Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
Sexual pleasure from a woman's point of view
There have been movies about older women and younger men, yet an older woman seeking sexual pleasure is different. I think British actress Ms. Emma Thompson does an excellent job as character Nancy Stokes, yet her character is not sure about fulfilling her sexual desires. Actor Mr. Daryl McCormack as young man character Leo Grande helps Nancy fulfill her sexual desires and, maybe, ask what part should 'sex workers' have in human sexual needs?
For me, this type of movie is different from other types of movies about older women and younger men and what role does sexual pleasure and fulfillment play in human sexual relations.
I like the movie "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" and I think for older women actresses this type of role, still having human sexual desires, allows for more opportunities in the movie business.
Overboard (2018)
It was a fun movie 2018 compared to the 1987 version
I have the original 1987 "Overboard" on DVD and I enjoy watching it. The 2018 "Overboard" version is interesting and the filmmakers do change the "male" and "female" roles compared to the 1987 version. I think as a 69 year old man who has experienced marriage and divorce several times and I have two adult daughters, one adult stepdaughter and one adult son, I "feel" for the woman and mother of three daughters who has to work two jobs and studying to be a nurse to "make ends meet." How "things" have changed since the 1970s and 1980s.
In other words, I think the 2018 "Overboard" is a fun movie.
Hello, My Name Is Doris (2015)
I like this movie -"Hello, My Name Is Doris"
I think actress Ms. Sally Field gives a wonderful performance as her character Doris. I am a "baby boomer" like actress Ms. Sally Field and I find it interesting to me how I remember Ms. Fields when she was a teen-ager in the television series during the 1960s decade - "Gidget" and to see Ms. Fields now in her 60s like myself. The point I would like to make about this movie -"Hello, My Name Is Doris" is how the different "time periods" presents a different acceptance from the American audience about the older woman-younger man relationship. What do I mean; For example, in the year 1950 a wonderfully made movie titled "Sunset Boulevard" was released in the year 1950 and the American audience, I think, did not want to see a kissing scene between actress Gloria Swanson and actor Willian Holden; Ms. Swanson was 19 years older than Mr. Holden, yet when there was a kissing scene between Ms. Swanson and Mr. Holden the camera would "fade out" or the camera would pan away and the American audience would not visibly see the kissing scene. Now we come to the year 2016 and in the movie - "Hello, My Name Is Doris" the American audience does visibly see the kissing scene between actress Sally Field and actor Max Greenfield; It appears American audiences are accepting of the older woman-younger man relationship. In this case actress Ms. Sally Fields is almost 34 years older than actor Max Greenfield; I think how "Time" changes attitudes in the American culture about relationships between the older woman and younger man is interesting to me. Nevertheless I found the movie to be charming, exciting, and engaging.
Whiplash (2014)
Jazz Drumming Is Still Alive In The Year 2014?
In the year 1959 when I was 10 years old, my late Mother took me to see the movie "The Gene Krupa Story" with the late actor Sal Mineo playing the role of Gene Krupa. At that time in the year 1959 Jazz music and Jazz musicians were popular and Gene Krupa the jazz drummer was still alive. My late Father like a jazz style called "Cool Jazz" and so do I. I have the movie "The Gene Krupa Story" on DVD and I can see certain things in the movie I did not understand when I was 10 years old; It was the jazz drumming I was interested at that time in 1959. When I learn to play jazz drums, I was listening to a jazz drummer name Joe Morello who play jazz drums for the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet. Since then I have left jazz drumming and have become interested and involved in songwriting and music composing using the computer MIDI systems. After seeing the movie "Whiplash" is there a comparison to the two different movies from the year 1959 and 2014? I think there is - for example, the late jazz drummer Gene Krupa did not have the support of his father or mother or his siblings to help pursue his career as a musician and the character "Andrew" from the movie "Whiplash" did not have the support of his father to help pursue the music career of his son Andrew. I do not remember my music director being so forceful when I played the drums in the high school jazz band or the the college jazz band. Maybe the movie director took some liberty and dramatize some of the events? Today in 2014, I think, any band director would be fired for physically hitting any music band student. I like the movie and I am glad some filmmaker made a movie about jazz drumming.
