Superman & Lois (2021)
Stop The Whining
I know it's a family drama, but maybe that's the problem. Superman is usually action with drama and sometimes a little comedy, but I forget about the cool action in this series because EVERYONE, like ALL THE CHARACTERS constantly evaluate each others actions and CONSTANTLY stalk about their feelings. I loved Smallville and I love rom coms too, but Clark's family and their friends in this series whine all the time it's exhausting. They also cry all the time and I noticed how each of the characters personal frustrations built up during every episode and then they yell at each other, confess their emotions and talk about it at the end of every episode. But what's the point if they do it all over again every episode!? STOP WHINING PLEASE!!! It's like they turned Superman and Lois into ongoing family therapy and I really just want the lead characters to do their jobs instead, such as fighting an evil plot against a villain. The villains in this series are instead secondary and not memorable at all and I don't feel they evolve around and manipulate Superman like they usually do in Superman comics and movies. Instead the focus of the series evolves around family issues and crappy teenage drama and I'm sorry, but I couldn't care less, because the storytelling and acting isn't convincing. I have sat through many semi-bad movies and series and still left entertained, but this Superman & Lois series is unnecessarily exhausting to watch, I loose interest in the show.
Persuasion (2022)
Not for Austen fans
While Netflix attempts to sell an Austen story to non Austen fans, they forget that people aren't that stupid. Yes, you can tell a story about a period drama true to its time period to a young audience WHILST making them relate to the characters. Netflix don't have to modernise Persuasion in a regency setting. Also Dakota Johnson is a poor choice for playing an educated upper class English woman. Breaking the fourth wall is a great idea, but Dakota Johnson's spits out the lines with her thick LA accent, which doesn't do Jane Austen and her novel any justice. This movie doesn't display the actual cultural values of the regency era, which is essential to an Austen Period drama. Instead the characters act like their actions have consequence and they forget to address their counterparts correctly and importantly they forget to courtesy through the whole movie. Don't forget to mention the bland costume design, which would have been improved in terms of symbolism and the character development of the female lead, if they thought about fabric colours and materials more. Actually... Netflix should have changed the setting to LA in present time and they would make it work, like Clueless and 10 Things I hate About you. Next time Netflix recreates an Austen masterpiece, pick the right director, actors, writers and crew, even if it takes the whole cast of The Crown.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Great idea, but the female lead....
The idea of displaying two widely different people, both from lower middle class and their whereabouts is a very transparent example of the American society, that many can relate to, weather they are conservative or liberal. Butttt.... though I share many liberal values with the female lead, she comes out as inexcusably annoying as her timing is terrible. She takes soooo long making decisions which has huge consequences for the male lead, who takes the fall. Not okay. She should have stood up for him. Yes they are supportive of one another in many situations which sparks their chemistry, but dahm, if her part was better written I would have more respect for her character. They should have written the last 20min. Differently.
