when he says, 'we need to go on even without any limbs!'. So from the latter maybe you get an idea of the quality of the writing and why this films falls flat on it's face.

The film has all the ingredients to be as good or superior to the last one which I thoroughly enjoyed as an airport is a fantastic place to have a zombie outbreak. Though Damnation is literally damned from the outset due to the incredibly naive and childish writing. You would think if you put LEON S MOST POPULAR RES> CHARACTER EVER KENNEDY and ADA HOT AS HELL WONG you would it would equal instant cult status but sadly even with these fan favs. the film plods along with cliché lines and predictable twist, if any, and every scene looks like a new location in a game but this is a film and ironically the game is being heavily criticized for the opposite reasons.

The music / sound doesn't help either as the soundtrack ranges from non existent to boring to awful USA rock tracks by Japanese singers who do no understand what they are singing etc. and the sound is just uninteresting and creates little to no tension or scares as this may be a horror franchise which became an action horror franchise and ended in just action which then became a talky drama.

The above is another serious issue which undermines all the beautiful animation and wonderfully deep pool of resources the franchise has built for itself over the last ten plus years. What type of film is this and who is the audience as the intelligence level would presume it was for 12 year olds but the occasional blood letting (zero sex and little gore) would suggest at least 15+. Of course both female characters (there are only two, maybe three) get their clothes off and reveal a boob and the third girl is literally a sexy zombie cheerleader with a nasty case of the Zombies...actually there is one more and she stays fully clothed at all times but she is only on screen for maybe 1 min?. While the male leads (which are plentiful) keep fully dressed and kick ass and save everyone though Ada does her bit...with her boob out.

Now I don't have an issue with sexism in a film aimed at male teen fan boys but still it is kind of lame and offensive and actually very Japanese and there is a feeling of misogyny throughout the film in my opinion. Overall it was utterly forgettable and horribly predictable and ultimately irrelevant and should have never been made except to cross promote the new game which I would recommend as I am loving it though it is more action evil then resident.

If you need a Res fix rent or buy the previous installment or play the new game as it is practically a film anyway. Avoid this mess if possible but if you actually need to see it just make sure you don not pay for it and if you do then make sure you send a written letter of complaint to the makers to prevent this travesty from reoccurring! 5/10 - 5 for the animation and the franchise. Thank you for reading.

Lack luster and as empty as the hotel hallways
3 October 2012
Well as a big fan of Devils Advocate (Which this basically is) I was excited to see that Terry (of Lost) was the star though after watching the pilot, though he was as always very good, the show is currently not.

At best described as mediocre with potential but at worse it is cliché, wooden, borderline boring with weak special effects and uninteresting characters and mundane direction.

Where Devils Advocate excelled, this show so far, fails to deliver or even emulate and seems to be far too middle of the road and lack luster with few chills or enough sex appeal to warrant its existence in an over saturated market.

I will give it a chance but they seriously need to amp up either the sex and violence or improve on the writing and direction or do both and be the next DEXTER.

This show currently offers nothing new to TV / film veterans and pales in the bright light of similar shows such as American Horror Story.

A small show like this in a limited setting which we are all too familiar with really succeeds or fails on its writing and style or possibly effects but if the weak pre-credit sequence or the far from captivating conclusion to the episode is the best they have to offer than the show shelf life is limited and will be rotten within the first season.

Conclusion 6/10 CAN DO BETTER

Lockout (2012)

Absolute Garbage
23 July 2012
Everything that is wrong with this film has already been said as the everything you see on screen is stolen from other films which did it made better. take the time to see Fortress or Escape from NY or Die Hard or Alien 4 or really any film other than this piece of junk.

I love Sci fi and guy Pearce and i like Maggie grace and luc beson but lockout....well I don't love or even like you and it was painful to last till the end which just became sillier until my eyes bled and my brain melted from the sheer stupidity.

This is not enjoyable popcorn filler or a bit of action fun....this film is barely lost in space or event horizon which had redeeming qualities.

Who knows what was going through the makers heads and I hope this film fails to make its total budget so people will try harder in future.

What I do want is Dead Space the film please as much of the stuff reminded me of that.