Annabelle (2014)
Another Scary Doll Movie?
The Annabelle doll is cursed and ends up in the hands of the expectant mother. This movie reminds me of the "Child's Play" movie from the 1980s and an episode from the original "Twilight Zone" 1959-1964 which is called, I believe, "Living Doll" from 1963. At the beginning of the movie I could see the year was not 2014 by looking at the cars on the street, yet I was not sure what year it was suppose to be. When I saw the newspaper and the year was 1970, I remember that year because I was 21 years old, yet I do not remember dialing "911" to call the police or an ambulance; I do remember dialing "0" to call the operator to get the police or an ambulance. Nevertheless, the movie did have some "scares" and I would recommend anyone who wants to be scared or to use a figure of speech - "get on the roller coaster ride" for a while if you like that sort of thing to go see that movie.
Bald (2009)
A movie for teen-age boys and young men in their 20s
I am neither a teen-age boy or a young man in my 20s; I am 61 years old and I do like certain kinds of low budget films. Some Movies by Roger Corman I do like and I have seen certain low budget films during the 1960s when I was a teen-ager and certain exploitation films in the 1970s when I was in my 20s. I think the producers should have titled this movie More Women and More Women or I'm a young guy and I need women or maybe I Can't stop thinking about women. The movies I saw as a teen-ager in the 1960s or as a young man in the 1970s were about having sexual relations with a woman, yet I thought some of those films were funny. Maybe being a 61 year old man I have lost what it is like to be a young man and always thinking about women. I do like women and I like having sexual fun with women, yet maybe what I think is funny is different from what a young 20something man thinks is funny in 2009? The basic story line is about a young man who is losing his hair and believes everyone at the college he attends is laughing at his hair loss. The main character in the story receives help from his marijuana smoking friend; they create a porn internet web site and recruit young women to do sexual activities on they porn web page. The parents of the daughters find out about it and decide to go after the young marijuana smoker. The marijuana smoker influences the parents with his marijuana smoke and gives a speech to the parents about why they(the parents)should be glad that their daughters made money and are millionaires. Actress Sally Kirkland(who is 60something)plays the mother who gives young actor Jonathan Cherry(marijuana smoker in the movie)a tongue kissing and you do see them touching tongues; would that scene be considered porn? The movie does have some funny scenes and I think teen-age boys and young 20something men would find "Bald" funny. I wonder what actress Sally Kirkland thought when she saw on the script that she would have to really be tongue kissing actor Jonathan Cherry?
Daughter of Dr. Jekyll (1957)
I enjoyed watching "Daughter Of Dr. Jekyll"
I saw this movie when it was originally released in 1957. I was eight years old and I think I was a little frighten when I saw "Daughter Of Dr. Jekyll" on the big screen. I rented the video recently and now I am fifty-eight years old in 2007 and I found the movie to still give me a little bit of chills. I think I understand other reviewers did not like the movie, yet it was a low budget film and I think the performers did it good job. Actress Gloria Talbott did it good job in her role as the daughter of Dr. Jekyll; actor John Agar may have not liked playing his role in the film, but he did not do a bad job. Actress Gloria Talbott plays Janet Smith who discovers she has inherited her late father's estate. She discovers her late father was the infamous Dr. Henry Jekyll;I like the dream sequence where she looks like a vampire on a rampage in the village woods. There is a comical sequence when Dr. Lomas transforms into a werewolf and runs through the village woods and peers in a neighbor's open window and sees a woman in her undergarments putting on her nylon stockings. finally, the hero and heroine help the villagers stop the murderous Dr. Lomas and put a stake in his heart to stop his full moon werewolfism.
