A great film for the kids
20 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Legend of the Guardians is the first animated feature from director Zack Snyder. Snyder being known for his modern action in such films as Watchmen, 300 and his first film, the remake of the Romero classic, Dawn of the Dead, has stepped into the world of animation to bring us the story of Soren (Jim Sturgess) and his search for the Guardians of Gahool in order to save the owl world from being taken over by a army of evil owls.

3D has never been my best friend, but I do believe that it has its place in Cinema. There is no denying that the 3D in most animation films looks ten times better than live action. They are able to perfectly get depth and know how to make the 3D look good. LOTG looks amazing, even in 3D (I am yet to see it i 2D). The animation is some of the best around because everything looks so stunning. The Owls movement whilst flying is exciting, matched with Snyder's ability to direct action very well, you could easily mistake it for some of the best aerial photography. The scenery sits in the background like a perfect picture, I could do nothing but gaze around as the scenes played out. Nothing had been just left to be, everything had detail and made it really work.

Voice acting is a hard thing to criticise, after all, everyone involved gave a fitting performance. Their voices seemed to match the look of the owl that they were voicing.

The story of the film flew by very quickly in order to maintain the attention off its target audience, but the story has been so well compressed, that it feels like you've watched a 3 hour movie full of great story and characters. It doesn't feel like there was anything left out, but it does feel like there is so much more to discover about this world and these characters, a sequel is a no brainer.

Snyder brings his trademark speed ramp to this film. When I first saw this in the trailer, I though to myself "He just can't NOT do that" but after seeing it in the finished film, I can honestly say that he makes it work. It blends seamlessly into the fast paced action sequences.

The tone of the film isn't as frightening as it may seem and is perfectly suitable for all ages, there is something to be said about the owl-knapping and brainwashing, but there is nothing scary about the film that would stop you from taking a five year old.

I can safely say that not only is LOTG one of the best, most enjoyable animated films to come out this year, it's certainly one of the best 3D ones too. This weekend, take a visit to your local multiplex, you know, for the kids.

A modern day western
17 October 2010
The trailers seem to be a bit deceiving for this film. What you may think you might be getting is a tight paced action thriller, what you actually get is a modern day Western.

George Clooney plays Jack / Edward, a hit-man and gun craftsman who must hide out in a small Italian town to do a job, but stay hidden from "The Sweedes". We no nothing about Jack except for that he's highly skilled in what he does best. Whilst hiding out in the town, he befriends a priest and falls in love with a hooker.

To begin with, this film is very quiet, a few music ques fill the time, and even less dialogue. The film really pushes Clooney to absolutely deliver as he is on screen 90% of the time, if not more. We are left to decide what emotions and thoughts that Jack is going through simply by the way that Clooney acts. It seems to be a real old school way of film making and it is really refreshing to see it applied to a modern day film. I won't lie, many people are going to find this film boring and slow paced, but people who enjoy a good Western will love this film.

Clooney turns probably one of his most riveting performances. he doesn't have much dialogue at all so it really is left down to his acting abilities to echo what the character is going through. The other actors in the film, largely unknown to international audiences, turn just as good performances. Thekla Reuten and Violante Placido do an excellent job of keeping up with Clooney, playing the two women that enter his life when he rides into town.

Anton Corbijn, A music video director who delivered the excellent Ian Curtis biography, CONTROL, in 2007, delivers another great film, although almost entirely a polar opposite one. His direction shows Europe in a way that is not normally portrayed in American film.

Although not perfect, the film was a nice break from the usual "Last Job" assassin films. More of an exploration of Jack's love of his craft and his naturalistic obsession with not being able to let his past go. THE American is well worth watching.

A Solid film worth 90 minutes of your time
10 September 2010
Going into Kandahar Break, I was not too sure what to expect, but coming out of the film, it's clear to say what the film is. It's a harsh look at the realities of a giant culture clash. Its a drama, centred around a love story, set in Afghanistan.

The characters are really solid in this film, Shaun Dooley who plays Richard Lee, a clearance engineer who returns to Afghanistan shortly after he death of his ex-wife in Africa, is really something special. He comes across as something of a excellent TV actor, with leading man qualities, its going to be nice to see him do some interesting roles in the future. Dean Andrews plays the other British citizen in the film, Steve Delamore, who almost steals each scene he is in.

The other actors, mainly played by local actors of Afghanistan are also very good, with much praise going to Hameed Sheikh who may not have the biggest part in the film, but has one of my personal favourite characters in the film.

The directing of the film was pretty good, it does at some times feel a bit like a TV movie, but a good TV movie. David Whitney has certainly come from a TV background, but is certainly heading in the right direction to be a good feature director. The camera is still when it needs to be still and hectic when it needs to be hectic.

Overall the full film is pretty pacey, clocking in at 94 minutes, the time flies by and at no point does the film drag. If you get the chance, and enjoy a good solid drama, Kandahar Break is a film you should be watching.

Something for the Summer....all that is required is a little imagination
19 June 2008
I don't understand why this film is getting such a bad rep...oh yes, hang on, i do, it's because you have to be able to relate to movies to get it. I don't think that people got the fact that this is a 'End of mankind' movie with a little twist...we see everything from a very human perspective. There's no explosions, meteorites or high paced action, just well built tension and such an amazingly well told story. MNS knows the perfect pace and the perfect way to tell a story. So many people are expecting some sort of 'Twist', that they forget how to empathise with the characters and try to imagine what they would do if this really happened. i hear a lot of ranting about the dialogue, but i really found no problem with it, sure its a little ON THE NOSE, but people don't really speak in quotable lines of dialogue, i can't think of one real quotable line that anyone in real life has ever said. Im not complaining about most dialogue, I'm just saying that people should be more open to something a little bit different, and you are not one to be complaining if you rated D-WARS as a 8 out of 10 movie(yeah, I'm talking about you). If you want something a little bit different this summer, go and see the Happening.