The Walking Dead: What Lies Ahead (2011)
Season 2, Episode 1
6/10
The budget left when Frank did
18 October 2011
Season 2 premieres of The Walking Dead has clearly established the titular zombies as shambling or running dead defying all previous cannon and moving clearly away from George Romero towards Danny Boyle territory. The first episode of the troubled but successful series was overall mildly enjoyable though horribly annoying in parts due to budget constraints, poor writing and lack of character conviction. It was possibly one of the worst episodes yet in a series with no bad episodes? Yes it was far more violent but fake looking cgi blood just doesn't cut it which is clearly one of the monetary issues which will plague this season and was one of the reasons its creator Frank Darabont left. Though there seemed to be lots of zombies it could have been the same ten and failed to inspire the spectacle of season 1 premiere. Ironically though they are zombies they were far from what we expect and at one point they seemed so mobile, able and organised that they might as well have been vampires. There were some awful moments with very stupid people and their dumb kids constantly getting into trouble and frankly by this point people this dumb would be dead and eaten. Also religion made a big return which though appropriate considering the circumstances the scenes were unrealistic and melodramatic, overtly long and frankly ludicrous with no one blaming the almighty for allowing the extinction of the near human race unless god is a zombie and so he has recreated us all in his new, slightly mouldy image?

The already weak extra characters plumbed new lows in ridiculousness with a totally token black dude and the minority Asian fav. completely wasting the little screen time they were given in an episode which felt that it went on too long with very little happening. After a brief promising start the episode quickly became a walk in the woods and overall the characters which were not that great in season 1 proved there disposable quality which could easily lead to the show as a whole. The one redeeming moment was an adhoc autopsy which was fantastically awful but fascinating all the same. If they could have added at least two more of these high mark moments which will not be forgotten in a hurry then the season would be assured, instead I worry that it will run out of steam as soon as it runs out of money and probably viewers.

American Horror Story: Home Invasion (2011)
Season 1, Episode 2

It just gets better and better!
16 October 2011
Well the pilot wasn't a fluke! The show is well and truly mental but hey it's 2011 and we have survived Lost, x-files and 24 so why not push TV that little but further and bring full on horror fest to the small screen. The show is easily on par with the fist seasons of Masters of Horror and equally as nasty. This episode was no exception and from scene to scene I was exclaiming WTF and OMG as they ramped up the violence and tension level. I am still not sure where or how the show can go on but I will be glued to my screen in anticipation of the macabre writers next twist. So much on offer it is literally a veritable feast of flesh!

Completely MENTAL!
8 October 2011
Well I was really surprised! After the middle of the road nonsense of Terra Nova which I had such high expectations for I saw American Horrow Story by accident and without any expectations I was blown away!

It is KINGDOM HOSPITAL meets American Gothic + the gift + eerie indiana with a touch of the haunting + desperate housewives + true blood.

The plot of the pilot was purposely unbalancing with little making sense and most future stories being alluded to but that sense of unease where nothing is what it seems to be really worked. The actors were OK - good; their characters were kind of repulsive but in a good way and you know things are just going to get worse for everyone. It wasn't really scary and in places it was laughable but it was also sooo weird that it had you waiting just to see what madness was coming next. I really like the idea that there is a good chance that everyone is a ghost and each persons perceptions are altered by the house and the kinky sex was effective at making you feel sick rather than horny. I am not sure where the show can go but if you just accept if for enjoyable, popcorn horror nonsense and don't think to hard it could be a great series but still too crazy to tell.

Terra Nova (I) (2011)
7/10
Potential..ly flawed..?
29 September 2011
TERRA NOVA is not bad...but it is not that good either. All that matters is the return on the current investment, before advertising, a TV pilot record of $10 million on FOX which means ratings count otherwise it will be cancelled or sold and vastly stripped down. Beyond that I was horrified at the sheer cost and waste of talent that was on display during the pilot. Also the number of plot holes had me screaming at my TV, not because I'm mental but due to the fact that like Falling Skies I wanted to love the show from day one but they made it practically impossible. Steven Spielberg's involvement is almost a guarantee of poor quality these days (which boggles my mind) as he like with Falling Skies has sold his credit to the show.

It is as if the creators (amazingly a good fringe director!!??) have never read a good book / watched a great film or viewed a super series which is not the case if you look at all involved resume which leads me to believe that there was allot of interference from on high and the disjointed editing, and patchy almost hasty writing would support this. The dinos effects (that's really the selling point folks) were below par (especially in daylight), the script was a mediocre to laughable, the science messy, confusing and offensive, the acting was weak (as if the characters except Taylor could not commit) and those characters were mostly horrible (though as always fairly attractive) but like the alien dung of falling skies it has potential due to a captivating story (or idea) as sometimes dino dung can be sweet smelling and hey it makes roses grow right!...right?

There is no denying that though the Hollywood moneymen wet dream checklist has been ticked, it is currently fundamentally flawed, lacking the 'oomph' other better but recently cancelled shows had. Terra Nova is not as good as SGU/SG1/V/ENTERPRISE or BSG and it's definitely no LOST or blue enough to be AVATAR.