Lycanthropus (1961)
"Werewolf In A Girl's Dormitory" is a rather good movie
I think I saw "Werewolf In A Girl's Dormitory" in the summer of 1962 when I was thirteen years old on the big screen in the United States. I remember the werewolf chasing the gal in the forest sequence. Now that I have seen it recently on DVD; the more I see it on DVD the more I like it. It is a rather good movie; I like the acting and the music is interesting. I wonder what was the original theme music; I think I read that the United States distributors changed the original European music theme to an American rock and roll music theme; what do American producers know? I say the original music theme is generally better. I recommend renting "Werewolf In A Girl's Dormitory" at your neighbourhood video store or buying it at retail video store. Maybe Best Buy might have it in their video section. For people who like werewolf movies, you could add "Werewolf In A Girl's Dormitory" to your video library. Will the real werewolf please stand up.
Dracula's Widow (1988)
I like the vampire woman in "Dracula's Widow"
I rented the video "Dracula's Widow" in October, 1989 and I enjoyed watching that video. I am not really sure why I like that move; it may be because I like the cinematography, the atmospheric music, the fact that the vampire woman Vanessa portrayed by actress Sylvia Kristel is not a lesbian and yet a strong heterosexual woman.. Vanessa's victims are males and her male companion is the character Raymond portrayed by actor Lenny von Dohlen. I have read other reviewer's comments and most are critical of the video "Dracula's Widow." Yet, I enjoy watching "Dracula's Widow." I think seeing a strong woman on film may intimidate some male viewers. The story line, the cinematography, atmospheric music, a strong woman vampire, a helpless victim being a male, and a girlfriend fighting to get her boyfriend back help makes the video "Dracula's Widow" exciting for me to watch.
Tamara (2005)
Great Horror Film
I have been watching horror films since 1956 when I was seven years old. When I saw "I Was A Teen-Age Werewolf" in 1957 with the late Michael Landon, I had a nightmare; When I saw "The Exorcist" in 1973, I felt frighten. I rented the DVD "Tamara" on July 6th 2006 and I thought I was going to see the usual low budget teen-age horror video; I was surprise I felt squeamish after watching "Tamara." It has been a long time since I have watched a good horror film with a frightening lead female horror character. The lead character in this scary romp is Tamara. Tamara is your nerd type teen-age female high schooler who has affection for her English teacher; Tamara is, also, a witch. We enter into Tamara's terrifying world when she makes the transformation. I suggest renting the DVD "Tamara" for horror fans.
The Fan (1981)
A Good Thriller
I think to see the actress Lauren Bacall in a sense playing herself as a well known actress in this 1981 thriller was exciting to watch. Ms. Bacall was 57 years old then. I was not comfortable watching actor Michael Biehn portray a psychotic killer. I rented the video in the year 2006 and I was unaware actor Michael Biehn had made this movie "The Fan." I had seen "The Terminator" on video in 1987 and I was use to thinking of actor Michael Biehn as a hero and not a villain. I saw the movie "Aliens" on video in 1992 and, again, I was use to thinking of actor Michael Biehn portraying a hero character. I think actor Michael Biehn did a good job portraying a psychotic killer. Maybe it helped actor Michael Biehn "acting range." It must be a difficult experience for a popular man or woman in the "public eye" to have an ordinary life. The public knows who you are because of the attention he or she receives in the media; therefore, an obsessed fan may "cross the line." I think the music score and the performances by the character actors and actresses were good.
Gladiator Days: Anatomy of a Prison Murder (2002)
Brutal Prison Murder
The documentary produced by HBO in the year 2002 shows two white inmates brutally stab a black inmate in the State of Utah prison system. I found the stabbing sequence disturbing. When the prison murderer(Troy Kell) is interviewed by the film producers, the prison murderer(Troy Kell) does not look like the stereotype Hollywood movie murderer. Prison inmate Troy Kell looks like a clean cut American young man. He is intelligent and articulate. At the time of the production of "Gladiator Days: Anatomy Of A Prison Murder," inmate Troy Kell was 33 years old; He began his prison life at age 18. It appears inmate Troy Kell's wrong decision to horribly shoot a man in the face began his life of crime at a young age. I think the documentary should be watched by concerned Americans who want to know what is happening in our American prison systems; American inmates should be protected against violent behaviour.