The mixed genres clashed violently, too violently for many families and too stupid for clever teens. It was not JACK BAUHER hardcore enough for young men with only a few deaths (not the annoying kids sadly) and the politics was no west wing and it was not Califonia sexy though the plain girl stripped off) or Castle witty though it clearly tried for a slice of every pie to get those ratings and big bucks back though probably it will alienate and lose the very audience it's trying to win through such transparent tactics.

So what is TERRA NOVA? Possibly 'falling skies - lite' which is no good thing as I was disappointed with FS though I am trying so hard to stick with it. At least TERRA NOVA has yet to bring in religion though ironically they managed to drag back all of the reasons the future is messed up into the past plus the stereotypes.

A good pilot (like LOST) would make me wow, laugh out loud, shed a tear, turn on the light etc. But there were never any really impacting moments though I did enjoy allot of what was on offer it was all so cliché and passé, unoriginal and underwhelming to have any lasting impact except for the current misdirection which as previously mentioned had me rialed up.

It's so obvious what is wrong with TERRA NOVA and to a less extent it can all be fixed but no one will give us Starship Trooper for TV which I think would be one way to make this show compulsive viewing. The show runners have balls but they have been locked away by a greedy corporation (a film in itself!) and all involved are desperate (due to the investment) and confused (due to the interference) at what they are trying to sell as clearly too many people have had their say to raise the budget and spread the burden.

By stretching themselves in every direction but not far enough Terra Nova is very middle of the road made for TV syfy movie nonsense hoping to appeal to all groups, races, ages etc but it won't, can't work (not on this budget)...it never works no matter how many dinos or aliens or ??? you throw into the primordial melting pot, people are just too savvy these days to fall for it long term. For all the rubbish on TV we are still fat from Dexter, Breaking bad, Lost, The Mentalist, BSG, House 24, Spartacus, The Wire, SOA, WW, BN which all deliver more bang even on reruns so why give time to a new show which fails to succeed in any one direction and as a whole is a mess.

Outside of Falling Skies if I had to compare it to anything or the route the inevitable cancellation will take it would be that of THE CAPE. I liked the cape and was sorry to see it go as one thing it excelled in was being ridiculous camp cheddar but it whiffs of the same extra ripe cheese created by juvenile execs champing at the bit of a film success train and jump on for the ride failing to understand the core mechanics and so we get processed cheese, totally missing the point of what makes a good show great.

Maybe someone will take charge and like SGU or V the second series will be far superior. Already the second part of the pilot was as such but those good shows I mentioned that was too late for them as they were canned so really it will come down to money (so sad that so much relies on such a sad thing) or how much they want to lose in the hope of making a hit. It never worked out for Flash Forward; can it work for Terra Nova?

Doom (2005)

Doom...all in the title
18 January 2011
It is worth mentioning that the director as of 2011 has only since directed Street Fighter the legend of Chung-Li which should tell you everything you need to know but just in case you are still interested...

Director Christophe Gans of Silent Hill fame managed to successfully adapt a well known horror franchise to the big screen, keeping many fans happy as well as attracting new ones to the series. As a result there is now Revelations for 2011 and another sequel in the mix...so everyone happy....but when I read an interview in which Gans slammed Doom and its' director as among other things lazy, I thought that he was speaking out of turn as the history of video game adaptations is littered with casualties of corporate greed and inept fan-service.

I had seen Doom on release and thought little of it which was unusual for me as I have a near photographic memory for film so I thought it was time to revisit this oddity. So in theory I was approaching the movie for the first time and presumed that such a simple premise (big guns, demons, hell-gates, more demons, chainsaws, gore and doors) should be a recipe for success or at least enjoyable popcorn fodder fun. I was surprised to find that the reason I had forgotten Doom was due to having clearly erased the horror (unintentional) of this travesty from my memory for good reason. Even uncut, extended, unrated the film is another Super Mario The Movie, with all the hallmarks of a beloved franchise but little to no resemblance upon closer inspection. On the surface just because it looks and sounds like Doom doesn't equal the familiar feel of the game many know and love. Near the films predictable finale a first person perspective view rescues the film from obscurity harking back to the good old days of chainsaw madness in dimly lit corridors but it is too little too late and unlikely to convert non-fans to the franchise. The film deviates heavily from the source material and fails epically to replicate the superior films it continually emulates (Alien,Aliens, Event Horizon, every sci-fi film ever made cliché heaven) unless another resident evil is what you are looking for as it almost convinced me I was watching another Paul WS Anderson cash-in.

Mr Gans was correct in his diagnosis that the patient is indeed sick and should be put out of its misery before it infects other victims but if you have had the misfortune to see the latest video game films which are now in all in wonderful 3d you will know that the insidious virus from the films weak plot has not only escaped the Red Planets useless quarantine but is currently spreading to a screen near you.

Watch in the background or re-watch Aliens..again.
